For f sake why they prioritize thickness over battery capacity? It's a norm that nowadays mainstream users need at least 3000mah. What a stupid decision from Moto.

The Moto Z2 Play is the entry level access to the Moto Mods. For extreme battery life and waterproofing the Moto X will cover that. If people don't want mods then that is their option. The additional mods, many with included batteries, will be fine for those who choose to go that route. Anyone can buy the original Z Play if that is what they want. I am sure they have something special inside for the Z2 Play to make people want to buy it over the Z Play so let's wait and see.

Just think that this whole moto design across all models is horrible this time round. I wanted to get a moto g5 plus but the huge camera circle is hideous. I can just about accept the camera hump as its smaller in reality when you hold it but why have such a big camera circle....the camera itself is small but the circle is triple the size. On the higher spec models the camera hump is massively pronounced. I just don't get why motorola went with this design....for me its years behind the rest.

Moto Z line, supposedly the flagship one, goes against everything that Lenovo stands for - it's impractical, not well thought out, simply useless. Who in their right mind would buy an expensive phone with a small battery just to buy another add-on with the rest of the needed capacity? This ridiculous concept didn't work out well in 2016, why should it now? Let's hope the X line would bring the necessary features without any fancy gimmicks.

Wow, amazing. Motonovo sure knows how to destroy a brand. Z Play is their best selling phone from last year and battery is the key spec of it. Now they decided to go with less capacity battery. They must be feeling like we have tried our best to diminish the reputation of Moto but they have some left! Unforgivable. Let's not make any mistake this time!!!

Well, I was holding out on buying the Z Play, instead waiting for a worthy successor. Talk about shooting themselves in the foot. Ouch! Guess I'll buy one now, before the prices on eBay will skyrocket thanks to increased demand triggered by this shoddy attempt of a sequel. I expect the third generation to be 3,99 mm thick if they continue like this. The nobeds at Lenovo were onto something with the Z Play. Now the thinness craze got to them. Processor efficiency can only do a limited amount of power saving, especially if there is a distinct lack of battery power. Next Z Play will barely have more juice than the previous Moto Z. What sort of juice will the next Moto Z pack? 2200 mAh? Can't hide behind MotoMods forever and use them as excuse for crippling your phone's. Next thing I know, the second Z Play doesn't come with a headphone jack, but fret not! Here's the Headphone jack MotoMod! Honest to God, if they pull something like micro-transactions for hardware features in the third generation, shit is gonna hit the fan something fierce.

AnonD-632062, 21 May 2017I understand Moto needs to make the Z-series thin so as to ... moreI think thats because with motomods the phones look extremely big compared to competitors like oneplus, so they are trying to thin it out, but its stil a bad idea if it causes lower specs than last year moto z, anyway it would be good if it was cheaper

Anonymous, 21 May 2017I think they should take it a way further.
That is to sa... moreYes, that would be a great ideea. But the only problem is just the implementation of it by le/moto.
When they first introduced the Moto Mods, that was what I was also thinking they will do since they have the magic-conector pins on the back. The phone would see the external battery as a "device"battery and use that one first. And the interal battery only when needed, and for keeping the device alive when you swap external batteries. But that`s not how it works. The external battery works as a power bank that charges your internal battery. So in that way if it is a small internal battery it gets more wear-and-tear because it gets more charge-discharge cycles that make the battery not be able to keep it`s charge in time.
If they would implement the first ideea on the phone it would make it kind of a "user replaceble battery" and a customizable phone as you could have diferent designs on those external batteries.
Plus, the slimming of the phone is not a valid reason for losing the headphone jack. One true slim phone was the Allview X2 Soul Mini, that had a 5.2mm thikness and still had a headphone jack.
I am a Motorola fan, i`m still using the original moto x and it`s a good phone, but i liked the moto z play for it`s battery back-up and the lenovo p2. In my oppinion, a phone with a bad battery back-up is just a brik no matter how manny features is has.

I understand Moto needs to make the Z-series thin so as to remain of manageable size even with Moto-Mods on. But still last years, Moto Z Play was thin at 7 mm, yet packed a large battery and had an excellent battery endurance rating.
Downsizing the battery for a thinner smartphone is bad & I hope that doesn't give them an excuse to ditch the 3.5 mm headphone jack in the Z Play series.
