Just stay on your cave forever, slowpokes! The OS and apps will catch up to use more and more powerfull cpu. Just imagine if u can run SPSS on your phone in the future. Wait, symbian will suit you forever right? Lame...

That mean 2Ghz processor but not same as 2Ghz processor in laptop...Same like camera quality 16mp in smartphone not the same as 16mp camera quality in DSLR...I think if the processor is really 2Ghz then the phone need fan..lol..

That's Exactly as if putting a 3 Litre engine in a small Compact car ! Too much Power without the need for it.
And thats why i respect my N8 with its balanced Spec. and Equilibrium.
Why to Put a dual core Power hungry processor when a -Normal- cpu with a strong Gpu broadcom do the job and saves battery
... Thats another reason why i charge my N8 every 2 days and my friend charge his galaxy s every 12hours !!

As a bystander and a pro-competition person, I welcome this news. But as a normal tech user/observer, I feel that the gigahertz arms race for smartphone CPUs on SoCs are getting there too fast and almost an unnecessary calculated. Why?Batt tech and real world usage scenarios...Stagnant, no real R&D efforts there to improve or look for li-io/li-po alternatives AND I feel real innovations should come for "toughening up" (rugged use, more durable materials etc) the smartphone to further mobility's cause.
One can argue that batt tech stagnancy are being offset by better and better SoC power optimization designs.I'm not arguing against that.I just don't see the point for gaining multi core processing power for the kind of scenarios untenable for what could be a maximum of 4" screens' I/O efficiency?
The real danger of pushing the hardware envelope too fast in this aspect are; OS and apps' devs tendency to slack off from coding better.Google the Con Kolivas argument. It's been that way and still is on normal computing's front AND WILL NATURALLY spill over onto smartphones.

AnonD-3713, 19 Apr 2011Some years ago, smartphones CPU evolved because it was nece... moreAlways think that there is better way to improve things like functionality and overall user experience. It is always evolving and has never stopped. Android and iOS proved that at the expense of Symbian and now, Nokia was forced to adopt WP just to be able to keep up with those 2 OS. New innovations are there on the Android side. I am a Nokia fan and I troll Android news like the Atrix and SGS II but I am not blind to see that innovation is happening around me. It just happens that these new stuff is on Android phones and not on Nokia.
In other news, Apple sues the copycat Samsung for copying the iPhone's industrial design. I hope Samsung loses this one. Bwahaha!

Constantly increasing the speed of CPU's to deal with bad and inefficient programming is not the ideal way to go.
It seems in the last 8 years the market has become flooded with useless programmers using frameworks that when compiled process extremely inefficiently.

AnonD-3713, 19 Apr 2011I really hope you are right and we will see some software t... moreI really don't understand why you are so worked up with this announcement. It's just a dual core running at 2 GHz. Samsung is just announcing their road map on the CPU development sector. You should see what Nvidia have for us this fall. Tegra 3 with quad core is on its way. It will run up to 1.5 GHz on each cores. I hope you won't lose sleep because of that.

Some years ago, smartphones CPU evolved because it was necessary when they were receiving more and more functionality and to improve the overall user experience. Nowadays looks like the companies simply don't really know a way to innovate, for me these new dual-core phones looks nothing more than a desperate way to show something "new" because the lack of creativity for inovation.

Bill, 19 Apr 2011DKVC, why the negativity? Don't like it, dont use it. Simpl... moreI'm afraid it's just a way to impress fool people and a excuse to make poor optimized software. I really hope I'm wrong, but this 2Ghz Dual-core announcement only strengtens my point of view. It's only my opinion though, you don't need to agree with me.

DKVC, why the negativity? Don't like it, dont use it. Simple as, buy a mid range or lower end phone, why should the rest of us succumb to your caveman philistine thinking? Do a survey, find out what people want. Technology evolves, the world around us is getting younger and the trend is it's more than just cameras and SMS text messages. The bulk of people use thier phones as thier primary Internet/Email/Social Networking/Music Playing/Ebook and gaming tool arranged with apps, and ease of use and the way the OS runs to power all these functions in one go count. Don't believe me, all you have to do is go on a subway train or tube or bus and see what folks get up to on thier phones, the Internet serves a primary function on a handheld device rather than lugging an unnecessary hulk such as a Laptop. I could only imagine if you were in charge, we wouldn't have evolved beyond the Nokia 6310i at best.

AnonD-1082, 19 Apr 2011Technology is what drives the cellphone business. You fail ... moreI really hope you are right and we will see some software that really take advantage of dual-core phones. But until now, I don't see this as an evolution. You see, Samsung first dual-core phone isn't even on the market yet, there's no software that really take advantage of dual-core processing power and they are already talking about 2Ghz dual-core phones. It looks like only a way to make people impressed by high numbers when they don't even know what advantages they can get from that. I doubt that they are going to take full potential of such power, it looks like it going to be a excuse to make poor optimized software, just like PC games are nowadays, we are probably 4 years without graphical evolution but with more and more poor optimized games released to take advantage of such powerful and useless hardware avaiable, optimization is the key of everything. When we can see some really amazing new functionality or apps that take full advantage of that huge processing power, maybe we can talk again about technology driving forward.

Anonymous, 18 Apr 2011I don't think so! This is turning into the 'mega-pixal race... moreI think it is still too early to say that we dont need this technology.
Remember the days when Nokia 8210 or even Nokia 3310 was a hot item, these doesn't have anything that modern smartphones have save for calls, text and alarm clock. During that time, who would have thought that phones can have better functions? It only when powerful CPUs were added to phones that they started to act as a "high tech" mobile device rather than a cordless phone.
I believe that mobile technology is stil at its early stage and that in future, we will add more functionality to mobile devices, Much more than we might have thought possible..

AnonD-3713, 19 Apr 2011The only "competition" that Samsung is thereating... moreTechnology is what drives the cellphone business. You fail to churn out new tech then you fail on the market. That is what happened to Nokia when they missed the touchscreen trend. This is also the beauty of the Android platform where this CPU will most likely be used. The innovation is at breakneck speeds. The age of dual cores on cellphones is still on it's infancy and there is no doubt that softwares that takes advantage of multiple cores are coming. This announcement reminds me of the N95 when it was announced and people were praising it for its advance hardware which is superior to what the competition have and had haters saying that a GPU on a cellphone is not required.
