You can display a picture without any GPU...
A simple 2D display unit is enough if you got the proper decoding unit...

With the same Mali400mp2, you've got Rockchip Rk3229 which decode 4k h265 10bits 60fps...
And you've got MT6582 which decode only 1080 h264 30fps.

But the tiny T880mp4 was able to run some games faster than adreno 520 on S820 or T880mp12 on Exynos 8890 such as Real Racing 3 or Hitman.

On Helio X20, the same GPU doesn't perform that well due to 20nm process (but not badly at all)

On Kirin 960, GPU is more than 2.5 times better...

Krait is overrated and got some weaknesses.
JavaScript performances for exemple are far far behind A15 or A17.

Just like the old days of Krait.

Wow. This is pretty amazing news right now actually. Just wish it could be used in the Note 8 lol

Imagine all these improvements will also be made on the more advanced 10nm next year.
And these plus maybe further advancements on 7nm soon.

I had the notion that the 260 is just an underclocked 280 with less cache, that is it. Everything else is the same.

I love all these sweet spec bumps on cpu and gpu speed and architechture every year and the heavy bloat of OEMs just send everything crashing back down.

AnonD-248589, 30 May 2017You couldn't even watch video if your phone didn't have a gpu. It's not GPU that decode videos, it's VPU...

For exemple, old Allwinner A10 was able to decode h264 in fullhd without any problem with a crappy Mali 400mp1 (can't hardly do anything else), far better than Tegra 3!...
VPU on A10 was designed by Allwinner was called CedarX.
Arm has his own decoder (for exemple Mali V550)
Mtk use his own decoder (and decode vp9 since mt6595 - 4 générations...despite bigger GPU, Qualcomm decodes it only since Snap820! - 2 gen!)
Amlogic use his own decoder (Amcodec)
                          Rockchip use his own decoder
Now, on PC VPU are integrate on GPU, that leads to confusion...
Older graphic cards doesn't decode videos. There were separate cards (for exemple RealMagic from Sigma Design). You can build PC with 2D graphic card (no GPU) and video décoder.
One more think, DVD players decode videos without any GPU !

I guess what he would say when he write "GPU are useless"...most time, they are too powerfull compare to real games.
This lead to curious results...some games run better on Kirin 950 with "tiny" MaliT880mp4 than Exynos 8890 with huge mp12 (for exemple Real Racing 3 rendered in fullhd on both).

Benchmarks mainly tests fillrate and memory bandwidth. Results aren't what Real game are.

For exemple Mali450mp6 (Amlogic S812) gets better benchmark (opengl2.0) than T760mp2 (mt6752) or T720mp3 (Amlogic S912)...I haven't find a single game that run better on 450mp6!

The next goal with vulkan is the ability of soc to run CPU and GPU together and get sustained performances.
                          Pure GPU benchmarks are outdated

GPU size is overrated by customers...

In other words only CPU matters on modern SoCs (modems too are good enough for everyone at this point). And Kirin has the best CPU up until SD 835 was released.

That's why it made sense to buy Huawei you had the power 6 months before anybody else...

Lol, 30 May 2017You can use powerbankA powerbank doesn't give you instant 100%, a powerbank is an extra thing to charge (and often forget to). The power bank actually increases the wear and tear of the internal as it increases its cycles. With a powerbank you have an ugly cable tangling from your phone while charging it... It's a horrible solution made for the dark ages we currently live in.

Physics are a given, you cannot get much faster charging than we already do, you can't get much greater energy capacity within a battery than we already do. There is a reason why those evolve so slowly.

The solution is replaceable power of some kind. Replaceable batteries fit the bill for quite a while, but I suspect the future is closer to what Motorola does. A tiny internal battery and replaceable shells (batteries in fact) that both protect the phone but also act as the phone's battery.

That way when you replace your battery (with another "shell") you get zero downtime (and get the old one to charge instantly, thus never forgetting as they're part of the same "motion"). The first to do the above well, improve on Motorola's design would be a millionaire, billionaire even as it will solve the autonomy issue of the phones once and for all. The plan is virtually bulletproof. Phone would be ultra slim (as it will barely have an internal battery), and you could choose as big or small battery as you'd like...
