Google facing a lawsuit over Android location tracking

01 May, 2011
It appears that Google are to suffer the same troublesome press as Apple have of late, due to the discovery of an Android based tracking system, not too dissimilar to the one recently brought to light on the iPhone 4....

Bush's "Patriot Act" has been interpreted to allow most any company to aquire your tracking data and marketing data. The more that you people allow to become "standard practice" without standing up for your rights, the more you will loose. You are reacting just the way the companies want you to. The statement "I have nothing to hide" is a prime example of our clueless society. Think ahead at what is going to happen in the future if you don't stop it now. Our Government (Republican or Democrat) has no power to stop this now, it is too well entrenched. Thank God I am now old enough to only deal with this for a short time!

Yani, 03 May 2011"What exactly is the issue here? I don't have anything... moreNot the same issue at all.

Your example is "Oh no, someone is going to rape/murder me! This is vile, evil, creepy, and wrong!"

Google's example is "Oh no, Google will be able to use expert systems to cross check any significant statistical variance in my position! They might *gasp* have emergency services look into it!"

"What exactly is the issue here? I don't have anything to hide so personally it's not a problem at all!"
Very good example that all humanity is lost! I guess you use Facebook regulary :P
Hey buddy, give me your web address to your WebCam that shows your bedroom 24/7, hey you have nothing to hide, why not? :P
I'm not a creep or I will not sell footage on the web, honest! You know you can trust me! :P
I hope now everyone understants the problem!

        Haha, told you so!
        Read my comment here:

Summary: ALL smartphones track YOU! Why? Because they can and you agreed to it. Just watch South Park's latest episode :D
Well, to write my story. I decided whenever I should buy an iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy S, I choose a SGS because it was much cheaper (1 EUR) and iPhones can only be bought abroad in my country. I knew both companies (Apple/Google) would track me. Let's be honest here, Google knows you better than Apple, because it has a larger portfolio of online apps (GMail, GTalk, Search).
        And I knowingly choose Google, because I'm cheap --> privacy 0 : money 1 :D
I once started a Google's app named "Latitude" and a popup appeared asking if I would like to share my location with my friends and Google, I clicked NO! Guess some ppl thought this was a good idea or just didn't read the popup (Kyle from South Park :D) and are now the most vocal ones here.
To all of you Apple haters out there, just remove your RDF shields yourself and be afraid of Google, be very affraid! Well, I would be more affraid of Google than Apple.
And to end my post: To all of you that think that you are unimportant to be tracked. It's not the problem that you are unimportant, but privacy of all people is slowly being cut off slowly piece by piece. And why would you allow to be datamined by lets say private detectives for your boss, wife,...
You are giving away precious personal information for big companies for free and they are using this information without your knowledge and making big money out of this. And Google is a prime example of that!

What exactly is the issue here? I don't have anything to hide so personally it's not a problem at all! Every single mobile phone does location update (registering the current location with the network), the difference is just storing the information on the handset. I have an iPhone 4 and will happily upgrade to another iPhone or Andriod without a thought about location tracking.

actually TomTom really sold those trackinginfo already... I believe it was to the Swizz police, so they could see, where most people drive to fast and make the controls there.

then if this is true that they are tracking you and you feel you are not secure then i hope you delete your facebook account coz they are the one who stores all of your information .. whether message , pictures , comments etc..... goggle is the one powring it .. so this is not really a big deal ..

[deleted post]the point is companies acting behind scenes, and not being forward about it. There should be a choice not to collect anything at all, and there isn't, even if there's a choice not to send the data collected. U kinda getting paranoid if u feel safer by having data collected if u are on a trial for a murder u didnt commit, which is something really really unlikely. Now, having my life tracked and not wanting it is not being paranoid. Neither I want my child with a chip implant in the event they might get kidnapped. The basic right of an individual is his right to privacy. And more and more we live in a surveillance society. 344 per day cameras on average recording a person in london, public transport pass recording every movement, emails and phone conversations are saved in data bases, emails with words like "terrorism" etc being screened ... people are induced to believe they are safer with all this, but they are not. They are not doing it with altruist motives, they are doing it to gain power and control over us and manipulate us into things... like targeted advertising on phones etc.... If we allow apple and goggle to do this now, later, they will advance further and invade more and more. Interesting read is "1984" by George Orwell

The only way to make sure that your phone (any kind of phone even old Nokia phones) is untraceable is by removing the battery. We have noticed that during the uprising in the Arab nation.

Andy, 02 May 2011I dont think you read the "Terms and conditions" ... moreI don't think you understand fully the argument being put forward here - the EULA does indeed give Apple the autonomy to collect this data however in the case with Google, it asks you each time you connect - and if you click yes to it, then you consent to the collection of such data. Honestly, you read every EULA to the end? Really?

The people who sued them don't know how to use their phones, it clearly asks for permission to post their location information.
