One technique that could be used with brittle materials is to prestress them in compression.
They have low tensile but high compressive strength, so if prestressed, a tension force should act as a smaller compressive force.
Not sure if bridge building techniques will work in phones without making them stupidly heavy though...

AnonD-521587, 17 Jul 2017yeah man they definitely made an awesome design for the pho... moreCarbon fibre would or kevlar.
Lightweight, flexes for impact resistance, decent scratch resistance and is very strong.
Droid turbo 2 with weaker ballistic nylon back survived a 900ft drop with barely any damage:

A well built phone with a metal frame and kevlar back would be crazy strong.

Glass is the worst option.. it breaks & gets fingerprints all over. Looks terrible.

The Gorilla Glass 5 cover ... moreyeah man they definitely made an awesome design for the phone and great material choices the sides are definitely not just any cheap plastic that people are complaining about. and people hate on the big bezels but they have functional purpose.

wouldnt carbon fiber be a great material for smartphones? maybe titanium like andy rubins smartphone.

AnonD-521587, 17 Jul 2017Seems like you just described Sony phones more specifically... moreXZ Premium has the best designs! The Gorilla Glass 5 cover the front camera lens and also the back camera lens and whole front and back is a protection and still extremely gorgeous. The top and bottom bezel is aluminum and it edge is a kind of electroplating to maximum the strength for scratch resistant and it also a solid bumper for a phone, furthermore it is a heat dissipation for it internal U shape designs, please be remember inside of the phone still a whole piece graphite underneath the back cover. The middle frame of the phone is the TPU/Nylon for reduce the drop impact and protect the display from break and it is also as a signal penetration to get best connections from the dual side of frame and have a better grab feeling and it still gorgeous, look at the iphone, their signal strip is totally a ugly designs. The Jerryrig also show the XZ Premium's buttons are made from metal.

Anonymous, 15 Jul 2017*Facepalm" The results are totally dissapointing. So even a... moreI agree 100%. Unfortunately the vast majority of people are primitive. They they care about only the looks and status symbol instead of features and usefulness.

If people had common sense they would want plastic phones with thick, biggest possible camera sensor like the Nokia 808, removable, thick, high capacity battery like the LG V20 with ZeroLemon 10000mAh extended battery. This is what flagship phones should be.

Metal for the frame, corners, any stressed members.

                        Advanced polymers for the rest.

Whatever makes the phone both strong and light. I don't care what it looks like because I always put a silicone backing on it anyway to improve grip.

I belong to the smallest group - plastics, since they are most practical, and most convenient. My S7 is made from glass and metal (glass back, metal sides), but I still put it into a plastic case. If I could, I'd buy S7 Active and use it without a case, but I live far from USA.

Glass on the back looks and feels great till you touch it. Afterwards it has smudges all over it, so it doesn't look that good. And it's slippery. And if it falls on a hard surface, its busted.

this is exactly what I had in mind!
the only reason I am abandoning HTC and not getting the U11,is that I cannot have glass on the back of my phone since I drop it so often!
Huawei is the new choice! B)

Materials don't matter at all - for those people using protective cases. the front is made of glass, other sides - are covered by silicone or something else.
Cases offer the best grip and customization.
So, just make a phone that is intended to use with a protective case.

I think carbon fiber would be a good choice or maybe some sort of titanium alloy
