Imagine a greyscale photo that's being warped towards a pure black or white photo, but in colour. It's too contrasty, because the pixel sensors must be so small. My Vivo Xplay 3S of early 2014 blew it out of the water, and so have following Samsung flagships and apple from a year after that, not to mention now one plus, oppo, well basically anything decent!

They telegraphed the removal of the most important feature for months, so no surprise.
No problem, already ordered a moto g5 to replace my 3 year old phone; has what I need, i.e. a removable battery. I hate phablets anyway.

Even iphone's look better, same f1.8
S7 has higher E.V and warm colors. Green of plants are yellowish, same for gray of concret and asphalt.
S8 pics look better than S7's.
