The S4 was a much more efficient device, from the display to the software. 600 on the S4 was working out of its perf/watt curve, it would last much longer if it was clocked 200mhz lower. You can see that by the S4's longer stand-by battery life.
It was a calculated move by Samsung knowing they'll still get the battery life win, and performance win. Doesn't change the fact we could have had a more balanced Galaxy S4.

Simon, 02 Aug 2017Where did you see a less than 1% power difference? Samsung'... morein the ancient arc when 600 was flagship. I had the two phones. and did an endurance test. the HTC M7 died just 8 minutes after the S4. and I made sure they start from the same mAh amount. (which was. 2250 mAh, that's 86% battery for the S4 and 98% for the HTC ONE M7. and to make things even fairer. they ran the same version of ROM, and same Android version (4.3)

After pairing my S7 edge and Pixel the last two days for some courier work, I came to the conclusion that my LG G5 is still my favorite phone to type and post comments on. V20 is probably my 2nd fav. Both are really my ultimate media player and browser devices. The Pixel will occasionally lag from time to time while typing. It's odd because other than that, it is the smooth at everything else.

Samsung is only real advanced with mobile payments. It's low light capability is overrated but no more so than the Pixel's. What I like about the Note8 is the camera doesn't look to protrude and the curve is similar to the Note7 and S8 which isn't so pronounced. I believe this would be the best phone ever if it had a Google Play Edition while maintaining its MST.

Note8 vs iPhone 8 (or whatever they call it) vs Pixel 2 will be the phone battle of the year. I don't think the V30 will be all that because LG removed features that differentiated itself from the rest. The Nokia 8 or 9 will be the dark horse. My money is on the Pixels from now into eternity. Google OS for Google Phones. The rest just tries to ruin the Android experience for everybody.

            Nexus One
            Nexus S
            Galaxy Nexus
            Nexus 4
            Nexus 5
            Nexus 6
            Nexus 6P
            Nexus 5X
            Pixel/XL

Stay loyal to Google. The Note8 looks to be great but expect carrier molestation, overpricing, fingerprints galore, unrealistic colors from the photos and display, bad RAM management, Samsung bloat, and laggy af software. Don't be fooled by Samsung anymore. True Android loyalists stays loyal to Google.

AnonD-234645, 02 Aug 2017I am actually a technology enthusiast. and I perfectly unde... moreWhere did you see a less than 1% power difference? Samsung's 10nm process acts optimally at around 2-2.2ghz. Anything above that, and any performance gain comes with a significantly higher power drain. If you wish, you can easily reach 3ghz on the Samsung's process for ARM chips, but you wouldn't want to do that for a reason.

I had pleasure touring the Qualcomm office, you can Google the articles of another news site who nicely described Qualcomm showing off the 835, their labs etc. They are outright recommending tuning the governor for balance, yet nobody does that.. because of benchmarks and people screaming hate when a chip loses against another one, despite being much more efficient.

Read the comparison to the Exynos chip that Anand made. Read the efficiency part. Please, for the good of what we get from future smartphones, don't demand what will hurt us all in the end.

Anonymous, 02 Aug 2017The current rumor price it at $1200 at the states.. Now we ... morethe current top spec iphone 7 plus 256gb in the usa is $969 (Sim free) in the UK that model retails for £919 or in direct conversion about $1200, there is no way it will increase more then about $200/£150 on the next top spec model. just my opinion of course

AnonD-251634, 02 Aug 2017I really hate the direction all these new phones are going.... moreclearly you know nothing about technology. the phone is able distinguish between a phone being held or the edges being used. the same type of technology used in the ipad mini.

I really hate the direction all these new phones are going. This idiotic, skinny form factor with the curved screen is complete rubbish. One cannot hold it without touching the screen and the sides are not protected by a proper case against drops. The skinny form factor does not allow good landscape viewing especially when using the keyboard.

Another thing I cannot stand is these stupid tech journalists that are always obsessing with build quality. Every phone is obsolete in about 6 months. Aluminum frames and glass panels have no real value unless you're an I-Phone (Idiot-Phone) user. Plastic frames and plastic backs are not only make phones less expensive, but they are lighter and easier to hold. So when you drop one, there's less force hitting the floor and less damage.

This brings me to another point. These new phones are expensive as hell. They cost as much as a good laptop. Phones like the Note 4 are great. It was expensive but you could replace the battery yourself so the phone could work better longer. I travel a lot. For this reason, I am carrying a LG V20 and an LG Stylo 3. I love to sit at the airport with a phone topped off to 100% via a new battery and watch all the I-Phone and now Samsung Phone idiots fighting for a charging plug. THE FACT IS THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR A REPLACEABLE BATTERY; NOT WIRELESS CHARGING, FAST CHARGING, NOT WATERPROOFING!!!

In addition to the missing removable battery, on the last Notes Samsung has eliminated the FM radio and video out via the USB port. These are very important. I hope that the Note 8 can charge and be connected to a large screen through the USB C port. The Note 7 could output to a larger screen. We'll see what the note does. I connect my LG v20 to a large monitor and to my bluetooth keyboard and can use it like a laptop with almost no lag when typing. Wireless casting works well sometimes, but sometimes the lag makes typing horrible.

The only reason I would even think of buying the Note 8 is the camera. But the camera, no matter how good is not good enough to make up for the other deficiencies.

Right now I'm carrying a LG Stylo 3 which I paid about $250 for including taxes. It does everything I need but the Camera is horrible. I just wish someone would make a $500 phone with the following features:

                    Plastic Frame with removable back
                    Replaceable Battery
Best Camera with high frame rate video recording for slow motion video
USB C or HDMI Out for Video
Screen resolution that changes when hooking up to large screens.
Fast processor with 4 to 8 GB RAM
                    FM Radio
                    Stylus
