Merwyn Fernandes, 14 Aug 2017Do you think with the rising trend for 18:9 display there w... moreYou didn't read my comment properly.
The vast majority of Apps, Games, and Videos target 16:9.
Regular Apps will make the trend the earliest, but it will be a slow transition as developers in the Android ecosystem aren't obliged to follow Standards or Best Practice like they do on iOS. Case in point; Material Design, its been out for ages and there's still some Apps being built that don't use it, or use it properly. And there are many Apps that still haven't been updated to the Material Design aesthetics.
Games are the same, but could be worse. Some games are designed with that aspect ratio, which can break the immersion if not coded properly. For instance a horror-themed game, where it relies on "jump scares", however, if the user with these displays can see the emerging scare it loses its effect. PC Gamers have the same issue when playing RPG games and using UltraWide Displays. So not only will some games never be updated to run properly on these 19.5:9 displays, but lots will be made that skip it, and some games will scale up to it but it will break immersion. Not a deal breaker, but a far cry from a high-end experience.
And now lets get into videos. The majority of videos are shot in 16:9, this goes from TV, to cartoons, to home videos, to movies. And the majority (scratch that ALL) will not scale to a 19.5:8 aspect ratio. And to make matters worse, even the phones with these aspect ratios (ahem SGS8) do NOT shoot videos at this aspect ratio. So you will always see a crop of the recorded footage, or you will see it zoomed out with letter boxing. The worst part is, this isn't going to change.
Thus, not only will you actually get a mixed experience, but the USABLE screen will actually be smaller. You're essentially duped. For instance, the LG G6's dimensions are slightly larger than the Nexus 5X, however in terms of USABLE screen the Nexus 5X wins with its 5.20" size compared to the LG G6's size of 5.19 inches. However, the 5X defeats the LG G6 again because it has an LED indicator and Front-facing loudspeaker for better media consumption.
So now you might be wondering, why even bother with 20:9 - 18:9 ratios.
And you'd be right !
This is NOT an improvement. Say it with me, it is NOT an improvement. It is a distraction. A gimmick, if you will. I've been lobbying OEMs to shave bezels for years. Did they? NO!
The bezels are still there, they simply covered it with a thin display over it.
What we need is a FLAT 16:9 display with a Screen-to-Body ratio of 75%-80%... similar to the LG G6, without a curved sides or curved corners like the Galaxy S7/S8. That's ACTUAL progress, actually keeping the display size AND reducing the device dimensions. Because you would potentially have a device that's as big as a 4.6" iPhone 7, but with a much larger 5.2 inch screen, AND it won't be as fragile as the SGS8.
So you can keep your weird aspect ratios to yourself, with slightly larger phones with slightly smaller displays. The rest of us RATIONAL people want the ACTUAL bezels to be shrunken and not deceived by gimmicks.

I'm glad the LG V30 will finally be using an OLED display. I've been seeing LG TV's with phenomenal panels and i always wondered why they didn't go ahead and use something similar on their phones. Personally that's the main reason i chose the OnePlus 5 over the LG G6. Sure it's not a 2K panel but i can't get away from the infinite black levels.. The LG V30 will be a phone to look out for.
One thing i can say for sure though, if they get rid of the headphone jack i will turn my head away and throw my money an another company. Bluetooth in my opinion still isn't able to completely replace a proper headphone jack. Even bluetooth 5.0 has it's little issues, no consistent enough.

I just received the Nougat update on my T-Mobile LG V10. It's running better than ever now! Battery life seems to have improved. About 30 more mins of screen on time.

821 is less than a year old, but luckily you are wise enough to replace a phone when it reaches 6 months (money are pouring out of your pocket like water out of fountain); nowadays people are craving of becoming critics than to uphold something...

Yes, Lg, make sure that you continue to engage in your stupid geographical crippling, so that I can much more easily cross an otherwise nice and nice looking phone off of my list of interest.
That is your goal, right, Lg?
I mean, you wouldn't want to do anything foolish, like sell phones.

Let's iterate the new "features".
1) an annoying blob that host a few frequently used apps.
- which is the actual purpose of the home screen in itself (with its associated folders and widgets).
2) An allways on screen that completes defeats the purpose of having an AMOled screen.
- IMHO Nokia's "sleeping screen" is the very best implementation of AOD which shows all sort of things while keeping the advantages of an AMOled screen.
3) The new lemmings features that all manufacturers need to have but that users probably wont use, face recognition.
4) "...various included vibration combinations that can be matched to the phone’s ringtone..." a feature that my Sony-Ericsson K750i had 10 years ago.
- in fact I remember that there was a great (and easy to use) theme-editor where you could create vibration-patterns yourself to match your MP3-ringtone.
So these are the weapons that LG is gonna use to win consumers hearts. Crappy implementations of things that we had in the past?
Oh God, what do I crave for a good ol'Symbian or even Windows Mobile (NOT Windows Phone) smartphone.

Look at those homescreen snapshots. I like LG's phones, but I'd like them a bit more if they weren't just trying to copy Samsung.
