Weekly poll: now that the Nokia 8 is official, is Nokia back?

20 August 2017
The fabled brand took a long, winding path to where it needed to be - making high-end Androids. But did HMD do enough?

No, they aren't back. At least not with Nokia 8. It doesn't have any wow factor other than a certain Nokia and Carl Zeiss brand names. They could have just targeted OP3T/5's price point at the beginning. High end is so saturated that a phone needs one or two standout features to attract people. Which, Nokia 8 lacks presently. And also not many will buy the present Nokia blindly as they once did with the old Nokia.

Do not trust nokia they come and go. With Windows blunder, they left users leading to no where space, where Microsoft based devices are not supported nor upgraded.

Nokia is back, when they can make a phone that we can turn and bend and twist
      like the good old N-series

No, they're not back, at least not yet. It's a good start, but it's just the start. They have to do way better than that, in terms of design at least.

And since when was any of Google's phones selling good? If we'd add all Google devices from the initial Nexus, something like 8-9 years ago, they'd probably be up close to a couple million. :)

This is the first time I felt unable to respond to a GSM Arena survey.
There was no option for those who were unsure (if Nokia is major player or not again). Personally, it's too soon to tell i think. If they want to succeed in the US , they'll need carrier support, as in they should try like hell to get company stores to sell their handsets once again.

I totally agree with your comment, specs wise is nice and all but there's "nothing special" about it. Camera is okay, Design in meh, no proper waterproofing and that's about it.
If they can market it better, probably it'l sell in some countries but with that price, they're competing with the likes of the existing flagships that have "something special", like the S8 and the XZ Premium's 4K display.

They need to have something different to get noticed.

What broke Nokia's neck is that they put that horrible Windows garbage on their phones. Back then, they were too arrogant and thought themselves invincible. So when MS came and offered them a huge wad of money for putting their poop OS on their phones, they were too greedy and took it, thinking that not even such a poop OS could hurt them. They couldn't have been more wrong.

Windows on the desktop is already awful (especially Windows 8, truly nightmarish), but the Windows mobile OS has to be the most horrible OS ever conceived, it's such a massive pain in the a$$ to use and all. Even at its best time, and despite millions and millions spent on advertising, Winpoop mobile never got more than 3% market share, and soon declined to 2%, where it hoovered for a bit, before it finally collapsed.

Market share numbers from IDC for 2016 Q4:
                  Android: 81.4%
                  iOS: 18.2%
                  Windows mobile: 0.2%

As the Nokia name became associated with that Winpoop OS, it became utterly soiled and reeks now. So I seriously doubt it was a good idea to buy up the Nokia name after it went kaputt.

This is especially true if they only deliver a rather mediocre performance, as here with the Nokia 8.
Despite the Zeiss name, the camera is just an eyewash and only offers mediocre quality.
The phone itself is far too tiny to be taken seriously, which can also be said of the tiny battery.
There's nothing special about the phone, and the price of 600€ is vastly overpriced. The Samsuck S8 can already be had for about 550€ after the recent price cut, and despite its many flaws (e.g. fragile and useless eggshell edge, horribly placed fingerprint reader), it's still a better phone overall and at least has a decent 5.7" size.
As mediocre as the Nokia 8 is, it should be priced at 400€ at best, to at least have a decent chance.

i think nokia should do something radical than follow what other brand are doing(like waterproof bezel ), something like 41mp camera, side stereo speaker like 5800(best sound on smartphone ever), that's what nokia known for in the past

nokia 8 just like any Android smartphone from likes of huawei, meizu,or any other brand, nothing special

ALso not 100 percent all the patents have transfered through from nokia. I feel like next year will be better for nokia still not quite the wow factor. We'll see what the PIxel 2 brings. I heard it will have bezeless design and dual front facing speakers which would really hurt sony because Google would bring what sony is lacking.

Seems like sony wont be doing much else different with the Xz1
