They spoil their own reputation. I bought a Lenovo Vibe x3 (with amazing audio chip and 20MP camera; except OIS) which was their flagship for ~20k INR. Got updated to Android N quickly after launch. But that was it they didn't even provide security patches / bug fixes to OS or worse update to Volte which the hardware supported only to be ignored by the software drivers.
Many users of VibeX3 have already written off purchasing lenovo phones again and now the same will apply to Moto G4 users. Best way to lose a customer base.
Now companies are forcing users to depend on Samsung. Hope HMD & LG give us a way out.

It's not a matter of drivers, it's a matter of OEMs promising when they absolutely know they cannot deliver. Worst thing is, probably they have a way to avoid legal issues with this. I know of a few people who were convinced to buy this phone because of the Oreo promised update. Such a shame Motorola has become this.

On another note, there are a few phones launched this year with SD625. Think VERY carefully before buying one, if Qualcomm is dropping driver support so early in the lifecycle for lower end chipsets, and Project Treble is only required on phones launched with Oreo. Ya... Things may get pretty salty if one gets one of those.

Anonymous, 18 Sep 2017I wonder if this is because Motorola doesn't want to releas... morePossibly, because I don't see any SD 617 phones being officially updated to Nougat anywhere. Qualcomm themselves said that SD 800/801, their previous flagship chipsets, won't officially support Nougat (they don't have the required drivers) so I don't see a midranger like SD 617 getting much love either.
But then again, we are talking about Lenovo here and like most Chinese OEMs, they don't have the best track record when it comes to keeping promises.

I'm more upset that they make no mention of the E4 either, which is only a few months old.

Cheap or not, if you said you will do an update and not just said but marketed about it basically everywhere, you should keep and fulfill that promise no matter what. Failed to do so will hurt your company credibility really really hard, especially cheap phone since a lot of people bought it rather than the high end one. If you can't keep your promise, never promise. This also can lead to legal issues since it's basically a false marketing
