KGI: iPhone 8 sales are not weak, people are just waiting for the iPhone X

27 September 2017
Analysts expect the X to match the two iPhone 8 models in terms of units sold.

I am planning to upgrade my 5s to either 8 or X; waiting to try out the X before I decide. Additional cost amortized over 2-3 years is minimal; the question is whether face recognition and other X features are game-changing and necessary or just fluff. Maybe there are others like me?

If iPhone 7 sold 60 mil, but iPhone 8 and iPhone X sold 40 mil each, are sales weak? total is still 20 mil more.

So too early to say, time will tell.

AnonD-523946, 27 Sep 2017It doesn't Sony phones start reloading apps from one point ... moreSorry, I attached this reply to the wrong post. I meant to attach it to one of those folks talking about how iPhone 8 was bested by other phones during those "real-world speed tests" on YouTube (and I can't delete it).

      ----

I've seen enough benchmarks and video editing clips to know the multiprocessing capabilities of the A11 Bionic SoC are pretty stellar, so I was puzzled by why those "real world speed tests" were showing such different results.

The A11 Bionic contains a new processor controller, and I believe what we're seeing is an artifact of how it dispatches engines (cores). The A11 has two Monsoon heavy lifting engines, and four Mistrial high efficiency engines. It can dispatch all of the engines, unlike the A10 processor controller.

The A10 Fusion SoC (iPhone 7) had two banks of engines - one bank had two heavy-lifting engines and the other had two high efficiency engines. The Fusion processor controller could just throw one bank or the other at a process.

I believe that what the A11 Bionic processor controller is doing (in the interest of saving energy) is dispatching a new process on a high efficiency engine. It then monitors that engine, and if it exceeds a certain threshold it will add another engine. It then monitors those engines to see if those resources are sufficient.

In this way, a process only gets as many engines as it needs, and the processor controller has engines in reserve in case another process is initiated, or another process has a real-time blocking event complete (like waiting for an I/O to complete).

The long and the short is, those simplistic "real world speed tests" comprised of eight serially launched apps (then round-robining them) will no longer be a valid test the speed of the multiprocessing complex - and let's face it, those tests were never a reflection of any real-world workloads.

So much for instant gratification on launch day :-).

Now me ... I'm lusting after a 2017 iMac 5K (I have the 2014 which looks identical except for the ports).

But when looking at the 2017 reviews, the tech writers were whining about the bezel sizes :-).

Anonymous, 27 Sep 2017Not an Apple hater. But have you watched speed test video b... moreI've seen benchmarks and speed tests using video editing (computationally intensive) which belay that fact.

I think what you're seeing with those "real world tests" which serially launch eight apps and then round-robin the process is an artifact of the new processor controller.

The new processor controller in the A11 Bionic SoC has the ability to dispatch the six cores (two Monsoon heavy-lifting cores and four Mistrial high-efficiency cores).

The old processor controller could only direct cores to a process one bank at a time - two high efficiency or two heavy-lifting.

My assumption is that now that they have six cores which can all run at once and an objective of energy savings, the new processor controller will give a high-efficiency engine (core) to a process when it initiates. It then monitors the process, and if it exceeds a certain threshold it will assign another engine. After that it monitors both engines to see if another is warranted.

This way, you never have more engines working on a task than it needs, and there are engines in reserve in case another task is spawned.

If my assumption is correct, those rather simplistic "real world tests" where applications are serially launched then quit will no longer correctly meter the potential of the multiprocessing complex - and let's face it, those tests don't really reflect any kind of real-world normal workload.

So much for instant gratification on launch day :-).

AnonD-645900, 28 Sep 2017You need to read this article first which already says IPho... moreWell, preorders for the iPhone X start October 27th.

I intend to get a preorder in and will want to see a demo unit in the Apple Store. Then if I don't like the X, I'll cancel and get a 8 Plus.

Unfortunately, that's also when I expect demand for the iPhone 8 models to pick up - when other customers decide that $1000-1150 isn't worth it (add in another $200 for AppleCare+) or they find out they can't get product until January.

I notice there are a lot of Android owners here, probably some with newer phones.

About current OLED panels: Have they fixed the blue pixel premature death problem? Also, when viewing fast action video, how bad is the pixel cool-down problem? Is it really that noticeable when viewing fast action sequences?

            Curious minds want to know.

(All of my Android acquaintances have older phones with the exception of one who has the Pixel.)

AnonD-1825, 27 Sep 2017Maybe you forgot that 8 plus is lot like iPhone X from insideNo it's not. Not inside or outside. They share some hardware but a lot of things are different. The biggest is the screen and the lack of home button.

How can everyone say that iphoneX is the best without ever using it? iPhone always had the home button since 2007 and now the X doesn't have it. No one's tried it without home button, how do you know it'll be awesome without trying something no one's used to before?

Again, once you've used it, then we can talk about it. I have no doubts that Apple has made a great smartphone yet again, but that remains to be proven by the general public.

Guys weak sales are weak sales. No excuses. Iphones 8 and 8 plus were launched to sell independent of X performance and if they are failing to sell we can't describe that failure as anything but failure. The lower specced Iphones don't compete with their more expensive brother. They are not performing. Period no excuses

If they're selling half of what the previous one did, they are weak. Expecting the iPhone X to sell well doesn't make the numbers of the 8 any less weak. If Apple was expecting weak numbers, that's another story entirely.

iPhone 8 is selling VERY well, most of the people on the fence are owners of iPhone 7, not much need to upgrade. Those who have older iPhones are lining up for iPhone 8, and to my surprise quite many went for the 256GB version that cost almost as much as the 64GB iPhone X. I also know people who bought ip8 only for the wireless charging, they have these phone boxes in their cars, with antenna amplifier and wireless charging.
One have to be pretty crazy about android to say ip8 is a failure, lets not forget the tiny little fact that it outsells S8 and N8 combined and will still sell well after those are forgotten.

Anticipation of the X is killing the sales of the 8.

People whining about a new design every year should look at Apple's other products. Has the MacBook and iPad changed much in design the last 7-10 years? Yet, nobody complains about bezels on TVs and desktop displays. Only iPhones where people whine about new designs.

The rat race to get the X before the year ends and spend $200 more over the 8 Plus which essentially has same specs as the X is for people to chase this ego-driven feeling of having it before more people have it. But after awhile, X is as common as the 5s and 6 design.

                                      iPhone 8 = 4 & 6 remix

2017 is the first time in iPhone's history when it is considered a tick and tock update.

                                      Tick - X
                                      Tock - 8 (6sss/7s)

I will still pick up the iPhone X but more likely when there are promos for it next year. I like the number 10 and letter X. Then I will pick up the 2020 iPhone because #13 is another lucky number for me. The one I will sometimes refer to as iPhone X3.

Please Apple, no more "s" naming schemes. Just keep it Roman numerical every year.

                                      2017 - X
                                      2018 - XI
                                      2019 - XII
                                      2020 - XIII

Keep the naming simple even if the design is the same. X is able to reboot the naming for iPhones. Only the iPhone 4 was named properly for the generation it was released. The 4s, 5s, and 6s, ruined the generation order.

Being called iPhone XI (11) next year would also make it two numbers higher than the Galaxy S and Note line.

I agree it sale of IP8 is weak because nobody buy lolz. I guess Apple shouldnt introduce IP8 and IPX at the same time. Should be IP8 1st, after few months then introduce IPX. Or Apple should just introduce IPX only this year 2017 since its their 10th anniversary. Next year then introduce IP8 since the year is 201'8'. I can see most people would prefer IPX.
I guess Apple will not have much profit from IP8 sale, but for sure will get high profit from IPX (if people doesnt mind about it price tag).
