But I realized you said "can be", so it's fair enough. I think so too, but it's not that I solely saying that any dedicated tech is definitely better than a smartphone. Any smartphone has the possibility of giving a better experience but until today, when it comes to quality, I think smartphones still can only come close to a dedicated tech.

Also, may I say that it blurs the background naturally?
Also, may I say its better for male human's portrait, because it has a more natural field of view, mostly showing a wider jawline?
Wide angle distortion also goes away with a telephoto lens.
In fact, telephoto's exactly what I want in my phone.

Its unlikely that telephoto mobile camera can ever have main camera's aperture value.
Because that would require double the size of aperture ring, as the main camera, to compensate for lesser light entering the longer telephoto lens.
This is however I think, easily possible in a N90 styled phone... Yes, I'm talking about Nokia N90... Surprised? Well, innovation days were awesome, right?

The telephoto lens is just silly. A wide angle is much more useful in more situations. Zoom can be done with software (digitally). Wide angle needs hardware. So having wide angle is far better. I hardly ever see people needing to zoom but I always see people trying to step back or hold the phone further away. Telephoto really is just pointless.

It's a GIMMICK... With smartphones, the camera "evolution" has peaked. It use to be about adding more and more megapixels. An 8MP sensor, can output a photo, that would be capable of printing an A3 (ledger) size photo. Who prints photos from camera phones, let alone THAT large? More megapixels just allows you to zoom/crop, without losing as much detail. Adding more and more to that mix, can introduce crosstalk as the signal to noise ratio gets too high. Then the camera software tries to mask out the noise, resulting in a flat photo.
This "dual camera" nonsense is just another way to capture more customers. More is better, so if one lens is good, two should be better. The bokeh (blur background) is pretty much artificial, and will never achieve the blur that a good dSLR lens can achieve. There is a reason dSLR prime lenses are expensive after all. Think you will get anywhere near the photo quality from a pinhole sensor of that of even an APS-C sensor, not to mention a full frame sensor is just laughable.
You want better quality out of a smartphone camera? Tell the manufacturers you don't care about how thick the smartphone is, or if it has a hump on the back. Increase the size of the battery, increase the size (not the pixel count) of the image sensor, and put a real retractable 5-10x optical zoom lens, THEN you'll have a better smartphone camera.
If it wasn't for OIS, most smartphone photos would be blurry worse than they are now because people don't know how to hold a camera, to take a photo properly.

Umm, the Zenfone 3 zoom has both its cameras with similar specs except the focal length. The specs are no slouch either, it is as good as Samsung's implementations.
However it is unavailable in many places and pricey. No wonder you are not aware of it.

Not even the mighty pixel and HTC 11.. I'll just have to live with it until Nokia makes another breakthrough in imaging.. Till then no new cameraphones for me thanks even with all those gimmicks I'll be happy standing at the peak of image quality with my 808

Anonymous, 02 Oct 2017Panasonic CM1 beats any Nokias.I'm sorry but the CM-1 with its 1" sensor failed to beat 1020 with its 1/1.8" sensor, let alone the mighty 808 with its 1/1.2".. No offense but the image results speaks for itself.. I too have high hopes when the CM1 came out but was utterly disappointed

Don´t need dual marketing cameras. We need bigger sensors, bigger single pixels, nice lenses made of glass plus image stacking. Remember that we had those things some years before: Nokia, Panasonic CM1. We even had phones with real zoom lenses.
It would be easy to implement most of it in todays phones, maybe they would be slightly thicker. Nobody would care about it and they could produce very thin phones without nice cameras, too. Why customers don´t have real choice anymore?
