Because Android has such a huge user base, there's tremendous incentive to find exploits. Stagefright was merely the first, at this point we pretty much have one major Android exploit being patched per month.
All these exploits are patched in the monthly security updates, but few phones outside nexus/pixel phones receive them every day 5 of every month. And today most people don't worry, since "they never install suspect apps", or even worse, "install an anti virus". No anti virus can stop exploits such as blueborne or broadpwn.
I am of the opinion that hackers still haven't realized how much damage they can do with android exploits, but that won't last forever.

unlike the Pixel situation here ... 3 years only promise without any valid reason .

dont compare Apple phones to Android Phones. yes I agree , Android pones are crap if they become old.

Same with iPhone 5 which was supported for 5 years. Shipping with iOS 6 in 2012 and got its latest update about a month ago with iOS 10.3.3.
iPhone 4s was a similar story. Generally apple supports for 5 years. And contrary to what most on gsmarena think, you do NOT need to update. Everything will still work fine and you can hide the update notification. Or you can do what I do. I update to the new version. If my 5s becomes significantly slower apple gives you ~2 weeks to revert back to the older version.
