NoToBrandLoyalty, 05 Oct 2017Yeah, but then your iPhone becomes so bogged down and slow ... moreSeriously, stop talking sht like this.

4s was the fisrt iPhone to get 4th major update.

And since then, i5 and i5s can handle the 4th major upgrade very well.
Yup, it’s slower. But it’s not THAT slow. Still more than fast and very usable.

I hope 5s would still get the iOS12. 5s is Apple’s first 64bit and their first debut with M co-procie.

I think Apple will experiment on 5 major upgarde cycle.
And i don’t mind if that goes really f slow. I’d buy a new one. It’s the time anw.

I'd take 2 OS updates that keeps the phone as fast and responsive for more than 4 years any day over having 6 OS updates but makes the phone as useful as a pet rock by its 3rd year.

      Three years huh ?

Apple 6 years old phones still get latest versions.

3 years of OS updates is fine. No point having 5-6 years of OS updates if it causes your phone to be bogged down and unusable in the end (forcing you to buy a new phone) just like what Apple did with iOS.

That's brilliant approach! May I suggest another solution? Buy an iPhone, sorry if you already have one.

Software updates have both a good and a bad side like most other things. I'll be focusing on the bad side as it often gets ignored or goes missing when people talk about software updates.. From my personal experience of handling a bunch of phones from different brands, one similarity which I've noticed is that, as your current phone starts to age and the manufacturer is due to release an "upgraded variant" of your current phone (mostly flagship & mid tier phones), the manufacturer intentionally pushes OTA software updates to your current phone to ruin things (degradation in camera quality, battery backup and overall user experience), therefore frustrating the user to upgrade to the manufacturer's new offerings. This is called planned obsolescence, a clever business strategy which seems to work very well for many brands. Unfortunately, I've seen many flagship and even mid range phones degrading in overall performance after software updates.. It isn't surprising at all to see people complaining about their phones on many forums after OTA updates.

Not worth the insane price premiums for what those phones are.

This isn't supposed to mean that all smartphones with snapdragon 835 will be updated.

Kyo, 04 Oct 2017Yes I remember Google completely dumping the Galaxy Nexus a... moreThe Galaxy Nexus had a TI OMAP 4460. Texas Instruments had decided after the 4.3 JB update that they would step out of the mobile SoC market, thus they stopped making new drivers. And without Treble, you CANNOT update a device to another OS unless you can provide the updated drivers.
So it's neither on Samsung or Google, but on TI

Small step in right direction nice work google

Most phones including iPhones get slower and have poor battery life after 3-4 updates anyway.

so they should for such ridiculous pricing once more.

Where have I heard that many times before only to be lied to. I will believe it when I see it. That's the approach I take with every android offering from every oem's, Google included, no exception.

Apple is at the moment at 5 years. iPhone 5 from Late 2012 got iOS 10.3.3 from Late 2017. They upped that number every 2 years (with the S model) so far, so I wouldn't be surprised if iPhone 5s even got iOS 12, which will get updates until late 2019.

Planned Obsolescence on year 2020? That's good since every flagship should be replaced every three years. Just like I replaced my 2012 PC to 2017 PC.
