But lack of apps and therefore lack of phones to chose from was its fate. I have used all 3 Main mobile systems. iOs was maybe the best, but only one hardware manufacturer means high price... MS wp was very promising and very sleek system. Android... well Android is so fragmented that it is actually several quite similar os systems put together.
Google should use tighter regulation to Android and it would be Great os, now it just big swamp. And iOs is so closed that no competition... we would have needed WP to keep the competition on, but it ended. It is very hard to bring new os to the market, when everything you have in tied to os. It seems too Late to make new os without automatically losing to the two Big.

We now have Apple who still after 10 years won't install memory expansion on its phone.
Things that were on Android you have to pay megabucks on iOs

This notion that you can unlock your phone using your face, is a feature that merits a 20% hike in price is ridiculous

Take a look at the specs which are improving the CPU, in the main and 8+, iPhone X

So Android / iOs remain, now iOs gets this face unlock ,.Android must follow suit, competition diverts innovation into areas where Apple want it to go in order to charge.

Security improvement is not being able to unlock your phone in the dark

There are Windows apps on iOs which shows Windows phone offer something.
Windows 10 is essentially an malware released by Microsoft

Windows 8 is viable and can be upgraded to include all the features envisaged for Windows 10

I will go back to Android, but hate the fact that it seems compelled to follow the money making "inventions"

You don't need face unlock, you need in addition to Reset Protection sim card swap protection, this offers always on, ie you can issue security /find commands as the phone is connected to your internet

AnonD-687379, 09 Oct 2017As much as it’s sad, I think it’s the right thing to do for... moreThere is no need for a new OS. Why create a new OS if the current Android fulfilled every need? Android can do everything that a proper OS needs to be able to do.

If it ain't broke don't fix it!

jeanduc, 09 Oct 2017of course its gonna be dead, first no wallpaper only... moreYour last sentence is totally wrong.

A phone OS must be the same or as similar as possible to a desktop computer OS. Windows Phone failed, because it was the exact opposite of the desktop Windows. It had useless UI, no features, not even a file manager, no customization. Conversely, the desktop Windows has a lot of features and customization (except Windows 10 which is crap).

Among the other pone OSes, only Android (and maybe Symbian/Meego/Maemo) is the closest to, moreover, it's almost the same as a desktop Windows. Android is the best and most advanced phone OS ever. Android has customization, freedom, a lot of features, file manager, Adobe Flash player, can handle the pheripheral devices through the USB port (USB OTG) like the desktop Windows can, Android supports freeform floating windows (since Android 7) the same as the desktop Windows has. When people first heard about Windows Phone, they expected that it has those features that the desktop Windows has. But they had to realize that Android offers what Windows Phone should have to offer in the first place.

Android is the mobile world's Windows PC.

Windows Phone failed because Microsoft wouldn't let the OEMs put spywares on the OS.

Windows phone is dead because they made crappy phones with crappy specs for a high price. You enter in a market where there are android and ios you dont make a phone and sell it for the same price they do.You make a phone and sell it for a low price so people familiarize with the platform.Devs can make apps if there are more ppl using it.

Anonymous, 09 Oct 2017Stephen Elop was a huge mistakeActually.. Stephen Elop was very hardware focused and would not have let the phone ecosystem die so easily, same with Ballmer - WP was third globally, at about 3% - which would have maintained or increased over time, had they continued to release more phones. Phones are important to their Windows on every device vision because things like the now dying Groove Music service, Maps, Cortana/Search, UWP apps, they flourish on the phone ecosystem. For more than half of the people who use smart phones, their phone is their primary computer, not a PC.

The real reason why Windows Phone has died is not the lack of developer support. WP died because it was a very limited, restricted, featureless, useless mobile OS with ugly and useless tile UI. WP have never been in the same league as Android.

The fact that Microsoft still blame the lack of developer support, it means that they still haven't learned their lesson, haven't learned the real reason why WP died. This means Microsoft is Darwin Award winner.

"Of course we'll continue to support the platform.. bug fixes, security updates, etc."
Come on, please stop this non-sense. Back then, when Symbian OS was discontinued, at that time also, these so called bug fixes & security updates were assured. But never received any till date.
After Windows 10, now it's Blackberry's turn to declare their OS10 dead.

Anonymous, 09 Oct 2017For anyone not familiar with American culture: Catch-22 ... moreYeah uhm, Nope.
That doesn't explain why the iPhone became successful to begin with.

Remember Microsoft had a huge lead in front of Google and Apple.
They chose to sit, and NOT innovate.
Whereas the others were embroiled in this competitive war. By the time MS could react it was very late, but not impossible. Yet, even after getting a big wake up call MS still decided to be lazy.

WP7 was a WindowsCE software, a bad bandaid, and it hit them back.
MS should've put their resources away from Windows 8.... they already had a stranglehold on the marketshare with Windows 7... and focussed into perfecting the new MetroUI, Microsoft App Store, UWP.

Then they should've done more with the mobile segment, by building/sponsoring devices better than the iPhone and Galaxy. Then shipping them for free year after year to developers. And selling them for cheaper in the market, with a free $20 Windows card with every purchase, to get users unto their platform. They could've done this aggressively for 5 years, and the market would've reacted by putting Windows Phones in the #1 #2 #3 horserace. Sure, they would've spent a lot of money... but that money would be tiny when considering how much they spent over purchasing and liquidating Nokia.

Such an aggressive push would be like a smart, but lazy kid, cramming for his test the next day. Sure, he might not get the top marks... but he wouldn't fail. And that's what MS did, they let the corporate jargon and political correctness and incompetence as excuses to be lazy, and so they very clearly and predictably failed. No surprises.

Had they capitalized in the period between 2012-14, when Windows phone had a decent 3.5 - 4% of total market share, and cemented their position, we would not be seeing just two mobile OSs remaining in the market.

What an absolute shame. Loved windows phone 8,1, the most modern and awesome looking OS with butter smooth functionality. What a shame.

They could have gone on and made partnerships with more manufacturers and add support for non snapdragon chipsets. They had the base to go for it and make themselves count. Instead, they kept grinding their heels and not doing anything to actually promote the phone.

RIP. Hopefully we will see an optimized version of full windows 10 on Intel powered smartphones soon, given the fact that the technology is already there. There already are 6 inch devices running full windows out there (GPD devices).

Anonymous, 09 Oct 2017Stephen Elop was a huge mistakeStephen Elop was a Trojan horse gift,
                                      sent by Microsoft to Nokia

He is best known for his ill-fated tenure as non-Finn Nokia CEO from 2010 to 2014, which included controversies such as the "burning platform" memo and the company's partnership with Microsoft, resulting in the move to Windows Phone software exclusivity. He was criticised for some of his decisions, which resulted in the company making massive losses financially and in the market. As then head of the Microsoft Devices Group, Elop was in charge of Microsoft's varied product offerings including Lumia phones.

In September 2010, it was announced that Elop would take Nokia's CEO position, replacing Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, and becoming the first non-Finnish director in Nokia's history. On 11 March 2011 Nokia announced that it had paid Elop a $6 million signing bonus, "compensation for lost income from his prior employer," on top of his $1.4 million annual salary
During Elop's tenure, Nokia's stock price dropped 62%, their mobile phone market share was halved, their smartphone market share fell from 33% to 3%, and the company suffered a cumulative €4.9 billion loss

After joining Nokia, Elop issued a company internal memo titled "Burning Platform" which was leaked to the press. The memo likened the 2010 situation of Nokia, in the smartphone market, to a person standing on a burning oil platform: "platform" being a reference to operating systems such as Symbian, Apple iOS and Google Android. By some in the media, the memo was seen as a wake-up call for Nokia, whereas Nokia's Board of Directors saw the memo as act of MISJUDGEMENT and Chairman Jorma Ollila gave bitter feedback for it at a board meeting.

This leaked memo coined a term "Elop effect", a catastrophic one:
                                      The Windows Phone strategy

Put it simple, he's the man responsible for the death of Nokia
He likened Apple iOS and Google Android with Symbian as burning platform, and every Finnish believe this traitor and follow suit to Windows phone.

This guy currently work at Australian Telecom company Telstra. He's rich from his Nokia money anyway...
