Shy sony should sell a 4k hdr top notch sell phone with unique features less than a 4.7 inch iphone v4 launched at 800$ with a bit more bezels than xzp
It is indeed alarming Americans just hate asian brands

580 for a flagship with 4k hdr screen, exceptional camera with 960fps and predictive capture
Front stereo speakers
Ip68
Sd card card and a unique design
But you may like that 500$ op5 which has worse camera, no ip68
No stereo
No 4k or hdr
No sd card
And even that poor thing is not even good in audio output features which sony just put in for fun (ldac, hi res)

Not really the exact reason of your statement , but here's the reason that close to the reality of Sony : After they lost battle on low-end and decided to up their E series par with XA series and deficit during their hay-day of Z3 era , they restructured their company completely mostly at their Xperia lineup . They're doing their very new strategies on Mobile division : They now focus how they can make "earnings per devices sales" (1) , NOT "total earnings of total quantity of sales" (2) like most OEM did (their tablet lineup got axed was also affect of the restructuration .)
Ex : Samsung sells GS7E for $550 for 1 device sold (sales 100 = $55000)
Sony sells XZP for $800 for 1 device sold (sales 25 = $20000)
Maybe Sony sells less than Samsung in total earnings per total quantity sales , but the average of Sony earnings per devices is better than Samsung . As Sony earns $250 more earnings per devices than Samsung (Samsung : $550 average ; Sony : $800 average) to avoid more loss than before . Cause , when they did the former strategies already lost a lot of profit (2) .
So , i think that's the way or how their new strategies works since everything has changed . That example i given was only for their one of them (XZP / S7E) , not combined all of their other products like J series / XA series .

I hope people don't forgot how price launch of iPhone X and Note8 as XZ Premium was competed at this segment (i know it's expensive for XZP at price launch : $800 , but look at Note8 and iPhone X price launch cough *$900-$999* cough) . XZ1 was competed for S8 although difference in timing of launch .

I bought my XZ Premium luminous chrome as "used" but in mint condition for just $350 with it's original quick charge 3.0 and usb type c, and nice JBL headphones(as brand new).
that was a great deal... though, the phone was imported from France, and it was on SFR carrier, but i bought as unlocked. So, for those who cannot offord for a brand new unit, just keep checking in ebay or amazon for good deals, bidding, or used units rather than paying $500 or little more. Thank you :)

Should sell for 400 or less, I mean why they bother at all, Sony market share in US is non existing, why not just to give up, or fire all executives in the USA, because they don't know what they doing anyway

The fact remains that those are Sony's competitors. The consumers are the ones needing convincing. Price is one major factor in a competitive market like Android phones.
Why wait until your sales number to die?
Why not take the initiative and price it competitively from the start?
Sony phones do not have the pull of the Galaxy/iPhone for the general consumer.

Why not launch it at lower price?
The techs sites will give good review, push up demands.
Instead Sony put a massive price on it, then small number of phones sold ... then lower the price but it's too late as the big spenders already bought their flagship phones.
You can now get a similarly priced Galaxy S8, LG G6, Mate 10 etc...
Sony need to be ahead of the pricing curve!
