Apple should re-imagine the iPod Shuffle

22 October 2017
There are times when a smart phone is simply too big. Is it time for Apple to bring back an iPod focused only on music?

AnonD-708551, 22 Oct 2017No 3.5mmTrue that. But I guess, when you are a Apple fan, the lack of the 3.5 mm headphone jack won't bother you anyway.... considering they even removed it from their iPhones.

Like I said, that's why I personally try to stay away from Apple......

My thoughts exactly, so much that I too own the last generation iPod shuffle (same colour and all) and a Garmin Fenix 5. The idea that an Apple Watch is a replacement for an iPod is misleading, I don’t have to change my ways to use an iPod, is an item that I use when I need it only, a watch is complete different story. I considered for a moment to get an Apple watch without the strap and use it as an iPod but no, you have to actually wear the ugly thing for it to even work, also the fact that they manage to put Apple Music on that tiny divice means they have the technology to put it on an iPod shuffle but they won’t. In my opinion they should get rid of the rather irrelevant iPod touch and bring back a smaller music focused iPod like the nano or shuffle, something simple without apps that is not a copy of the iPhone, like the iPod originally was but bring it to this era, with bluetooth headphones and availability to wirelessly sync with Apple Music, like the apple watch without the apps, heart rate, payment and all of that unnecessary stuff, just music

I think the iPod shuffle has been reincarnated as the Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE. Pair it with Airpods and Apple Music.

If money is not a problem, buy an Apple Watch Series 3, remove the wristbands and use it as a small iPod Nano. Like you said you also get Apple Music with it....

If I am not mistaken in the past, way before they unveiled the Apple Watch, Apple did the vice-versa. They sold the iPod Nano with a strap so you could essentially turn it into a watch.

I am suggesting the Apple Watch (and not some other Walkman-like devices), since you seem to be engulfed in Apple Music and Apple's ecosystem (which I try to stay away from BTW.) Also if you could turn off all the sensors, and configure the settings properly (AMOLED black watch-face, lower brightness, reduce the screen-on time etc.), you could eke out a day's usage from the watch....... I guess....

                Great article “Fanman”!!

                  Nice article!

For the record, I still own the last gen aluminium iPod shuffle. Dont use it for anything now, though, as I stream mostly only from Apple Music.

What I personally believe is the Apple Watch is a good replacement for another iPod shuffle. Because, you can use it on the go, in a gym, etc. You can stream directly off the Apple Music (please correct if wrong) to any wirless or wired (through bt receiver) headset/speakers which is a feature only great to have.

While not on the go, I would prefer a HomePod. So two different devices based on where we use them.

Currently, while doing cardio I use a pair of JBL Charge wirelessly connected to each other for my stereo separation needs. They both (actually one of them) pull music off my iPhone through bt while sitting at either end of my treadmill. The iPhone sits in the center.

Paul, you make some good points and Apple probably has considered such a product, but...

...I do not see how this ties into Apple's strategy.
Apple is now in the position of doubling-down on the iPhone first and foremost. It's their cash-cow, it's their icon. If tomorrow mysteriously all the Macintosh's, iTVs, iPads, iPods, iWatches and iSpeakers disappeared.... well, Apple would still be a dominant figure in the world and still making truck-loads of profits.

iPhone is the centre of Apple. iOS is second to that centre, and everything else is geared to support that foundation. Having a iPod Shuffle that ties into Spotify with a 3.5mm headset jack, will mean Apple is making a product which doesn't use their services (Apple Music), their accessories (Beats/earPod), nor supports the iPhone (as the iWatch is the wearable they focus on).

So while its a great idea for a consumer, its a bad idea for Apple.
You gotta see things through the eyes of the investors... they simply want a larger profit margin, more locked-down ecosystem with higher market share in that order. It would be counter-intuitive to their movement.

In the future what I do see happening is that the iOS gets more powerful like Android. Then it will have supplementary services from TVs, Speakers, Cars, SmartHomes all in a more integrated fashion, where if Apple cannot make that product they will impose a license to the makers to integrate compatibility and probably some sort of "user experience" benchmark so that the products look and feel premium. And not to forget the future of consoles, AR and VR either. Whilst, iOS slowly transitions its way into an iOS Laptop with the fastest ARM processor, crazy long battery life, and support for Professional Productivity Programs that we see on Macs and PC (eg/ Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro X, PhotoShop) as a productivity tool for content creators (photographers, vloggers, musicians) who are mobile/on the go.

                              ....good article nonetheless.

If you want a tiny music player made by Apple, Apple wants you to buy the Apple Watch instead.

Not ever having bought into the whole apple side of the tech world I can't imagine not just dragging & dropping my music onto my phone or usb drive for my travel tunes but I get the point. How much of a void has passing technology created in the apple lifestyle? This also impacts on all of us bcus unfortunately when apple designs a sneeze, the rest of the world catches a cold.

I still use walkman when going jogging... the iPad nano was terrible because you have to use its own program to load music. Not sure if new versions did work like USB memory sticks but older version was really terrible in that Sense.
