Most phones with bezel-less display comes with 18:9 aspect ratio and videos which are 16:9 doesn't really cover the whole screen and it crops the video if you try to make it fullscreen. Though surfing internet and many other things do benefit from larger screen.
Also while gaming in landscape mode it doesn't help with smaller top/bottom bezel as you can't rest the finger properly.
On the other hand stereo speaker on phones are nothing to write home, but they are still miles ahead of tinny sounding mono speakers on most flagships.
No clear winner I'd say but I voted for stereo speaker as its really annoying to have a ear piercing speaker on the rare occasion you actually use it.

LOL...You consider yourself an Audiophile and use Beats headphones!?
Maybe you should refrain from calling yourself Audiophile because no one that likes music a little bit would be caught dead using that piece of crap...

Simon, 30 Oct 2017Frankly, I almost never use the built in speakers on a phon... moreMy main use for phone speakers is for the ringtones, notifications and sometimes random on-speaker calls, if I'm in a private place and don't happen to have earphones on (my in-ears have a built-in mic). Yeah, comparing tiny phone speakers is comical to read - while there are some differences in clarity and volume (Mate 9 is a very loud phone, GSMA also noticed this in their review), it's still the same flat sound in the end, no matter how you try to spin that fact. Better than no sound at all, but that's all it is.
I agree with your opinion; bigger screen over tiny speakers, not even a competition.

Frankly, I almost never use the built in speakers on a phone. The difference between a pair of horrible speakers isn't any better than a single horrible speaker in my book. Even a tablet speakers are too small to enjoy, but at least you can kind of hear stereo.
In the meantime, the bigger screen on the same sized phone makes all the difference in the world. The lack of fingerprint sensor and physical buttons come to my mind when I think of what I'm sacrificing to get it, but speakers would be my very last priority on a phone that due to its size will have speakers ranging from poor to very poor, which doesn't change a thing, really.

I want front-facing/firing dual two stereo loudspeakers.
This is not for music, or to please audiophiles. If you are an audiophile, you would NOT use bluetooth as its bad. If you are an audiophile, you would use a microUSB connection from your phone to an external DAC, which then feeds audio to headphones that cover your entire ears (ie "cans").
Using the "audiophile argument" is a strawman.
I want/need my speakers (a la ZTE Axon 7) for videos. In particularly, YouTube, Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram videos. It could be something quick on the go. Or it could be for a time shared with friends at work/school/cafe/ etc etc. The speakers can also aid when playing a mobile game.
This is not a difficult concept to understand. You need a decent speaker quality (loudness AND clarity). You need a decent direction (front-firing for videos). You need a decent amount (two noticeably better than one, more do help but have diminishing returns). Again, compare the ZTE Axon 7 to something like the iPhone 7 Plus... you'll notice the iPhone struggling to reach the same loudness of the ZTE but doing so with much more distortion. It definitely makes it a less pleasant experience to watch a quick 5 minute video on.... a task which a modern superphone should have no issues doing.

I want small bezels as well as good speakers. Now a small amount of bezels as in the Pixel 2XL with FFS or bottom firing stereo speakers.

I want smaller bezels because pocketability is always an issue. What I can live with is 11mm thick phone as compared to a 8mm thick phone. A 5.2" minimum bezel phone of thickness upto 11mm can be a very practical device.

Anonymous, 30 Oct 2017Your logic is ridiculous, because bluetooth (Well, portable... moreThe only thing I mentioned using Bluetooth was to connect my phone to amplifier + external speakers! It's simple, not everybody simply need to have high-quality sound - that's how most people are happy with their sound bars or small Bluetooth-speakers paired with their phones (one of my friends does this, he said it sounds good in his opinion and does not need better sound - I understand that too, he's not into audio, as simple as that).
I personally don't want to settle for that kind of flat sound, unless it's to share something with people around me and I can't use anything better than phone's own speakers.

FreezeGame, 30 Oct 2017No matter if a smartphone has front facing, stereo speakers... moreThe purpose of stereo speaker in a smartphone is not to please audiophile, but have better placement of speaker that is on the front, and to be somewhat substitute to hear audio of a video or game when you are not really need to use a headphones,
You seriously didn't need a $700 dac, headphones setup and bt speaker just to watch youtube video aren't you? Or playing some game, while waiting for say... Pc to boot up,
Mono is ok but stereo is appreciated, like headphones jack is appreciated in the era of it's extinction

Anonymous, 30 Oct 2017FINALLY someone who thinks like me. Yes, yes, yes! You simp... moreYour logic is ridiculous, because bluetooth (Well, portable ones) can't compare to a great home hifi system either. So just because it's not great, we shouldn't listen to music anywhere but else? All people using bluetooth speakers must be crazy for listening to music without hearing 30hz frequencies.
Get a life.

Or randomly drive to the beach & chill with your bae at night, no bluetooth speakers n u want to play some songs to create the mood?
cause that happened to me. And without those dual speakers from my HTC, probably wouldn't' be as memorable or fun...

FreezeGame, 30 Oct 2017No matter if a smartphone has front facing, stereo speakers... moreFINALLY someone who thinks like me. Yes, yes, yes! You simply can't get a full, rich and detailed sound from tiny built-in speakers that phones have. That's why it's pretty much the same what kind of tiny music-ruiners (in stereo or mono) a phone has, as I won't use them for serious listening anyway. All it matters that it's loud enough to allow me hear ringtones, notifications and on so, even in a noisy environment.

Vegetaholic, 30 Oct 2017Come one guys, no one listens music through loudspeakers, i... moreThe pixel 2 XL seems to have been getting praised from it's speakers and it still has the 18.9 screen. Many people use the loudspeaker, what if you are doing a menial task and don't wanna hassle with headphones/earphones or are sharing a song/video with someone. Not to mention more expensive phones are yes getting the spec bump and great screens, yet we were almost always getting that kind of upgrade for around the same price so we should be expecting more for our $.

A Question to ask ?
Where you can use that speaker(s)?
At Work?
In class?
I remember my classmates doing that (many ever used external speaker) and annoying me with their "gray" deafening music.
In Transport?
Where?
In Home?
Why use phone at home, where you can use a computer and better audio system?
No.
For an average user uses headphone.
And as Paul mentioned phone audio will never be that good. Sorry , but many times technological breakthroughs can't compensate for size reduction.

Bottom line, I dont mind minimal bezel BUT I think every flagship should be coming with tweeter + bass combo like U11 or Iphone 8. The flagships are starting to creep up even higher in price so we should be expecting more out of them aside from annual spec bump. I understand these aren't dedicated speakers and size limits are very real, yet a phone like the v30 touting a class leading audio experience should not be stuck with one measly bottom speaker. I wouldn't want to buy an extra Bluetooth speaker if i am not using headphones or cup the phone every time i share a video with someone.

(abit) bigger bezals for better audio is better just like what google has done with pixel 2 xl.
But we don't need an extra big bezels for just (abit) better audio like iphone 8.

FreezeGame, 30 Oct 2017No matter if a smartphone has front facing, stereo speakers... moreFront firing stereo speakers is underwhelmingly TRASHY? I beg to disagree
For the joy of ears let me give you bit enlightment...
I know HTC isn't hit anymore, amd their phone distribution is akward I can going on...
But what I'm talking here is the phone named One M8 Harman/kardon.
That's your benchmark folks!
Not just regular HTC One m8, it's the harman/kardon hardware inside.
Sadly, it's a US Sprint only phone.
If you audiophille and you own one, you will be amazed how the tiny phone actually can produce that crisp sound all the instruments on the music delivers out loud and richly. I do and still amazed till date!
No other phone like it, and perhaps no one will ever surpassed this classic greatness
