Active cooling is one of the worst ideas for a phone. It's as bad idea as the notch and the non-removable battery.
The solution is simple. Make phones with metal body (and removable battery), then add heat pipes that transfer the heat from the CPU to the metal body of the phone.

Not going to happen unless they turn smartphones into portable consoles that can be plugged to HDTVs with proper controller support like the Nintendo Switch. Storage limitations is also a major hurdle that must be overcome before people take smartphone gaming seriously.
Let's face it. Nobody needs ultra fast SOCs for mobile phones right now. With severely limited touch controls all mobile games are pretty much "doodle worthy".

As much as i found the evolution of smartphones exciting, there are factors to be considered in gaming. As you GSM boys said, heat. There is no possible way to reduce the heat from a mobile processor without increasing its width. I have an idea that a mobile manufacturer will make a smartphone with a little hole from the one side to the other, so we can do something for the heat ourselves. Or having heat pipes reaching the outside of a phone like antenna lines do.
Something like that would help with the heat a lot. Yeah processors become smaller and smaller but nothing is done for the heat.
Undeniably phone manufacturers limit the power of a processor. One plus proved it with the whole benchmark cheat thing, but all they did was to let the processor run with all its cores for longer than others did. So it's obvious they all keep the processors from running at their full power.
I wonder how we can get around this.. Time will tell..

Kangal, 06 Nov 2017While I accept your premise; Geekbench sucks comparing diff... moreNo they can't they are still two, three instructions wide & with small instructions set while SIMD's (even with recent rework A55 - A75) are way behind but they still kick a shit out of Atoms that recently became 4 instructions wide. Arm definitely has enough power to run Linux comfortably and we will see how will things with Windows work out which is entirely on M$. I would love to see just one manufacturer to start respecting silicone limitations as their is no much use of over grown & clocked one that throttles. Want to see arm competing in the ultra portable segment as I certainly think it can with DynamicIQ as let's say hexa A75 with two A55 for simple tasks would map the floor regarding general use & purposes core's rest is pretty much what you wish to accomplish (general & special purpose accelerators along with fixed function ASICS blocks, SDR, IO blocks & RF elements).

This is hilarious. Phones with bloated benchmarks that fail to account for major differences in terms of the operating system amongst other things do not put them on the same level as a proper gaming machine.
