I've had the 2,8 & 9...as far as software updates, I've never really given it much thought.
Why? Because the phone "just works"! Never had an issue yet!
Great price, fantastic phone.
(I use Nova Prime launcher).

AnonD-714732, 10 Nov 2017I bought the Mate 9 a few months ago and loved it, but was ... moreThe built-in speakers sound as flat as any phone speaker out there, but Mate 9's speakers are pretty much the loudest, ear-piercing ones I've ever heard personally - just what the GSMA's own review said about this phone. It's really, really loud and sound doesn't even distort at max volume. Your ears won't like the volume, but at least you won't miss a call. :D

The security patch is one month behind always, but at least I've gotten them in a monthly basis, so I should get another one this month or at least Oreo sometime before 2018 (it's now in beta-testing phase). I did not expect to get almost the same update speed as I had with my Nexus 6, so I'm really impressed. Huawei seems to be trying to fix their old habits of not updating their phones, which is very much needed. So far so good.

I bought the Mate 9 a few months ago and loved it, but was lured in with a Samsung Note 8. I hate the Note 8, the sound quality is the worst, speakerphone is bad and calls sound muffled. I bought the Mate 9 again and I'm so pleased with it, much better performance, better sound quality ( it is a phone and it should sound good) At this price it's a real bargain. I will mention that Huawei has done an amazing job with the screen quality on this phone, super shape and very bright.

the mate 9 is smartphone that will age well,it has all the necessary attributes for that.well worth it.
