Google Pixel 2 photos/videos display major banding with LED lights around

14 November 2017
LEDs do not emit stable lights - they flicker - but most high-end phones do not have issues with this behavior.

I'm still having this issue - Google replaced my Pixel 2 XL due to audio recording issues on videos, and the banding issue... replacement device arrived and still has banding issues but audio issues were fixed... here's my google photos album of the banding issues... https://goo.gl/P5x62L

It will solve the problem. The pixel camera's default auto exposure settings and auto hdr processing may need to be fixed in upcoming updates for 'auto only camera users' or users who never use 'manual' iso or shutter speed settings. Capturing computer screens on auto mode on any camera pose the same banding problem especially as the auto modes default to unnecessarily high shutter speeds. A slower shutter speed always solves the banding problem although the solution is not always easy for users who only know auto mode photography.

LEDs have a non-linear relationship between voltage and brightness. Also, they are more efficient at higher voltage. Almost all LED in use whether it is in smartphones, TVs, monitors uses PWM to control the brightness rather than vary the voltage.

Anonymous, 15 Nov 2017Geez. It is weird this is made a major issue when it happen... moreSome cheap and defective led lights also flicker badly with large swings in minimum and maximum illumination suring the alternating current cycle. It is not noticeable to many but causes headaches in sensitive people.

Geez. It is weird this is made a major issue when it happens to all phones and yes, even dSLR's and camcorders when the shutter speed is faster than the natural frequency of the ambient led light source or fluorescent light source. The solution is simply to dial down the shutter speed or the ISO if the phone has manual settings. It's not a defect. It's ignorance. Why not Xenon flash, maybe some Nokia/HMD phones ? And...new Google phones wins (even with iPhone) in the number of failures, at least so far.

Google have released beta products this year charging obnoxious prices and omitting useful features. Nexus had great value, barring camera pixel has nothing over nexus series. And Nexus 5 was 399$, twice the price for better camera??

Google should focus on software and partner with one or two companies and do something like android one project but with some high-end phones.
I've owned the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 and 5 all of this devices were actually really good and worth the price but I don't think I would ever buy a Pixel Phone, it just makes no sense cuz besides the camera and stock android there is nothing worth to pay the Apple price for this phone. I can really understand people who complain about different issues with pixel. They paid a lot of money and many have some really weird issues, next time they gonna for Samsung/LG/HTC or Apple. I don't even know at the moment who bought Pixel or Pixel 2. Everybody is buying something else cuz of the price they can get an iPhone and this something different for them. A pixel is still just another android phone.
I really like my G6 and its actually a really good device and you can get it under 400 euro brand new or for around 300 on ebay (used in best condition).

Geez I kinda feel pity for all those people that bought the Pixel 2. Good thing I have my standards:
                                        - SD card slot
                                        - 3.5mm jack
                                        - IP68 or MIL waterproofing
If a phone lacks one of those, it can be gold plated with diamomds all over. I'm NOT interested.
By the way, with that price you can buy a decent laptop!
                                        Talk about brainwashing..
