Samsung will keep using heat pipes in 2018, 2019 might bring vapor chambers

17 November 2017
Vapor chambers are more efficient but are too bulky for phones right now.

AnonD-694886, 17 Nov 2017Do you even understand the difficulties of reducing silicon... moreWe all know the difficulties, but TRUE INNOVATORS are committed on moving forward and pushing the boundaries of what we can imagine. It's the same way as to how we thought 28nm is the smallest possible size of silicone for smartphone processors but REAL INNOVATORS managed to get it twice as small as 14nm and now on our current 10nn solution.

kingcobra, 17 Nov 2017And then the phone will cost $1200 and the cycle of complai... moreAt least that price tag will be highly justified. Just because something has changed drastically (and mostly became WORSE in other things) doesn't mean they can already price the phone as if it is in the Sun (hard to get should I say) *cough cough FRUIT cough cough*

Anonymous, 17 Nov 2017what do you mean no phone had vapor chambers ? i can tell ... moreThe lumia solution is not necessarily a vapour chamber, it just a heat pipe with a little water inside, same solution as Z5 Premium,
For nokia 8, it use a heat spreader, solution where the heat pipe is connected to a metal midframe to spread the heat evenly, same thing use in XZ Premium and XZ1
S7 only use standard Heatpipe, nothing special

Alien , 17 Nov 2017Ok, I kinda understand why people are so into bezeless, tho... moreSmall battery is choice.
Nothing to do with thin phones.

My Z3+ has 2930mAh ( 6.9mm). While Z5, XZ, XZs and XZ1 has less. They are all thicker.

        Iphone 7+ is 7.3mm. Z3 is 7.3mm too.
Z3 had 3100mAh. More than iphone.

        S8+ has 3500, S7 edge 3600.
S7 Edge is shorter and thinner.

        It is about profits.

Ok, I kinda understand why people are so into bezeless, though I'd rather have some bezels on my phone. Not only for gripping it while using it in landscape mode, but also for impacts with hard floors.
But what I fail to understand is why are people so observed with thin phones. First of all, the battery size is small enough, you sheeple want to make it even smaller.
Also, slimmer phones > bending occurs.
Get a grip people. Know when to say no for crying out loud..

Anonymous, 17 Nov 2017It's another reason why thin phones are shít. Imp... moreI can at least understand 12mm for most people. Especially with the bigger phones.
Though 15mm or so for larger models or just some phones over others would be great.
For all the exact reasons you said.
That could bring speakers back again too. And the projectors on a few more models.
Some keyboards again and zoom lenses too.

Phones would be dramatically better and actually more worthy of these 800-1000 price tags. Or at least easier to swallow.
And there would be different looking phones again. Like how phones actually used to aim for unique designs.

It's another reason why thin phones are shít.

Important features that we miss because the manufacturers and primitive people prefer thinnes over usefulness:
                      - removable, high capacity battery (LG V20 and Galaxy Note 4 with ZeroLemon 10 000mAh extended battery)
                      - 1" camera sensor with OIS (Nokia 808 and Panasonic CM1, though they don't have OIS)
                      - 3.5mm jack
                      - vapor chamber cooling

Phone with these features would be the best, ultimate, perfect, cutting-edge, high-tech tool. It's not a problem if a phone is 10-15-20mm thick as long as it gives the user the best possible quality and features. It's comfortable thickness anyway.

Hasn't Nokia already done this with Nokia 8. The copper pipe and the vapour part? It was there even in 950XL.

Thought it was about time for vapour chambers. If they make it really slim they could make the entire backs of phones the cold side of the vapour chamber.
Efficiency should be higher with lower temperatures, but it might be margin of error sort of change.

i can tell you a dozen phones as far back as 2015 with lumia 950xl
just because apple or samsung didnt use them doesnt mean no phone had it yet

But theoretically they can get as low as 5nm, anything lower is in quantum computer territory.

Anonymous, 17 Nov 2017So what is a vapor chamber? Its a heat pipe only bigger :D Yep, it's pretty much a flat heat "pipe": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_pipe#Vapor_chamber_or_flat_heat_pipes

                                    They are more efficient, though.

Apple should require a water cooling system for the next iPhone and iPad. Well, let see what Apple can do for reducing heat on its devices.
