Weekly poll: what makes a great screen?

26 November 2017
And we're not talking about AMOLED vs. LCD - anything that has great contrast is okay in our book. But what other characteristics are needed?

Sort by:

Anonymous, 26 Nov 2017I have a doubt . Ppl say LCD cant be used for VR because... moreWell, if the screen is of higher resolution, then it means it can work at higher refresh rates on even lower resolutions.
It's like a phone that is capable of recording 4K videos at 30fps can also record 1080p videos at 60fps.

Since the XZ Premium has a 4K HDR screen with a refresh rate of 60Hz, then at 1080p, it can do double at up to 120Hz.
Same thing, if the S8/S8+/Note 8 have 2K HDR screens with a refresh rates of 60Hz, then at 1080p, they can be a half higher at up to maybe 90Hz.

opt, 26 Nov 2017And Sony had it long years ago? man you are one of the reas... moreNot only Sony. Many others, even Samsung also has this technology. Even Apple is working on a similar display technology in the next few years or so. But we do know that Sony makes everything great, at least their own versions are typically better than the competition.
It's like how Sony bought LG's OLED panel for their own TV but provides a much better picture quality than LG's own ones.
Same thing, Sony bought Qualcomm's SoC, which was made by Samsung, and used it much better in their smartphones than how Samsung does their own ones on their own phones; speed tests and real life performance reflect it.

Okay, I'm gonna stop being a troll now. I will say nothing but the truth.
I'll start it with this first fact: Sony makes some of the highest quality products that can easily blow anything in the competition away if only they would be recognized by the society.

Are two answers best for me and best for everyone. Answer for me is nost important is Quality. For others I think is also Quality. Hardware and software symbiosis. Each one without one dont make good display. You can have veery good hardware display, but you don't have good software job proper tools to management screen for your self taste and needs, situations. Its like have good camera without settings. You can't see good view if you can't calibrate screen itself, maybe your screen software bad looking leaved factory and you don't like. We can today see good software implementation and I think we will see latter with Oreo support. If you want know what is perfect display for everyone you can ask Youtube tech reviewer Erica Griffin who specializes in screens quality and accuracy in all screen modes and different test ways and angles. Screen hardware Quality like screen colors and brightness uniformity. Good software support, color accuracy in different sceen modes, screen software management tool for users, esay access tools to user screen calibration way.

Good Quality and accuracy display by me
      Screen harware
      Pixel density no less QHD
18:9 ratio screen size no less that 6inch for me no less than 6.3inch
16:9 ratio no less than 5.7inch for me
      Screen colors and brightness uniformity
No color shifting at different viewig angles
Screen pixels matrix panel RGB pixel arrangement layout to awoid a lot screen issues and have densier pixel (pixels)
Have best sun polarization technique like Nokia ClearBlack Dislpay (CBD) so you don't need brighten up your screen at sun at all
Full light spectrum ambient sensor to match white color balanse temperature with different light envitoment

Screen software support and implementation (good software)
Accuracy colors in different content color spaces SRGB, DCI-P3, to make good screen profiles for everyones needs taste and different content situation
Screen software managment pro tools like screen calibration user itsefl by different content color spaces, color white point balanse calibration and management
Screen good results at grayscale tests
      Screen resolution slider
      Screen Dark mode for night
Screen Light night mode like Night shift, Night light, Bluelightfilter
Screen Reading night mode by grayscale like OnePlius, Kindle

I like a lot doing job with Android Oreo screen software support,
Samsung, Apple, LG, Huawei, HTC, Pixel 2 screen was amazing before battery improvement software update, OnePlus, Sony. Windows Phone OS have and did a lot job in screen software magement tools.

A lot job is did but need go forward a lot for screen Quality and Accuracy improvements. Best if we can find it one place and everyone phone.
      Peace out!

I voted for Contrast, Sunlight legibility, Accurate colours, power efficiency.

        Let me explain my vote.
Pixel density is not a problem for me. 720p is good. 1080p is awesome. In fact, less is good for battery life and performance.
Colors, if accurate are great for understanding the tone of the picture. As they say, "as the artist intended".

120HZ is hardly needed even for gaming. Plus, the involved compromises (as seen in Razer phone review) are too much. Plus, first we need to have fast chipsets that can do 120 fps consistently for most games... But, I'm in support of 120 fps TV-out.

Always on display, not needed. Who asked for it anyways?
Force touch, no idea what it is.

Apple logo somewhere and high price tag. Animated chit is also good.

Rafe Firmani, 27 Nov 2017No HDR10 compliant on the list?Because in reality HDR is software trick, it have nothing to do with hardware. All what its do is dynamically change contrast of scene in movies. But for most part it oversaturate everything or put high contrast everywhere. Its just better to manually set higher contrast and you get better result.

              Again, its a wrong poll.

Everything is about compromise. You can have a 4K resolution on a 5 inch screen, but will it make much of a difference? You can also have a 240Hz refresh rate, but on mobile tasks will it be utilised? How about overly saturated colours? Or extremely bright panel?
              ... all-in-all it is about a compromise!!

I much much rather have a "weak" but balanced screen like:
              - 5.7 inch size
              - 16:9 ratio
              - 1920 x 1080 resolution
              - 60Hz
              - AMOLED
              - Calibrated to sRGB
              - Upto 500cd/m2 nits brightness
              - With great 0.7 watts Average Power Draw (at 400cd/m2)
              - Excellent 170' Viewing Angle
              - Excellent 4.4% Matte reflectivity
              - Can do Always On display without burn-in/problems
              - Priced very cheaply at US$35, to sell for US$300-US$500 devices

              As opposed to:
              - 6.0 inch size + notch cut-out
              - 19:9 ratio
              - 3040 x 1440 resolution
              - 240Hz
              - SAMOLED
              - Calibrated to 100% Adobe RGB
              - Upto 400cd/m2 nits brightness
              - With bad 2.1 watts Average Power Draw (at 400cd/m2)
              - Okay 150' Viewing Angle
              - Bad 6.5% Glossy reflectivity
              - Can do Always On display with slight burn-in
              - Priced very high at US$70, to sell for US$800-US$999 devices

Sure the first display isn't as advanced when it comes to the resolution/pixel density or the extreme refresh rate. However, it gets the basics done right perfectly. The second display has problems with viewing angles, reflections, and is bad under the sun... not to mention its expensive beyond reasonable.

A beautiful WQHD+ 570 ppi curved super amoled HDR display with Always on Display modes embedded with always on 3d touch home button makes it the best display in the world leaving behind any other display on planet. It's obvious the device is Galaxy S8.

Samsung oleds. Everything else is subpar. And haters just cant accept that.

I like a VR-ready Pixel dense screen with low persistency and response time and high contrast - so It being OLED is the very basic requirement. in terms of colors I like a mix of punchy and accurate. Not everything needs to be extremely color accurate, UI elements for example.

Punchy colors (Samsung also inlcudes photo mode for accurate colors), power efficiency, pixel density, and sunlight legibility (sAmoled handles this well. On brightness auto, the screen can pop your eyes outdoors).
