Weekly poll: what makes a great screen?

And we're not talking about AMOLED vs. LCD - anything that has great contrast is okay in our book. But what other characteristics are needed?

To me the durability is the primary, I also want the screen comfort to watching during in dim light environments and outdoors (punch colors is a drawback to me). Pixels density and battery efficiency also important, but every coin has two side.

    High Contrast gives higher visibility under sun light no matter how bright screen is. If check the reviews here all phones above 3900 sunlight contrast ratio are oled.

    What bothers your eyes at night is actually the some LCD have a high value for their lowest brightness.

    If you set 0% brightness for some LCD phones, they will give you more than 30 nits.

    I have a LG tablet, I can easily use 0% at home. It gives me more 3h SoT compare to 35% brightness.

      I voted for colour accuracy, guess that includes colour gamut in this poll.

        High resolution, punchy colors, high brightness, 120hz and power effiency

          I don't see why people still consider sun legibility (nits) an issue. I use a 55$ phone with 720p LCD screen and I've never found a reason increase brightness by more than 50% even when using it directly under the Saharan sun. So those with $700 and above phones should not even have this problem. My only issue with LCD screens is contrast since I love watching videos in the dark.

            Ratio of screen and screen to body ratio being all the hype

            No one remembers the LG BL40 chocolate with 21:9 cinematic (480p vertical res) screen and the communicator e90 with 25:11 (352 approx 360p vertical res)

            those were the best screen ratio for movies, that i had ever seen on a phone

            particularly enjoyed the e90, a solid phone indeed

              Obviously the calibration of the display, that is colour accuracy, whitepoint etc., that's the most important factor of any display, mobile or otherwise, and then there is contrast and sunlight legibility.

                miss the aspect ratio from i.e iPhone 4S because nowadays smartphone is using 16:9 onwards.

                  No possibility of burn in.
                  sRGB % at least 120.
                  Brightness at least 500 nits

                    You left out longevity (i.e. not having to worry about burn in effects). But I guess some manufacturers don't like that to be included.

                      i don't like the edge thing. More added expense. accurately color, sun legibility and cheap expense. The prices phones are getting crazy. :(

It‘s the screen finish (matte, glossy) and brightness. And because LCD is usually brighter, it has the advantage here. That doesn’t mean peak brightness when 1% of the screen is lit, because then OLED can also reach 1000 cd/m2. It‘s when the full screen is lit, and here, OLED usually falls short, even though it is improving. And the standard mode also doesn’t oversaturate on every phone, at least not on my iPhone. On my LG OLED TV, it does, but not by that much.

                                    I'd choose accurate colours (I don't see why contrast is even included as an option, since this covers it) and sunlight legibility. These 2 things are also usually most important in reviews.
