Happy Birthday GSM!
It's good to go down the memory lane and look back actually. And mind you, Nokia is the key developer of the GSM standard.
It really hurts to know that the key company that contributed largely to the GSM standard, the company that did its best to make lives easier, which by the way was the first to make a series of handheld portable phones, is currently struggling (corporate-wise) being made even more disastrous in the hands of that Microsoft Trojan Horse (*cough* STEPHEN ELOP *cough*)!
Sorry to hijack the good vibes in this article but NOKIA, YOU DEFINITELY HAVE TO FIRE STEPHEN ELOP!!!

Please dont tell me that the first call was made by the prime minister Harri Holkeri to call the deputy mayor of Tampere Kaarina Suonio.
Let me let you all into a secret, the first call was made by that network itself, as it wanted to test the nework. B'coz just imagine if the prime minister was given the opportunity to make the call and the call failed, then it would be an embarrassment for the entire phone network and their GSM license would have been withdrawn.
By the way, where was Apple IPhone, I guess they were thinking about manufacturing the Ipod after a decade.
Cheers!!
