Me owning a oneplus 5T i don't really care about these things but one thing i know for sure, the 625 is a really old low performance socket which almost compaires to my old 2013 nexus 5 with the snapdragon 800.

at least a SD660 is needed nowadaysAgreed, but I would say the minimum today should be the QSD 636 (aka Qualcomm Snapdragon 636).
It's basically an underclocked QSD 660, with a cheaper price. The QSD 660 is mighty impressive, being equal (or slightly behind) the previous flagship which is the QSD 820. Which itself was just an underclocked QSD 821. And the QSD 821 and the QSD 835 were quite close in performance, which means by proxy, the mid-range QSD 636 is quite close to the performance of the high-end QSD 835.
I would expect any phone priced below US$150 or €100, to ship with some random MediaTek SoC, just nothing you can do about it at this bargain-base price. Whereas devices priced between US$150-US$250 or €100-€200, you should expect the old QSD 625 SoC, it will deliver everything you want except the performance. Then bumping up to US$250-US$450 or €200-€400, you should demand the QSD 636 (or equivalent) instead. Prices higher than that should net you the QSD 835. Just in case anyone was wondering.
Not only has the naming, features, and pricing has become awful to follow for Snapdragon chipsets lately. The entire upgrade path for SoC's on the Android ecosystem itself has become a nightmare.
Here's the upgrade history of the SoC's in the Android ecosystem:

Only way they sticking with 625 because is cheap chipset with efficiency and performance balance for budget devices is perfect, it is definitely unrealistic to expect 660 in budget device, they could go with 630, but I think performance wise is almost no difference between them

Yes 630 ain... moreNo, its not the SD 630. It is the older 625, given its clockspeed which is 2.0 ghz.
Mediocre CPU, mediocre GPU, limited memory + great battery life. If that works for you, go for it.

If it is 18:9 ratio FHD+ phone then it wont be SD625. It could be SD625 under-clocked form in the name of SD450 or it could be improved SD636 to support the said display units. The latter should be the case as Xiaomi will reserve SD450 for lower mid ends if they prefer 18:9 there to!!

Yes 630 ain't much of an upgrade over 625 but still u get abt 20% faster performance and a 20% faster GPU.

The usage of SD 625 again gives the more reason not to upgrade.. but hey at least they used a SoC which is already proven good enough with no flaws, i.e.who would want an SD820 if SD625 is enough and gives u more battery life? I would recommend a phone with SD625 to friends, families, any day than any other snapdragon SoC
Learn the mistake from the old redmi 1s with the msm8228, mi4i with its SD615, or the original redmi note 4 with its mtk helio x20, which are only good on paper and sounds like upgrade but has bad performace stability

SD 625 SoC and HD+ resolution display is a huge disappointment. It reminds me about the screen of Samsung Galaxy Note 2 from many years ago.

What?? Snapdragon 625 again. Thank you very much Xiaomi. As you know cameras of xiaomi phones lacks quality and detail so all left there is battery and processer and if you use old soc like 625 it's better to wait for Motor G6 plus which will come with FHD+ screen, 630 soc and obviously turbo charging and last but not least good dual cameras.

Only their models with OIS worth and are more expensive. Don't expect anything better than A1 camera which is really bad at night but ok with daylight. I was expecting a better SoC too. Even it seems that they'll maintain the old micro-usb.

Maybe the real chipset in Redmi Note 5 is 626 or 630 or maybe Xiaomi has done some hack around the limitation. Only time can tell...

-Android Jellybean didn't natively support Dual-SIM, but Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 did.
-The LG Q6 has Full HD+ resolution but it runs on Snapdragon 430.
These are just a few examples.

If the spec's are true it will be a yet another performance degradation from generation to generation (as the display actually has more pixels to render RN4 & RN4 whose a huge performance degradation compared to the RN3 on both CPU & GPU front).
