If this wasn't among your *first* thoughts in regard to what I was saying, you have too much money to waste. I mean, it's not Scotland Yard work to put those together - repair is a black hole. It always has been - why the hell would anyone want to pay for it when there's simple, cheap alternatives?

Why couldn't they have made it flat? Or somewhat flatter like Pixel XL 2. Curved edges=no sale. Curved edges really limits how you view content and use the touch screen. Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ biggest flaw. Like reading a shampoo bottle...

Well congrats, man! You convinced me with the line above to buy a case for my phone.
And I'm the guy who started all this sub-topic about "people who use cases on their devices cannot afford said devices".
Indeed you are correct. I'd rather spend money on a vacation or whatever other nice things money can buy rather than to spend it on repairs or replacements.

Carol, 02 Dec 2017Wow, good thinking. But tell me: If you buy electronics wit... moreI have never sold or even thought about selling my old phones. I dont know how you get 2 year contract and dont pay interest over the phone price. 2 years contract that have at least 30 euro per month with everything calls and internet is killer price. I have 10 euro for month with low amount of internet, calls and text messages. It's not the best but and i could get better contract if i would not be that lazy. Budget phones mostly come with screen protection film and with case in this days.
If i cant buy out my device on day one then i dont need that device and it's simple as that. If you need brains to understand this then wait for few decades i am sure they can print you a new brain by then.
If you talk about my logic then i would like to understand your logic. As your bashing me around only by looking down on me. Not once you have explained anything. You cant explain why flagship phones are more reliable and so forth. You will never buy under 300 dollar phone you call a boat (what ever that means) but know always that this will be a bad device that wont get support and security updates. Thing is that if you have no experience then how can you say you know everything ?
I have not jet seen you talk anything more then nonsense. You talk only that budget phones are so bad that they are not worth the talk but you never say whats so different about them with flagships. I in the other hand have had over 5 different budget phones and they have lasted me as long as any Nokia have for me. I am not clumsy and i have never used a case on my phones. This last budget phone i bought had it with it so i use it but i would of not bought it separately.
Having a loan is same thing as when you buy with a leash or 2 year contract. You dont get the phone cheaper as these ISP's are not dumb you know. They know exactly how to fish you in and keep you in. And well in here we can get better insurance for our devices and not from where we get the contract for calls and internet. We have home insurance that will cover these devices to and it cost a lot less then we could get with the contract we do.
I have a contract but thats not closed like these 2 years contracts are that have locked phones with the company that you made the contract with. I have unlocked phones always and if i need then it's easier to resell them to someone then with locked phone.
As every phone company is using slavery from Asian countries then you cant say that budget phones have them more then big companies like Samsung , Sony, LG and so on. They all do there devices in there for the reason to hold cost down as minimal as possible so they can get as much profit as possible. That should be something that everyone understand even not people who know nothing about business like me.
I will always buy budget phone over used phone that is 2-3 years old and wont have any support anymore and no guarantee or anything.

AnonD-674280, 30 Nov 2017I bought my phone for 90 euro and it come with a case in th... moreWow, good thinking. But tell me: If you buy electronics with cash down, will they last longer? Better, will they worth more after two years? This days people can buy a lot of devices without one single cent as added interest. So, if one moves to new haus he can actually buy all the devices need in one Hause, plus entertainment ones, all at once without emptying their bank account and go to minus. So please enlighten us with your "wisdom"!
Now lets talk about phones. I am a person that needs a contract, and i am not the only one. Without it, i pay way more for a prepaid sim. Now, we do not talk about your, and the other hier, logics, cause by them, people should waste 3 times the money per month, buying credit. I am talking about people that actually use that thing in their head called brain. Anyway with contracts this days, people must be out of their minds to go for prepaid, but is not my business. Turning back to me (and other "dumb" people like me), if i deal a contract, and that is every 2 years, i for damn sure won't buy a 90 euros boat phone. Nor will i take a 300 euros one. So,yes, i will get a flagship, hustle free performance and a case to make it last for 2 years at least. After that, it goes to my mother and she will probably use it again for 2 years, without destroying it, cause it is in a case. For her is still very high end tech, and after four years i sell it in great shape, even if for a small amount, it is not about the money, it is about the principles that i, as a mature figure hold on to.
Now please stop wasting peoples time with your subpar comparisons with no logic whatsoever that mostly run around of a single person, you! This one is for all here that keep talking nonsense. Their are actually a hack lot of people on this earth, and they live in different countries, with different situations and have different or no principles. But Your mentality works only for people that do not know how to count. Yes, i like phones without case, that is why i will never buy tank cases and that is why i buy phones like nokia. They actually last, and last and last. But that does not mean i am willing to deal with cheap performance, support slavery by buying boat made devices and waste time and money everytime i drop one on the concrete. I am actually not a clumsy person, but boy did my phones fly and got saved just by a small crapp wrapped around them.

Anonymous, 01 Dec 2017And just as I was saying: if you want to protect consumable... moreIt's perspective.
Cases look fine. Honestly, one of the things I look forward to getting - I've got some really nice shoops for them.
I understand why a person would opt for a naked device, but it's stupid to say that a person doesn't just because they "can't afford it".
Couches aren't easily destroyed. You keep bringing up bad comparisons. I see so many people with shattered screens on their $1000 samsungs... how's that working out for "beautiful design?"
As for polycarbonate, you don't get top tier specs with those.
If there's a realistic chance of it breaking and phones definitely do that, one is making a sensible choice to put a case on it.
As I've said, since you keep bringing money into this: I can afford to replace my phone several times over. I still use a case, because I have dropped them before and now one of mine has an ugly score in the aluminium. I'm careful, but simply put accidents happen.
Again, how's that for showing off it's sexy design?
Ill be frank: knowing that I've dropped and damaged phones before, I put a case on. I do that because to me, knowing what I know, taking an obvious and predictable risk of damaging them that would mean throwing away money is blatantly retarded.
Can I afford to fix it? Sure. But... why the hell would I? Again, there simply is not a compelling argument in aesthetics (which, honestly, few phones have anyway) that justifies throwing away money.
You're entitled to argue you'd prefer naked, and that's fine. But you have no right to keep representing a sensible, logical choice as some sort of denigration exclusive to plebs.
I don't **want** to spend money on repairs. It's a black hole I get nothing for. I prefer to keep my things nice, because people buy nice things (one reason I can usually sell multi-year old devices for close to 85% of their buying price) and because I'd very much rather that $300 I put into a repair instead go to a new device.
I'm thrifty, and to me the vanity > pay for repair thing just makes literally no sense. A phone isn't a work of art to be admired, anyway. The only people looking are the thieves. Otherwise it's a tool, and one that is a screen with a computer behind it.
Anyway, all that aside: you should stop representing it as thing for poor people. It's a sensible choice, and tbh, saying that "protecting your investment" is a sign of spending outside your means, which suggests you feel it's only sensible as necessity is just unfathomably stupid.
All it says to me is: so you enjoy pissing money away?
Wealth or non, I can think of far better uses for it than the black hole of repair. Like maybe a contribution toward next year's flagship. You wouldn't want to be laughed out of the masquerade for having last years' model, surely?

Jimbob, 01 Dec 2017I'm not in it to be nice, particularly when people start ou... moreAnd just as I was saying: if you want to protect consumables (they are consumables as they wear out and become outdated in a matter of years) then you either can't afford said consumable OR you don't care about getting something that looks nice and you only care about having an operating system displayed on a screen - so then why buy something expensive where you pay for the design and the aesthetics of the device instead of getting good hardware in a durable frame with durable materials? Logic right there
If you don't care about the device's design and are more focused on having you phone last for a long time, then why not get a plastic/polycarbonate phone so you don't have to care about the glass/metal back & frame getting cracked or scratched or whatever?
Just the same as with an expensive, new couch. They cost a lot of money and are prone to getting stained by spills, dirt, food, etc. But I trust you don't cover your couch in plastic. If you do so, then you can't really afford that couch. You would be better off with a cheaper one where you don't get the urge to wrap it in plastic.
Cars are prone to getting dents and scratches on their metal bodies, don't they? And windshields easily crack when small pebbles end up hitting them. But you don't bubblewrap your car to protect it from these things, do you? You just accept that it's a consumable and you just use it as it is.
Phone cases and expensive phones just don't mix. They cover up the phone's design, materials and aesthetics in an ugly way. So glass back? Doesn't matter. Metal back? Doesn't matter. As these will just be covered up by some cheap layer of plastic/silicone.

Jaymech, 30 Nov 2017Such a nice reply. I'm not in it to be nice, particularly when people start out the gates with being patronizing and calling people poor for making a sensible choice.
It'd be fine if they said they simply didn't agree with it, but they're making out like they're better for it and it's just the plebs who are stupid and overspend their money interested in protecting something.
I worked retail for years - if it has taught me anything, it's to hate conspicuous capitalism. Saying you'd throw money away just because you have a fair amount is not admirable, it's stupidity. Trying to insult people for their choice not to do the same is what pissed me off.
People are free to put a case on or not - but just because they want to protect something they've spent a solid portion of money on - and not piss away money on repairs that simply don't have to happen, they should not be insulted or talked down to. Further, along with the wealth arrogance, they're just being generally arrogant by assuming people just toss this stuff around for the fun of it.
Another fun thing I learned working retail as long as I have: accidents don't care how wealthy you are. It's a sensible choice for anyone to make, and insulting people for it is wrong, particularly on the metrics they're trying to do so.

Anonymous, 30 Nov 2017You are speaking from your own perspective, as in based on ... moreI bought my phone for 90 euro and it come with a case in the box. I have never used case for my phones cause it makes the already big phone more bigger and heavier.
With my last phone Nokia Lumia 830 i wanted to buy a case for it but didnt find any that was nice for my taste and well i could buy it only from ebay or amazon cause in local shops or some neighbor countries market shops didnt have even one case for lumia 830.
Phones like Xiaomi redmi 4x and note 4 needed a case cause there made out of slippery materials. One guy in my local forums dropped 2 phones in one week of these xiaomi redmi 4x.
If my phone would of come without case i would of not care about it and would not even try to search a case for it.
And i didnt buy 90 euro phone cause i am poor or something. I just dont see the point to waste over 300€$ on a phone. For making phone calls mostly and use google map once in a month or so. 90 Euro phone does everything what i need so whats the point to pay more for it. I have never bought anything with contract. I will never buy anything with a leash. With a leash only things that i could buy are apartment/house or a car. But phones and other electronics it's stup!d to buy with a leash for a year two or even a 3 years cause when your payment is over there device price in that time is already so low that you either throw it away or it stays to collect dust in your drawer.

Anonymous, 30 Nov 2017You are speaking from your own perspective, as in based on ... moreEverything gets a case. If I'm willing to buy it, it means I intend to make good use of it. I don't bother with $50 phones because they're inherently cheap crap, but even my little Moto E 2nd gen I got flat out on my carrier's tab for $120 gets a case and a screen protector. $4, keeps it good for a long time. Admittedly, I don't have a case on my ZTE Grand X4, but I keep that in a drawer almost always, so it's kind of meh.
If it were say, 20% of value, I could understand the economics of not bothering. But that's reducing the problem here - we're not talking about absolutely bottom barrel phones that likely wouldn't last much longer than it takes a person to drop it.
What I primarily take issue with is the way you people talk down to those who use cases to protect their things. That's not cool.
As I've said, I buy inexpensive chinese phones, I could easily replace them 5 or 6 times over if that's what was required. However, there is simply no logic whatsoever in doing that vs. just keeping the one I bought nice. It's throwing away money.
All people bragging about not using a case are doing is trying to flaunt conspicuous capitalism as some sort of prestige, but when your argument comes down to "I can afford plenty if this breaks, therefore let it break" that's just idiotic. $3 or $300. I can't think of something more obvious.
The trouble is while you're entitled to make your choices, looking down on people for it as being "poor" is just not cool. Wanting to put a case on something to protect it for 1% of its price vs a substantive risk of damage == throwing the money away, is sensible. It's not limited to wealth and people using them aren't spending outside their means, they just don't want to piss away their lifeblood fixing/replacing something for vanity.
Maybe $300 means less to an engineer than a pleb, but it's still $300. I would consider that vanity =/= risking $300 repairs. Acting like it means nothing to throw that money away doesn't impress, and definitely doesn't justify the person talking down to others as "spending outside their means".

realist, 29 Nov 2017agreed... cases are for the poorNo, they're for smart people.
Having worked electronics for quite some time, I know how accident prone EVERYONE is, and more to the point, I know that I have no respect for people who think this way.
It's humble-bragging about wealth, and even then it's just abjectly stupid. $3M or $300, when you come to me and say "I'll just buy a new one if I break it" when a $3 case would have protected it - you're not smart, you're not someone I respect. You're some idiot who just threw away $300 for no good reason.
I like naked phones, but the simple fact is that I'm barely willing to pay out $300 for a phone to last 2 years. For $1000, I damn well better get a phone that lasts me 4 or 5. That's just a matter of principle - poor or not, $1000 is factually a solid sum of money, and I expect to get something for it.
So yea, it's fine if you want to use your phone naked, but don't act like it's somehow superior or it's related to wealth. Some of us just have sensibilities that dictate we don't piss our money away for literally no good reason at all.
Doesn't matter if you're Bill Gates or Homeless. If you throw your money away and treat the goods it buys as expendable to the point you don't mind exposing them to stupid accidents, you are not respectable, you're just a moron.

Wow. How's this for bad for money management:
1. Wreck $300 naked phone
2. Pay $3 and get a case. Keep phone good until its innards die.
You'd have to be an idiot of incredible caliber to think that the first is an efficient, ergo, suitable for money-managing, tactic.
I buy a $270 phone and put a $3 case on it because while I could replace it 5x over, nobody is impressed by someone being willing to throw away $300 and act like it's not a problem. It's stupid. Why would anyone just volunteer to throw money away?
It's the people with contempt for protecting their devices who have no money-management skills and are over spending.
