ZloiYuri, 01 Dec 2017Nokia begore Microsoft used similar to simplified wavelet n... moreYou keep calling me uneducated while you struggle to even form an argument or spell things. How do wavelets even factor into this? Please explain, if you think this is the case.

Nokia used adaptive oversampling to shrink down high-resolution images into 5 MP images optimised for detail in low-ISO situations and noise in high-ISO situations. That last thing is pretty much what we're seeing from OnePlus now.

Matt99, 01 Dec 2017Just like "pureview" on the old Nokia's then, there may be ... moreThe Nokia Pureview idea doesn't do a mishmash of up and downscaling, just downscaling from a large MP-sensor. For low light photography Nokia uses/used a true Xenon blitz instead of tiny LED-lamps. IMHO for still photography the 808PV still reigns supreme.

Those newer phones does do fantastic close-ups (the Achilles heel of the 808PV). And they focus much faster too. But then again the 808 is 2012-tech.

Anyway, you can as well use a regular 16MP or 20MP sensor and downscale that image to a sensible 4MP or 5MP photo yourself using Photoshop/GIMP/paintshop or even Paint. It'll be as noiseless as this one and it works with every image from every phone.

Which is bad... very bad. Keep the image at 5MP. In fact this whole idea is stupid. Why not do what Nokia did put a large MP-sensor in it and THEN downsample.

But this is ridiculous, first downsampling and then upscalin... DUUUH!
Who's crazy idea was that? What idiots work at Oneplus?

Indeed why is there even a secondary camera on this phone. But then I question that on every phone. I can understand that some manufacturers would go for a wide-angle or zoom-lens on the 2nd camera. I'm even willing to accept the idea of a B/W sensor giving one stop more light (though I do question if this is really meaningful on a "phone"). But is the most stupid implementation of a 2nd camera.

Oneplus you are ridiculing yourself as a smart manufacturer with sensible ideas!

I'm agree. I've seen it success before too. If you can achieve it cheaply too for a manufacturer is even cheaper. The hard work is the software and make it work properly. But for them shouldn't be a problem. So no excuse to not include cameras with OIS relative to the increase in cost. The OP 3 and the Mi 6 are cheaper with OIS, even you can find some model with OIS at half or third part of the OP 5T price.

One of my next projects as a telefomunications engineer is replace the camera of a cheaper model with one with OIS compatible of the same brand and make it works perfectly as I just seen before, but by myself. WOW what expensive an original replacement could be from a third source provider...

But why not always use the 20MP one...?
It can produce images with much more details in daylight than the 16MP one.
And not only that, at night it could just switch to "night mode" or whatever and do the 5MP thing.

I really don't understand the point of the primary 16MP camera.

Still it sucks. So much for the hype and the flagship killer hopes.
Still, my Lumia 950 beats every smartphone, at least for stills. A 2015 phone that is. Lags in autofocus in video department.

A main camera with OIS and a secondary with wide angle or even monochrome would have been a lot better option and more useful. The result of OP 5T photos is not enough good to sacrifice a more useful second camera and is only used in few ocasions or scenarios. I see this more a economical decision to share cameras and software with OPPO and save time in development than anything else.

Larger sensor(large pixel) can capture wider DR, higher SNR, more sensitive to light, etc
While pixel binning will render more accurate colour on pixel level, significantly less noise, higher detail per pixel but its huge problem is resolution drop(in camera, this is replace by pixel shift)
