I like how they avoided the long lens which I don't think is truly valuable. Most people can get by with digital zoom and I don't need one, resorting to digital zoom because I found that my S8's camera has strong noise reduction. There is a difference between digital zooming versus doing a crop after taking the image, the digital zoomed in image is sharper.
Yet, I find it truly dumb for them enlarging a pixel binned capture image back to 20MP. I also don't think this pixel binning feature is superior to a large camera sensor such as found in the S7/8 or Google Pixels.

Then its the one of technique to get brighter photos with sacrificing pixels. I know we can buy The best phones with better camera but its more expensive and we will need to wait recent camera phone in future for example, Lumia 1020 still has great camera even its older phone in 2017. Sorry for my english.

I’ve pretty much heard about that sampling. One company, once upon a time, in 2012, has done a sampled pixel that came from 7 pixels in to 1 pixel. They called it PureView. Available with up to 6 times lossless zoon in 3MP. And able to get outstanding picture in 8mp with such a low file size. And that company is Nokia.
Bring us back PureView!!!!!!!!

This seems more useless than the monochrome sensor found in other phones (and that too is pretty gimmicky). Why not just have a single lens that does it better with larger pixels, sensors or apertures?

Why not take the detail from the main camera and combine with the noiseless textures from the secondary one?

So essentially they use the Nokia oversampling method, and then upscale the image again? I'm not sure why they didn't just leave that option for the primary sensor. Seems like a monochrome sensor would have been better for low-light photography anyway.

I'd rather have OIS and telephoto. OIS is great especially in video and telephoto is great when you want to get closer or for portrait shots. Such a shame, it could be a perfect phone...

Lg's wide angle is the best dual camera implementation, second is probably this OnePlus 5t.
Those telephoto and b&w(probably even the OnePlus 5t) are really dumb and useless.

a shame, if the only the main was a 20MP OIS 1.7 aperture and the secondary a 16MP telephoto lens it would be the most amazing smartphone ever.
A shame oneplus opted for a 16MP main and 20MP secondary, it makes no sense.
Low light shots are marginally better in terms of noise but it loses dramatically in terms of crispness which is normal. In the end it's a 5MP picture -.-
Should have sticked to my oneplus 5...

it is just a phone camera it is not a spaceship!
you can just simply keep the nice aperture with large pixel size with a telephoto or wide angle lens!

While I can perfectly understand why they combine 4 pixels into one to create a better image, I do not get why they upscale the image back .
The details are still lost !
Wouldn't the 5 megapixel image look more natural ? (like on old nokia)

Telephoto was much better IMO, This is basically useless to me D:
