Foxtrot2Novmbr, 05 Dec 2017Rumors of what? Those 512GB models were released.Nope, they were just rumors and didn't turn out to be true

AnonD-696746, 05 Dec 2017you do not need more ram to use more storage. Sorry but yo... moreI'm laughing at your own foolish comment! First things first. You are using a window. And not an android. Second, you are basing your experience on a CISC instruction, which is the computer. Wherein mobile smartphone device uses RISC instruction set. So in terms of ram usage. Where is your basis that android only requires 3 to 4GB of ram to manage 512GB of internal storage? Even the 2017's 256GB android smartphones has 8GB's of RAM! Third, This years majority of android device now has 3 - 4GB of ram to manage the 64GB internal storage. Meanwhile, for the higher storage level like the 128GB uses 6GB of ram. And so forth. On the other side of the mobile OS. Only IOS has manage to utilize and optimize their smartphones to use only 3GB's of ram to manage 256GB of internal storage. While the biggest one such as the ipad pro 2017 model has 4GB's of ram and can handle 512GB of internal storage space. By 2018. I won't be surprised that apple is gonna released a new ipad with 1TB of internal storage but only uses 6GB of ram. So the question for this one. Have you seen an android device that only has 3 - 4 GB of ram and manage to run a single 512GB of pure raw storage space?

      Cloud storage.

Local storage is so 2010. Who needs all their photos and videos to be ready available on their phones when they are offline? I mean... Where is the last time YOU went offline and needed to see 'those photos' and 'those vids' from a couple years ago? You can just see them when you get back online.

That's the deal: shoot it, save it, upload it to the cloud (and PC/laptop if you want to), and delete it from your device. Why would you need to see ALL photos you took over the past years each time you open the photos app on your phone? You know all those photos and thumbnails and stuff will only slow the app (and your phone) down, don't you?

Point is if you go offline for some time, you will definitely not need your photos and vids for that time.

Then come the apps - you install a few dosen online apps. These will take up maybe 2-3GB of your storage.
You will also install some offline apps like photo/video/sound editors and content creation tools. Another 2GB maybe.
Then some games. Maybe a couple of big titles like 3-4 GB each (6-8 GB total) and another 4-5 small and medium games, between 300MB - 1.5GB (totalling maybe 5GB). And this is considering some people play only a few games, while most of the others hardly play any games at all.
Then you throw in some music - another 5 GB maybe.

So all in all, if you are a gamer, an audiophile, and a content creator, you will need 20-23 GB of storage to have it all. And you will be left with another 10 GB for photos and 4k videos to shoot.
If you barely play any games on your phone and you have just one or two titles installed, or maybe no games at all, then you will need 9-10 GB of storage for all your apps and stuff.

So a 16 GB phone is more than enough if you don't play games, and 32 GB leaves you with enough free storage space even if you play a lot of games.
      - That is if you upload your stuff to the cloud (and/or PC or laptop), thus not being a hoarder.

      P.S.
      No one likes hoarders.

Definitely an absolute excellent news. 100% well done to Samsung and undoubtedly keep it up (with an eye to the S9, onwards).

Great for a 100 eur i can use my external 4TB harddisk.
In phone a 512 GB disk space have same use like a laser sight on a slinger.
And for streaming an unnaturaly huge amount of data i will definitely not use a phone.

geordie81, 05 Dec 2017to be honest mate, supply has always been behind demand in ... moreThat's not necessarily true. Back then, the tech improvements brought us useful things: mp3 files, 640x480 and then HD and FullHD videos, better cameras, better games... But today there is nothing useful that would justify the higher storate space. There is absolutely no need for 4k videos. HD and FullHD videos are perfectly enough to have a perfect and sharp video quality when watched on a monitor/T V. The lossless music is also useless, because you won't hear the difference compared to a 320kbps .mp3. The games already have console graphic and GBs of data for many years. Those "endless apps that people are using" are just bloatwares preinstalled on phones. So 64GB internal storage + 32GB microSD card is perfectly enough.

Of course people saying who need a storage. I'm fine with 16gb.
Good for. Then go buy a $100 16gb phone or a feature phone instead and enjoy and stop trying to hold everyone else back from technology advancements and useable storage amounts.

AnonD-39937, 05 Dec 2017What the heck? Who uses a Phone to record 21h of 4K video?!... moreTaking 4K video futureproofs it. Probably all televisions within 5-10 years will be 4K and if you ever take video of family, vacation, etc, it will be well worth it. Imagine viewing a vacation video in 15 years and what sort of quality you would have wanted. The current phones, even the super-premium ones, aren't that good with 4K yet but new phones over the next few years should be ok.

Same thing with audio recording, which mostly sucks now but hopefully will improve over the next few years.

Now games require you to have a 1TB SSD for the important stuff, and a second 4TB HDD for the assets (large textures, etc etc).

I can't see phones going the same route. However it is going to happen, even though I cannot see it happening, that's the industry of today (if you can't make improvements, make bigger spec numbers).

You would be considered as average user. Power user need this. It is very neccessary for those that likes to download FHD or 4k movies, receive and download docs/pdf files almost every day for work purposes. Some professions require them to open email and download big files. The biggest advantage of having 512gb storage is that you dont need a hard disk to be carried around. All your pc data can be transfered into your phone. People dont use smartphone just as phone anymore, this is our portable computer.
