For Microsoft, it's leverage.
I don't know how OS developers work with OEMs but one scenario will be: Microsoft will accept a lower than $15 royalty in exchange for more WP7 phone releases by Samsung. Or Samsung could completely dropped production of WP7 and pay the $15 royalty, but I don't think that will be a sound decision in case Nokia WP7 phones turn out to be a hit.
It's a win scenario for Microsoft, but not so for Samsung where WP7 phone sales isn't performing as it should have been. Just my two cents. :-)

the reason ms sues against samsung and other manufacturers is simple.When these manufacturers sign a contract with ms to sell better a number of phone by year with his OS, when the goal is not reached all these manufacturers must pay royalties on all other products who sell better with another os. So ms let customer thinks, these manufacturers are using their own patents because products with his os can sell well. these manufacturer must break their contracts with ms. The reason I will call ms a devil company

I use to have the HD2 with windows mobile 6.5 so I am in no way anti microsoft but I hate all these legal crap. Even if you start creating a new mobile phone OS from the ground up, you will definitely tread on someone's IP which is wrong as how much differentiation can you do between one phone to another?
Enough ranting, never again would I purchase windows mobile 6.5 or window mobile 7. My prediction is their marketshare will even get less because of this.
MS-concentrate on innovation rather than the patent route.

Did N97 really had multiple home screens? You are confusing me... mine doesn't have such a thing... limited to 1 home screen, there was on option to hide the single homescreen. It may appear to have multiple homescreens for that, but it hasn't.
Even when you enter the menu option it is just one big pan with vertical scroll not multiple pages as in android.

The N97 had multiple homescreens before the G1 but everybody seems to forget that part. Anyway, enough with defending Nokia, I knew Microsoft were getting paid for every Android device made but I never knew that news would ever hit mainstream airwaves. This is indeed interesting and I think I know why Microsoft are now being vocal about it but I'll keep quiet and see how things unfold. It'd be interesting if things go as I'm thinking they will.

So, they have the patents if they acquires the inventors.

Nokia could make an launcher for android, that would use QT. YOu cant download sense, touchwiz, so you see, that would be very possible. Launchers dont have to be open source.
