Next-year Snapdragon 670, 640 and 460 specs leak

28 December 2017
The SD670 and SD640 will be built on the 10nm fabrication process just like the SD830 is.

Great, great, great, 14nm and 10 process chips that means that we are really going to have good battery efficient phones. Am happy to hear this. We will surely have Samsung and Xiaomi phones and few other phones we 2 days of heavy use batteries. I want three days of heavy use. I trust Xiaomi can give that.

Right now, there isn't even a single phone with SD 636. The SD 640 would be a good choice for the sequels of Moto X4, HTC u11 Life, and even Nokia 7. But I could already tell that if that happens, their OEMs will most likely follow Samsung with its A 2018 series and overprice them too.

Going by how few SD660 and SD450 devices there are in the market right now, we won't be seeing SD670 and SD460 devices any time soon.

I'll be impressed by a mobile SOC when it comes close to the Apple A series in terms of performance on benchmarks.

Enthusiasts get you unique devices like the Moto Droid, Nexus One, Samsung Note, Meizu MX3, OnePlus One, Alcatel Idol 4, Sony Z3c, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, LG G5, Moto Z, Blackberry Priv, ZTE Axon 7, and LG V20.

The (dumb) masses... what they want?
                    - higher hardware prices
                    - frustrating microtransactions/pay to win
                    - laggy user interfaces
                    - no privacy
                    - locked software, without updates/support
                    - weak, thin and curved designs
                    - heavy and fragile glass bodies (but its shiny!)
                    - poor internal construction/serviceability
                    - excess bezels (weird aspect ratios) and intrusive notches
                    - no headphone jacks
                    - non-replaceable batteries
                    - non-removable storage
                    - pointlessly high pixel densities
                    - very quite and dull speakers
                    - less battery life
                    - no FM radios, no IrDa functions
                    - slow charging over wireless
                    - less convenient facial recognition
                    - dumb user interactivity with eye-scrolling or hover tapping

They say "you can't have it all"... but I say, "I don't believe it so". You can build a better product from a long-term hardware, service, support, and software point of view. It doesn't even have to cost more, or intrude your privacy. Sane designers can build a sane device for sane men. Greedy men can build a lousy device for insane men. Vote with your feet/wallet.

Why do Qualcomm even bother designing such a powerful midrange SOC. I am sure SD 670 won't get the recognition it deserve just like SD 660, and OEM will once again shove the overclocked SD 625 from 2 years back known as SD 630 down our throat for $400-500 and we'll gladly swallow it.
Some of Samsung's Mid range phone costs over $500 like the A8 (2018) and comes with SOC like Exynos 7885 which are weak by today's standard when in reality such phone deserves chips like SD 660 at least.
Hopefully consumers will realize this and give some thought to price / performance ratio of a phone as well along with camera, ram and storage when buying a new phone.

Anonym, 29 Dec 2017Price is of the essence. For instance, at the same price I ... moreVery good analysis!

Problem for us customers indeed mainly lies in price point of latest A7x based SOCs in SD6xx range, which is simply set too close to SD8xx range, and which, consequently, instantly negates their expected bang for buck value most of tech savy people are striving for.

Anomaly like Xiaomi RN3, with SD65x in 200$ price bracket, is not gonna happen again unfortunately, and all what will be worth buying in the next period would be kind of bipolar offer at extremes, expensive top tier phones containing A7x cores, and on the other end cheap crappy phones with bunch of A5x "efficient" cores.
The former ones obviously for their performance, and the later ones for their low price.

Middle tier lost its ground when manufacturers realised that their biggest competition comes from their own last years flagships, which is something that well informed buyer knows long time ago.
Overlapping products in same price segment but technologically different, is simply not reasonable to maintain if there aren't some other market forces which can sustain such coexistence (carrier subsidies, etc...)
Prime example is Samsungs A5/A7 series phones, devices priced slightly below their contemporary S series brethren, but often priced more then year before S series, and in the same time technologically inferior in many important ways, equal at best.

In general, as manufacturers are hitting the wall of Moore's law with advances in technology, we are going to see more and more of this artificial market segmentation, something which can be seen for years in desktop CPU market.

So it is much easier for them to make software updates for older devices, whereas, a single android manufacturer releases around 20-50 devices. Not necessarily a good thing, but you get to choose from a large selection of phones based on your budget. Apple only lets you choose flagships devices, except the SE.

I have an iPhone 5s too but I opted not to install iOS 11 because all of my friends' iPhones (6 and 6s) slowed down and have worse battery life. Plus those large header fonts look ugly to me on a 4 inch phone. Apple iOS updates don't bring much changes anyways. It is just a number. Same goes for android starting 5.0 and up. As long as you can still use the apps that you want you'll be fine.
