Next-year Snapdragon 670, 640 and 460 specs leak

28 December 2017

Simon, 29 Dec 2017The 670 and 640 look like the best mid range chips we’ve se... morePrice is of the essence. For instance, at the same price I would even think twice about getting the 845, because I know I could just downclock and make it behave like the 670 where it matters (while still getting more cache, better GPU, better ISP and better memory controller).

This is also probably why we haven't seen the 660 put to much use, pricing must be appealing for it to be viable (and so far it seems that SoC was just too close the the 835 that manufacturers just went that route instead, being the 660 an awkward replacement for the 835 when price was really a key factor that a few dollars would make a difference).

Nice but when? These chips are going to be great on Xiaomi devices!

At the MINIMUM (roughly €200), people should get the QSD 640.
No longer should people depend on the slow QSD 625 or the inefficient QSD 650.
The step down to the QSD 636 actually improves performance, hence, it will actually be priced higher. However at this price bracket, the cost is more important (cheaper by €30) and that performance isn't really expected. However the QSD 640 improves on efficiency at least. This low-point should finally put the QSD 805 (and the awful 808 and 810 chips) to the grave.

The MIDDLE-GROUND (roughly €350), people should get the QSD 660.
Again, people shouldn't depend on the inefficient QSD 653 or the more expensive QSD 835.
It's definitely a decent step-up from the QSD 640. The QSD 670 improves over the QSD 660, but not in a major way. It's roughly 30% faster architecture, but clocked 20% lower, and has a slightly more efficient lithography from the 14nm+ build to the standard 10nm wafer. However, the total effect to efficiency at this performance level isn't much to write home. I think the QSD 660 is the better value, because it offers mostly the same product at the lower price (if the QSD 670 is priced €60 or more).

And at the HIGH-END (roughly €500), people should get the QSD 845.
Sure enough, you can make the point the QSD 835 is cheaper (maybe €80 cheaper)... but honestly, if you are looking for cheaper its better to step down and instead get the QSD 660. The QSD 845 is more expensive, but its definitely at a level of acceptable expectations.

However, phones priced under €150... and you should expect some random MediaTek Soc. The price is too low to do anything about it. Hence, the old QSD 4xx series is pointless. Even the lower-level QSD 6xx chips are pointless. Whereas the great chipsets from Qualcomm such as the QSD 820, QSD 821, and QSD 835 are no longer relevant.

...there's no way around it, 2015 was the worst year from Qualcomm's offering.
And 2017 was their best, thanks to Samsung's better yield wafers and a great portfolio of chipsets to cover the low-end, mid-range, and flagship devices/prices.

The 670 and 640 look like the best mid range chips we’ve seen in a very long time, perhaps ever. The 670is essentially a more sane and balanced 845! I would get it instead of the 845 any day. Same process, much more reasonable clocks, better energy efficiency.

Series 4xx are the most useless chip from Qualcomm. Qualcomm should kill them.

All great but delivery will be zero.Only the Moto x5 might have sd640 while some unknown China phone will get the 670 and 460.
The brand OEM are fools and don't understand customers,I mean the Moto x5 should have at least the sd670 when Moto z gets sd845 also Moto g getting the sd460 or 640.
No hope for Samsung,Sony,lg,htc and Nokia in the midrange because even their $300-$500 phones will not be getting anything like a sd640.

I wish 1 OEM would structure their range like this:
Flagship = current new releases 8xx series

                                Sub-Flagship (Samsung A series/Sony lower xz model) = last year's 8xx series

                                Upper Mid-Ranger = ⬆ 6xx latest

                                Sub-Upper Mid-Ranger = ⬆ 6xx last years

                                Mid Ranger = ⬇ 6xx latest

                                Sub-Mid-Ranger = 6xx last years

                                Lower Range = 4xx current

Entry level = 4xx last years model

I am an Iphone 5S user and currently i am on IOS 11.2.5 and i have zero lags because i did a clean installation and my battery is just fine. And you can't expect a 4 year old device like Iphone 5S to run IOS 11 like Iphone 8/ X. It is good for normal use and its just a 1GB ram/dual core phone . How many 4 year old former android flagships have latest OS's?(Oreo).
