Apple A5 chip overheating might be delaying the iPhone 5 launch

15 July, 2011
Here we have another interesting theory on what might be preventing Apple from releasing the next iPhone yet. The latest bit of online gossip has it that the problem lies within the dual-core Apple A5 chip..

Tom, 16 Jul 2011Then why do you think Apple didnt bring out new iPhone in J... moreYeah right, it is about Verizon, why they dont launch an iPhone 5. BECAUSE OF 1 CARRIER IN THE WHOLE WORLD. Only an American could think only in its own borders. Of course it is better to release a phone with specs, that are already outdated by the time of the release. Makes total sense to me, doesnt it?

Unbiased Observer, 16 Jul 2011Judging by what I see here its quite clear the Android fana... moreYou know, the price of a certain product comes from its production cost and the later customer support. Production cost mainly comes from 2 things. 1.Specs you put into the phone & 2.If you have bad assembly lines you have to make more complex productions to get a certain product. So please tell me, how can somebody choose an iPhone, if it is because of fitting your desires, I still cant get why somebody would buy an iPhone, only if your desire is to get ripped off of course ;) Android is able to do anything iOS can do for half the price and even if you dont buy because of specs, specs is what makes a phone expensive, but not on the iPhone, there you pay a lot for the name.

Here in Germany is an advertise for an iPhone, where they sell it by calling an iPhone an iPhone, not more... They are good at advertising by showing features in that advertise like Videocalling, which is really funny, because it is new to me, that only an iPhone can do Videocalls, but they act in that advertise, like they are the only ones and that is what makes people think, they have something special, they have an iPhone, they want an iPhone and they dont even try to see, if there might be a different phone, which can do the same. And that is the way Apple traps its buyers. Nobody who paid that much money for such a weak device would admit to have thrown away that much money, so it is much easier to become a total brainless Applefanboy, where the community is big enough and they feed each other with nonsense about the iPhone, so it works like a painkiller for the users. So stop talking about somebody bought an iPhone because it is better, people buy it, so they can say they own an iPhone, not more and the ones who really laugh at iPhone buyers, is Apple itself.

Laurynas, 16 Jul 2011@theaffidavit Actually you are wrong! :) First of all... more*Smartassface turned on*

Acutally A5 and Exynos are Chipsets using the same CPU (ARM Cortex A9). To say they are SoCs is wrong, because there are no full SoCs out yet and by the way, the A5 chipset is probably the only thing Apple really did theirselves ;) Now you Applebees... come out and say A5 is best, because it is Apple original ^^ Would be really Applefanboy like. Not even one true argument, but being stubborn like a little child. iPhone only sells because of the one thing Apple really can do well and that is marketing, but marketing aint something, that is actually good for the consumer himself. But Applefans are right, they buy Apple products, so the Company can make money, not because they are interested in a good working phone for less money.

Fact of the matter is I did try an Android switch recently to the Samsung Galaxy S2. This was after hours of use on friends Android devices. I thought I'd give Android a chance. And hell was I disappointed! The SGS2 is nothing but a overpowered phone with glitches. Android itself is a fantastic OS and yes I like it. But not as much as the more polished iOS.

Judging by what I see here its quite clear the Android fanatics have no idea why consumers buy the iPhone. I know a multitude of iPhone users and NONE of them said "hey i got this because its cool". They all state different reasons: greater app selection, easy to use, syncs with itunes, airplay, jailbroken functions, camera, etc etc. However on the flip side I have hear Android users state reasons why they got them which include: it was free, it has a big screen, good camera. The only place I hear "Apple cool-aid" and "Apple restrictions" and "Android freedom" is HERE or in similar forums... places that the mass bulk of consumers do not ever go to and voice there opinions. Since all of us are here and commenting about different phone topics I really don't think too many of us are in touch with the average consumer and why they buy a certain brand over another... UNLESS we have been able to take a look beyond ourselves and our own personal reasons for getting a phone (hint to you techies) and realize why the average person buys one. This is not an insult, but imagine if the only people asked to rate new cars were NASCAR drivers. You'd not get a clear and broad rating from a wide spectrum of demographics on which cars are actually better for the consumer. And the cars that the NASCAR drivers picked would not be what the average consumer buys. So when I come in here I keep in the back of my head what my fellow "average" friends say about why they bought certain phones and apply it to the tech stuff I see here. Most of the time what I see in comments and even in a few reviews is far from what is going on out there. Most consumers are not ever concerned about specs. Ask the average Android user "what are the specs of your phone?" They'd look at you and say "Huh????" Same with an iPhone user. Same with a dumb-phone user. As long as it works for what they need or fits a certain budget - that is why they buy it. Its not at all because "it has a dual core processor and can fly to the moon".

Just my thoughts. Bash away if you want to.

It is all about launching on Verizon. Look they didnt want the Verizon iPhone to be outdated in just 3 months and this is why they are delaying iPhone 5 to give Verizon enough time to sell their version of iPhone. Otherwise nobody would have purchased CDMA iPhone 4.

First of all A5 is not a CPU, it is SoC (system-on-a-chip). Second, A5 doesn't belong to Samsung, Samsung is only manufacturer of it, but not a designer of it.

Samsung Galaxy S II (i9100) use Exynos 4210 (a.k.a. Orion) SoC, Apple iPhone 5 will use A5 SoC and it is two different SoCs.

For one thing it's popular so that's one part it wins. But other things such as battery life, field of view, durability, price, etc etc... There are other alternatives which excels in these areas.
