only the true owners of the note8 can appreciate everything that it offers that simply no other phone can. every other opinion out there from people otherwise is insignificant. so the bitter haters can rant all they want. they don't matter to anyone anyway.

To be honest, I don't think there were any great phones this year.
Sure, the S8 and family feel great the first day you get it... it gets old fast.
Why? Because that glass front and back attracts so much fingerprints its annoying. And the device isn't nice to hold because its too slippery, especially when pulling it out of your pocket and trying to unlock at the same time. And the fact that the majority of Apps, Videos, and even footage taken on the phone doesn't scale properly on the screen is despicable.

Now, the iPhone X is a good device. I'm not saying its better, but a lot of fanboys hate it.
If you had to use one for a while, you'll realise it gets a lot of things right. However, I will easily say its not a great phone simply because of its price... which is much higher in countries outside of the US.

So what about Pixel 2? Well, it loses major points for releasing too late in the game. On top of this, the Pixel 2 has big bezels, a fragile (and ugly) design, and a ridiculous asking price. The Pixel 2XL also has a fragile (and ugly) design, a more ridiculous asking price, and has even bigger bezels due to letterboxing... so its actually worse. On top of that, they're plagued with many QC issues, I just cannot recommend them.

LG G6 was a great device IF you bought it in the first half of the year at the heavily discounted price. It's since gone up in price, and I cannot recommend it now. The LG V30 would definitely win this category, having competitive hardware, specs, and price. Though had it not been for the batches of QC issues its suffered (and still suffering), so it also is not a great phone.

The Sony devices have too much bezel, and have poor/no fingerprint scanners. It practically concedes the fight. Let's hope they'll do better in round 2. One of my favourite devices was the SONY Z3 Compact.

The OnePlus devices are more expensive than ever before, and they waste this expense on that second-camera which doesn't even take good photos. They should've instead stuck to a single camera like the HTC U11, and instead added a second speaker like Sony, and more importantly added IP68 ingress protection.

Now I turn to Xiaomi. This year would have been a steal for them, because they stuck to their guns to offer their device at its highly competitive price and include a great chipset. However, the reason they didn't steal the show, and failed to make a truly great device, is because they folded on several fronts. They didn't design it with the consumer friendly IP68 ingress protection. They removed the microSD slot. They removed the headphone jack. And added a useless/wasterful second-camera. Overall, it relegated to another "me too" device following the steps of Apple and Samsung.

....with that all said and done, this year we did see some interesting devices but nothing that's an improvement over last years from a practicality and consumer-friendly viewpoint. Now, if you were to pull my chains and force me to pick a winner, that would go to the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus (with a protective case).

              Why?
It's not the fact that it does a lot of things right, but rather it doesn't do many wrongs.
Early release, check. IP68, check. Headphone jack, check. No-notch, check. Proper USB-C and fast-charging, check. Great camera, check. Big battery, check. Great chipset, check. The only things it gets wrong are the Price and the build (super-fragile, super slippery, and super-annoying (smudges, bad fingerprint location, edge distortion, letter-boxing)).... so despite the negatives, I can recommend this the most because the Price is dropping and the design complaints can be alleviated (but not rectified) by using proper case/accessories. Hence, it narrowly beat the Google Pixel 2 and OnePlus 5 devices.

(edit: I was going to recommend the S8 Active but its expensive, released very late, and is exclusive only to USA to only a single carrier.)

Biscuit, 02 Jan 2018As a Note8 owner I aggree. iPhoneX is one hell of a beast. ... moreIts more of a preference
Most of the people love the note 8s design and there are the people that love the Ix notch and all
At this point phones are so good its all preference tbh...

Subpar battery, terrible and laggy UI, awful overprocessing camera, mediocre speaker, comparatively mediocre microphones. Not to mention the battery issues that have cropped up recently.

It's not the best phone, not by miles.

If the Xperia XZ Premium was part of this poll. The Note 8 doesn't stand a chance.

I think that's the reason why they didn't include the Premium. XDXDXD

                              Because Sony is the BEST!

The ui navigation of iPhone X is still weird I mean they can use 3d touch if they want but nothing at all. Just weird swipe all around. Both cameras are pretty comparable I could say and the screen also kudos to Samsung. Multitasking is where the Note 8 outperforms the X. You could say ‘Hey my iphone X runs app faster’ but it will reload it once you will multitask so no.

Hands down, the beast won. It may not be the best in all areas but still it was a great all around phablet.
