If they just want to steal your bandwidth, it's not worth the effort. Sometimes, not even worth the effort to break a WEP network. If they wanted to steal money from you, then it'd be easier to use phishing, or drop a Trojan virus, or just out right rob you at gun point.
Given the reason to break WPA, the demand is just too low for the reward. If I use a brute force method to guess the password with a super computer, I'm sure it would take a lot less time. But what are the reward? In most cases, it ain't worth the effort.
Jailbreaking AND rooting an Android phone is much more rewarding. Comex accepts donations and I'm sure there are many other people donating. I myself have donated. The demand is very high and the reward is very high and therefore, people will spend their time doing it. Much more so then breaking a wireless encryption that may not give you the same level of reward in return.

For instance, look at wireless security WPA-2, it is essentially not hack-able because it will take 30+ years and requires lots of CPU, RAM resources so unless you dedicate a minimum of 30 years of hacking one password, you won't get it. If you do dedicate that much time, you are an idiot/loser! As well, Apple knows that most people jailbreak and its demand will go down, so to keep interest in their platform they probably download the jailbreak and backtrack to see what it exploits and cover the exploitation months later.

Why is it that the only way people can use an iphone is by jailbreaking it? Is the OS by itself really not that good?

This is rare but good for Apple.
They know iOS can be Jailbroken but this still acting loke "we didn't know"
This has a large benefits for Apple since users "underground" can use their iPhones in the way they want. This is good sales for iDevices since if you get a new one this can be Jailbreaked easy.
Maybe Dav Team and others are working in Apple payroll and the "cat & Mice" game is more at Tom & Jerry style....enemies but friends at least.
So, Apple knows their game, for users will be better if Jailbreak cames from "default" BUT Apple using a "mask" wants o make thing to users they didn't know about the exploits...
Cool :D the final benefit wl be for both users and Apple (sales).
