Counterclockwise: phone screens go wider than 16:9

05 January 2018
Extra wide screens went from an oddity to a flagship must-have in just one year.

    Thanks for your response.

      No one seems to mention Acer Iconia Smart from 2011-2012 which had 480x1024 resolution, which is wider than 18:9 (somewhere around 19.5:9)

        Inside the plane Singapore airlines.

        Air Steward: Do you need any helps?

        Me: Ma'am, is there any 18:9 in flight entertainment to get better viewing?

        Air Steward: Sorry, only 16:9 and 4:3 IFE on board. And yes, any phones that's 16:9 above to connect to the IFE is restricted.

        But seriously, the incident was really funny and guilty!!!!! Lol.

          I never understood the problem with "black bars", there will be no one size screen for everyone, for example ... i like 4:3 ratio for phones but i know no one will make a new phone with this ratio, for desktop i prefer 16:10.

              Screens wider than 16:9 are a welcome improvement over standard 16:9 screens. In wider screens, we don't need to worry about black bars at the top and bottom when watching movies. Also taller screens are better for touch screen phones because when you type on standard 16:9 screen, keyboard fills half of the screen and not much content can be seen on remaining screen area. Also, wider screens are better for social media usage-more content fits in the screen.

                People also forget that when you record videos, the phone records in 16:9 aspect ratio.

                It's very bad on the iPhone X and Galaxy S8... you don't see the full picture on the phone.
                I tried to record a segment at a precise point, cutting off an object at the bottom of the screen, which looked okay on the phone, but when I uploaded it, the object was still in the frame!
                That's an epic fail, because you either have to accept the step back in quality and practicality... or you have to edit the video carefully which requires a decently powerful Windows PC. Overall, 18:9 is WORSE because it makes a phone larger, less usable, and a smaller screen than a practical 16:9 device. It's just a clever marketing tricking most people, including most of the Indian visitors on GSMArena.

                If I could "go back in time", the aspect ratio that I think is best and I would put on the industry is Root Two (aka 1:1.414). The International Standards ISO 216, like A4 paper.
                It means as you "scale up", you are essentially doubling the resolution (ie Powers of 2) which works well with Moores Law. Also, you can lock the progression of pixel count to resistor counts and software mapping in Binary... resulting in a Perfect Pixel Matched progression. Not to mention it is VERY tablet friendly. And it allows Exact side-by-side multitasking windows.

                I'd probably pick Steve Jobs/Apple, since they have a massive influence, to push this standard on the industry from the first iPhone, so my little escapade through time might look a little like this:
                E1= 1,2,4,8,16,32,64
                E7= 128 x 90
                E7+= 180 x 128
                E8 = 256 x 180
                E8+= 362 x 256
                E9 = 512 x 362 (iPhone 1/3G/3GS)
                E9+= 724 x 512 (iPhone 4/4S/4C)
                E10 = 1024 x 724 (iPhone 5/5S/SE)
                E10+= 1448 x 1024 (iPhone 6/7/8)
                E11 = 2048 x 1448 (iPhone 6/7/8 Plus)
                E11+= 2896 x 2048 (iPhone X/Y/Z)
                E12 = 4096 x 2896
                E12+= 5792 x 4096
                E13 = 8192 x 5792
                E13+= 11584 x 8192
                ... ... ... etc etc

                    The bottomline is that nobody was able to think or implement 18:9 early enough.
                    When moving forward from the old tradition 3:2 ratio like on the pre-iPhone 5 era, the evolution should've been to 18:9 instead of 16:9, so that more contents were actually made in that ratio, and we no longer have to fight over adjusting a slight change.

                    It's not like I can never use a 18:9 display, but I wish for manufacturers to make better use of it while it's still developing and starting to begin.
                    18:9 is an amazing idea that lazy OEMs did just for the sake of doing it.

                      GSM Arena says wider, but all my brain can see is more thinner and thinner phones!

                      So this twisting of reality is one of technology brainwash agenda? Lmao...

                        Flagship phones are using 18:9 screens and yet we still can't view Instagram in landscape mode. App developers have to catch up quickly as squarish images look low-res on such tall screens.

                            This 18:9 trend must stop....
                            Even 16:9 aspect ratio display can be fit with a less bezels on smartphones.
                            so why this 18:9 is considered for less bezels by each and every company out there ?
                            This makes no sense to change from 16:9 to 18:9.

                              Anonymous, 08 Jan 2018The big question is... Will TV become 18:9 Should I wait ... moreNope, tv will stay with 16:9 ratio for good in very long time, unlike monitor that have various aspects to choose from since tv relied in broadcast channel that still use 16:9 video camera, and if 18:9 tv suddenly came out this year, it will take longer for the tv content to adapt because filming gear is expensive to replace not to mention people don't buy tv like they buy smartphone
                              So, the adoption rate will be slow

                                    It's manipulation and planned obsolescence.. They want people to replace their 16:9 TVs and monitors to 18:9 in the future.

                                      Can you GSM arena update the Phone finder options and add 16:9 or 18:9 ratio phone screens ?
                                      Also can you increase the screen size MAX limit from 6 to 6.1,6.2,6.3 etc up to 7 ?

Both need fast switching pixels, high res (600+ ppi ideally) and great gpu grunt. None of which exists on 18:9 phones, if anything provocatively so (Samsung is sitting on 600+ ppi mobile screens for years yet doesn't give them to the public making VR even for something as simple as movie watching, a pipe dream).

                                        No, 2:1 + phones were made for one reason and one reason alone: browsing, whether is it on facebook messenger or instagram. In fact the top 4 apps (FB, Messenger, Instagram, What's up) all heavily favor tall screens. It's the manufacturers listening to the needs of the masses for one.

                                        So I don't get the ere , I mean I don't like it either because I find most of social networking a waste of time, but you won't see me screaming on top o' my lungs "Gimme my old aspect ratio back" ... I get it, I don't like it, but I get it. I don't know why you can't/don't...
