mir, 07 Jan 2018Why the weird aspect ratio when there's practically a lot m... moreWhen TV's come out with the 16:9 ratio then movies were still made to be 21:9 or something like that what rendered the 16:9 useless as you still have black pars in top and bottom. There are still lots of movies that come with that stupid ratio that you have these black pars.

Why the weird aspect ratio when there's practically a lot more content for 16:9? And isn't ironic that we were mocking the iphone for its increased length some years ago and that they were gonna end up with a remote? Now we have almost every android OEM making phones that are already looking like remotes by how tall and narrow they've become!

There are four problems with your analogy
1) unlike the mate 10 and mate 10 pro that have similar diagonal, the S7 has a smaller diagonal 5.5 compared to S8's 5.8 screen. Which takes me to the next point
2) both mate 10's have small bezels but you forget to note that not only are the S8's bezels smaller (including the side bezels), the side edges are also curved making it tricky to measure and makes the phone feel ergonomically smaller when held. Those who have used S7 and S7 edge can testify.
3) the phone size (not display size), the S7 is taller than the S8'S (top and bottom bezels again) and hence would look chunkier
4) And finally, your own conclusion shows your biase and just proves me right. How? The S7 and S8 have similar display area (83.4 S7 vs 84.8 S8) even though the S8'S has much smaller bezels and higher diagonal. Note that before the aspect ratio came into play, diagonal was proportional to screen area.
NOTE: It better to watch video content (except Hollywood movies) and browse the web with a 16:9 display than 18:9. Note that those who like big phones mostly prefer them for gaming and media consumption.
And the S8'S is more than 65mm wide which means it cannot be conviniently used for one hand typing (and I have big hands). My issue is I don't see the advantage of phones being taller, but even if everyone digs tall phones (which is not the case), why don't they give us the options and see which one we would choose intead of trying to psychologically playing us to link tall screens to bezeless screens.

To me, width of a phone plays a big role, because it determines easiness of one hand operation. Try to compare S8 with 18.5:9 and S7 with regular 16:9. S8 has a higher diagonal + more screen area while it is actually narrower compared to S7. Even if S8 is longer than S7, it is easier to use, I have tried it myself obviously. Although I miss physical buttons. This algorithm of comparing wider phone screens to regular applies to most of the phones.

I watch most movies on my phone & the 18:9 ratio is cool actually! The movies fit quite perfectly unlike 16:9 ratio.

Why can't we have small bezels with 16:9 screen?
Hate this 18:9 ratio and the sad thing is that I'm going to use that in my next phone because I have no choice.

Once in past we had an ugly bricks thick but very durable.
Now we have ugly bricks thin with a zero durability from damage like failing.

Why this trend of 18:9 even started? Nobody was asking for it. Now it's growing standard. Yet customers don't complain as much as lack sd card on S6's. We have no saying.

As long as it doesn't break into a million pieces on the first drop, I don't care. But I think 5.5 is my limit. I can barely use it with one hand.
Also phablets leaves no room for privacy. EVERYONE can see what you are doing.

Mate10 (non pro) has 16:9 ratio with smaller bezels and front fingerprint and more screen compared to Mate10 pro which has 18:9 ratio

I think around 50% or more like adopt wide (or tall which is much more appropriate) ratio and most phone will look the same I dont care much about ratio as long as it ruin movie watching experiencet but here is no denying than wider (taller) ratio is taking over
