"The widening of screens also coincided with the shrinking of bezels – phones would have become too tall otherwise"
What? So16:9 ratio is taller than 18:9 or are my missing something. The best way of comparing these two aspect ratios is use the mate ten variants (mate 10 and mate 10 pro) and then everything becomes clear
~thee pro is taller while the mate 10 is wider
~the mate 10 has a higher display area than the pro even though the mate 10 has a 5.9" screen compared to the 6" on the pro version
~the mate 10 has a higher screen to body ratio (>81%) despite having a front FPS any hence bigger top and bottom bezels than the pro
CONCLUSION: A 16:9 bezeless phone will have a larger display area, better screen to body ratio and less shampoo bottle screen compared to the 18:9 variants of the same diagonal. Even an advantage of a front FPS option and also remember that the control buttons are generally are at the top or the bottom of the screen which makes them harder to reach on a tall phone.
    The question is then why do manufacturer, tech blogs and Fanboys insist on the tall aspect ratios?;
1)It is easier to follow the trends of the market leaders (Samsung, apple) thereby undercutting them than trying to set your own.
    2) well, as for Fanboys, if Samsung or apple says taller aspect ratios are the future, then they must be right. And since Fanboys Will always be Fanboys they will come up with 100 reasons why.
    3) Tech Blogs will also andorse such moves because of $$$$$, or because most of there readers are Fanboys of the big brands or they themselves are Fanboys (which is obvious from the articles)
PS: The only advantage of tall phones is having a bigger display when typing. (Please don't talk about opening two windows at the same time on such displays because it is worst especially in the landscape mode)

coolsauce, 07 Jan 2018This is all psychological play on consumers. Instead of kee... more16:10 is the golden ratio 1.618:1
            I think it is best

This is all psychological play on consumers. Instead of keeping the screens as big as they were but making the phones smaller they decided to go full on marketing and claim same size phone but with more of a screen. That's why they went with 2:1 screens instead of 16:9 with no bezel. It's a myth that 16:9 cannot be had with no bezel.

Truth is the horizontal extensions you got on these 2:1 screens are useless. No benefits at all. First, all of the 2:1 devices scale down the images on screen compared to 16:9 because they lost the width. Compare it yourself. Second, tall narrow screens introduce a lot of hand travel and grip adjustment. Combine that with Android bottom toolbar that sits and the very edge of the phone and Menu overflow icon on the top most header and you have a hot mess almost impossible to do anything one handed.

Screen needs to grow proportionally in order to ripe all the benefits, there is simply no way around it. 16:9 is great for multimedia and 16:10 is great for general usage. 2:1 is just excessive hardware.

I would still love to see LG BL40 in new version...

I actually would love to see LG Chocolate series Xperia Arc in metal body and Samsung omniaHD and one of UltraTOUCH model with better materials and bigger screen...

Those old devices had Soul and Style, they where unique in design and features. Now we have just slabs of metal and glass that is different just by placement of camera at the back. If you cover logos and put all new devices close to each other you will have hard time to pick one, because they just slabs of glass/metal...

Today design of phones is so bad and annoying that OEMs advertise colors as some amazing feature... they even create fake demand on them, like mat white/grey would be some amazing technique that need years to make...

As we start to see phones with minimal top/bottom bezels, I can actually understand why taller ratios make sense here. Not for video or photo, but normal content, like browser, weather, all that. Because we hold the same kind of phones in our hands, the length and width of 16:9 big bezel and 18:9 small bezel are the same (or only a slight bit narrower) on the same footprint, just that the screen reaches further to the top and bottom. You can see this for example when looking at the A8 2018, which looks just like a normal, modern phone, and the Nokia 6 2018, which looks kind of strange and boxy. I hope that the industry will find a new standard with 18:9 and small bezels even on low end phones. If a phone still has big bezels, it gets a 16:9 screen, simple as that. But I don't want 21:9, this is just too much. 18:9 seems like a sweet spot for the future.

So, is "wider" or "taller" more appropriate?
                        16:9 and 18:9, or 9:16 and 9:18??

PS. Companies put their logo according to the portrait mode on smartphones, unlike on televisions (landscape)

I have the S8 and I'm more than happy with screen. But I don't like the idea of having narrow and long phone... it also reminds me of one youtube parody about tallest iPhone...

                              18:9 is an abomination.
You call it wide but if you try to read that way, you only get half a dozen lines.
The galaxy s and now are worse because you also lose the bent bit.
Fashion trends instead of practical use.
Photos in that ratio will have dreadful distortions at the side points. The lenses are circular,so the more extreme the rectangle the worse it becomes.
You don't actually SEE the stuff that is going on at the edges of a movie. Whilst we have varying degrees of peripheral vision the vast majority of what we look at is straight in front of us.
I long for the days of 4:3 (12:9).

                                    Motorola Nexus 6:
                                    - big screen - 6" with beautiful 16:9 aspect

                                    - OIS camera

the stupid industry are putting 2 CAMERA on front 2 CAMERA on the back but they are so stupid to put only a freaking speaker on bottom !!!
We have 2 ears and 2 eyes, not 1 ear and 2 eyes !

Today are TONS of STUPID phones who dont have: STEREO front speakers (not bottom, not back, but FRONT speakers, not mono but STEREO) !!!
are TONS of STUPID phones who are coming with LCD in 2018!!!

                                    1) LOOK AT good (5, 5.5, 6 versions of the same phone with OLED screen)
                                    2) LISTENING good (stereo FRONT speakers)
                                    3) one decent camera (OIS, HDR)

                                      These 18:9 (2:1) are shit !!

The marketing make a way to a new wave of VR (Virtual Reality) and AR (Augmented Reality) which need screens 2:1 to make the effect.

But that 2:1 bring narrow screens and phones are very inefficient to make a good read or look.

I hope these 2:1 is just a phase and will return to better 16:9.

It's a shame Huawei lunch Mate 10 Pro 2:1 with OLED and nice look and fingerprint at the back, which is very well but Mate 10 16:9 with stupid LCD and one stupid button on front bottom !

They didn't do Mate 10 Pro and Mate 10 with the SAME OLED and other characteristics just 2:1 vs 16:9 like differences and the same market ads to see what people will choose, nop... they didn't.

Look, they have only just gone and made the previously unthinkable mainstream (again).

The SR is now the standard all other devices are now measured against.
