I for one root my phones from day 1. I don't care about loosing the warranty because 99% of the time I know what I'm doing. As for the updates, with root you can flash android versions from XDA that the brand doesn't provide because the phone is too outdated. Or you can make your own android rom.
Google apps are not affected by root by the way.
As for the gaining part, it all depends on what you do with your phone. With the right set of skills, determination and packages you can do wonders.

Why does it matter how many phones Samsung has released?

And there isn't a thing where Samsung phones don't exceed Xiaomi and Huawei. They are only cheaper, pre loaded with spyware *ehem* security breach... *ehem*.
So price is their main feature. Even tho, Huawei isn't even cheap for what they offer.

You really don't have much to gain.
                    You can brick your phone.
                    You lose warranty.
You lose acess to Google Play as I heard...
                    Good luck with updates...

Just keep rooting for phones like Xiaomi or Lenovo. Don't play with phones that are worth something.

AnonD-441601, 11 Jan 2018All not. Even from a budget phone i would expect at least... moreI agree with you on the storage part, but disagree with phones not being able to run apps from SD card. If you root your phone, you can make an ext4 partition on your sd card and install ALL the apps there, including the system apps.
That way, everything will run from the SD card. Keep in mind that you will need a very GOOD card though. Class 10 or similar.
And if you pop up the sd card, the phone becomes useless :))
That's a good one for the thieves. They have no clue about it, they take the sd card out and the phone turns into a brick.
For a regular user that only knows to Facebook and take selfies this might seem a nightmare, but for tech geeks this is quite a joy ride.

Kiyasuriin, 11 Jan 2018I completely agree with you. but all that was meant to the... moreThere are plenty of things that are not perfect compared to older models even

For one it takes 100x (!) the time to get charged (older models you could just pop a spare)
Another is that it has about half the durability (in both battery life due to not being able to pop a spare and/or structural integrity).

Third is that it gets old faster as as of now there is no easy way to replace an aging battery.

4th it's less wide than older Note models despite being bigger in total dimensions (as far as profile is concerned)

And that's just the issues when compared to older notes. To concurrent models the issue is that it forces you to use the micro sd for added storage (most modern phones come with 256GB embedded), another issue is that it has low pixel density despite being marketed for VR (half that of Sony Premium), lower battery life than most chinese flagships, weak SoC (compared to Kirin 970 and A11), camera far below Mate Pro's , iPhone 8/X's and Pixel 2's...

In general it is one of the least impressive phones of 2017 in everything apart from looks. People are fooled easily these days it seems.

Compare this to Note 4, which for its time was top in almost everything (best SoC by far, most RAM, best Screen by far, best battery/battery life by *far*, no charging time) ... it was loaded. This one ? Meeeh.

AnonD-711468, 11 Jan 2018How is it best? There is not one thing that it does better ... moreI completely agree with you.
but all that was meant to the size. I wanted to experience a long term experiment of Note 8.
EVERYTHING is perfect. until it comes to the size. which is Why I said it's a pain in the ass.
not everyone are big phones lover, that's true. and not everyone are a small phone lovers too. there is the big phones camp "THE BIGGER. THE BETTER for me!"
and the small phone camp "If it ain't entering my denim pant's pocket. I ain't buyin' it!"
there is a third camp. of mid sized phones. to that camp I belong.
as for the note 4. Yeah. I agree. it's a beauty and a perfect phone for it's time!

8 or 16 is jjust not enough. Soon updates of even basic apps included with your android will fill all your space and nothing will help you. Not even memory card.
Because no phone can run apps from memory card.
