I liked XA2, mostly for the major improvements compared to XA and XA1. I believe there will be very good battery life. Sony have their own style & design which are not everybody's cup of tea. But I'm glad that they stay true to themselves and not chasing someone else's visions for design like most manufacturers do- among hundreds of devises you can always recognize Sony phones.

I have a Sony Xperial L1 as a backup phone: 1. It's lovely to look at, all black, and even the screen blacks are so dark, it blends into the black case. 2. As ever, Sony's build of Android is modern, very very 'snappy' (even a 3 year old Xperia is still snappy), 3. When browsing the web in Chrome, it's way smoother than on my Note8, no doubt because the screen is lower rest, but it's still easy to read. 4. USB-C is welcome. 5. Battery life is superb. 6. The all plastic case is going to be tougher than any glass premium phone. I wish Sony (and others!) would stop using glass, and return to grippy plastic for even their premium phones.
The L2 makes it all better with a finger print reader and offers an alternative to the other best budget phones, the Moto G series.

Akorn Farmer, 15 Jan 2018The Sony Xperia at CES 2018 were not hot at all. The SD630 ... moreYou forgot the Nokia 7, Nokia 6 2018 and the HTC U11 Life, they all have the 630 too.
It's a midrange phone, can't expect too much from the design.
Much better value than the Galaxy A 2018 Series

hime-sama, 15 Jan 2018Seems like sony is trying to become iphone of the android e... moreYes, unfortunately Sony bundles a lot of crapware on its Android phones. I'm talking about Xperia Lounge etc. Other stuff such as MobiSystems' File Commander are also installed, and you cannot remove them without rooting the phone. The Xperia Android skin is light and is the next best thing to stock Android.

What Sony needs is to make a Nexus/Pixel device of its own, running stock Android. Stop letting LG, HTC and Huawei have all the fun.

Akorn Farmer, 15 Jan 2018The Sony Xperia at CES 2018 were not hot at all. The SD630 ... moreFor the price of a XA2/Ultra, you can get a decent Xiaomi phone which has Snapdragon 835.

I guess there's nothing wrong with the XA2/Ultra if you're a hardcore Sony fan, but as far as midrange phones are concerned, Sony has priced itself out of the market.

The discounts will come after a few months. If you must buy, wait a bit.

scumbro, 15 Jan 2018It has indeed grown up. XA2 Ultra is the heaviest phone in ... moreIndeed, a weight of 221g is insane. The iPhone 8 Plus is 202g and even that is too heavy for a phone.

But the XA2 Ultra is 9.5mm thick, 1-2mm thicker than most smartphones today.

Ironically I think the XA2's battery life will outlast the XA2 Ultra's. So unless you really want a huge display (sacrificing pocket-friendliness and one-hand use) and the dual front cameras, between the two I'd recommend the XA2.

The Sony Xperia at CES 2018 were not hot at all. The SD630 AP is old chip released May of last year. It is already superseded by SD636 released October last year. Qualcomm said that SD636 will be 40% faster than old SD630. SD630 was not so popular. There are only two phone models that use the SD630: Moto 4X which is released last August, and Asus ZenFone 4 (ZE554KL), both are not so successful. So Sony phone with SD630 is too late by 6 months.

And the design of XA2/Ultra shows its age: Wide low bezel and 16:9 screen AR. It's old 2017 style, not 2018. Many recent Chinese phones has 18:9 screen and much narrower lower bezel. So XA2 looks behind fashion.

Only saving grace for XA2 Ultra model is that it has good dual cameras (and one with OIS) in front.

Today is the 4th anniversary of owning Xperia C, still using it without issues its known weakness of front camera and small internal memory.
It was a very excellent Xperia Mate, waiting for Duall SIM XZ2 Compact.

Sony phones are mediocre at their price range,,,,forget it.

Seems like sony is trying to become iphone of the android ecosystem. Not trying to impress with new technology, but going full on optimization, delivering the best everyday user experience, speed and stability. Even my XA Ultra has no slowdowns after 1,5 years, and that is very impressive for a midrange phone.
