13 January 2018
It aims to cut off US ties with the two Chinese companies, citing allegations of sensitive information exchange.

Besides us owns China trillion plus dollars in debt doesn't it. What's the guarantee that iPhone doesn't have spyware hardwired in by Foxconn? You can wire a mic in a mixer for god's sake. If government wants to spy on you, it'll find a way anyhow. Now what's that of concern to average citizen is beyond me. I understand the government part. What about an average service guy or techie needing more options to buy other than the big 2 in US..

Huawei is one of the biggest smartphone markets in the world along with Xiaomi, Samsung, LG, Apple, Google, Sony, Nokia. Blackberry used to be the biggest, now it makes stupid phones.

Anonymous, 14 Jan 2018So you think Google, Twitter and FB and all companies based... moreSo you seem to agree that the Chinese companies most probably spy for the CCP? Coupled with the fact that the Chinese companies were caught "sharing with the Chinese state intimate and extensive knowledge of foreign telecommunications systems it is involved with" is it really that surprising that US is trying to prohibit their use in government applications? I'm actually perplexed that it didn't happen sooner.
Also it shocks me how ignorant on China are most of the posters here. You can't really compare Google gathering your preferences to personalize ads to the censorship and government spying on its citizens present in China. In fact, anyone who's making such arguments either doesn't know what he's talking about or simply lying. Especially coming from the US citizens. Guess what would happen if you tried criticizing Chinese government online? Officials have been sacked for saying in private that Mao Zedong had also some terrible deeds ffs! Try going to China and you'll notice that you can't connect to ANY public WI-FI network without providing your personal information. Or better yet, try searching for Tian an men massacre from a Chinese network network on a Chinese device without masking your IP or using VPN. Actually, that's an efficient way to block Chinese spam bots and con artists that the Japanese have developed. They drop something along those lines in the chat program and the Chinese bots get disconnected instantly. Come to China yourself and see how you'll like having all the news sites, messengers and social networks not controlled by the government blocked. If you think that google gathering your search preferences is bad, please by all means google Sesame Credits, which is a system created to measure how good a citizen you are based on what you type online, what you buy (e.g. it adds point for being a good parent and buying diapers and subtracts them for buying games), who you are friends with, where you spend you holidays and weekends, whether you follow the traffic regulations, whether you adhere to government birth control policy, what you repost online and what you like on social networks. And then this score will be used to measure if you're illegible for traveling abroad, buying airplane tickets, putting your kid in a better school, having better interest rates for loans, what jobs you can get, what housing you can rent, if you can get faster internet etc. You really have to see it to believe it and it just boggles my mind when someone makes a comparison that serves only to highlight his ignorance.

Then, they barley pay their workers, and some even use child labour.
You also buy toxic materials like Cobalt in your phone too.
So you buy a cheap chinese phone thinking "What a good deal I got" - and in exchange, you got a phone with poor screen, poor camera, which is also spying on you and your money goes to everyone but people/kids who actually made your phone. I don't even know what hazadrs happen from toxic materials they use to make those same phones. Sounds like a really good deal...

                      It was about time.
Phones coming with pre-installed spyware... we aren't talking here about data of your usage that companies might collect to improve user experience, here we talk about security breach. Spying on literally ALL content and everything you do on your phone. Even your passwords or card numbers if you buy stuff online over your phone.
And all that data being sent to unknown servers in China...
I hope both, US and Europe ban them.

it is your responsibility for your own data.

Start to give that ******** president and comrades what they deserve. BAN any american business from China. Let them sell prehistoric phones made in Kentucky, for example.

Contrary to what the liars may say, China does not need to do business in the USA, it already has the rest of the world with them, but the USA will lose a lot without being able to manufacture in China. It's time to give it good in their fu***** a** and prove it to the hypocrite and demagogue who they currently have as president!

China has as much weight internationally and economically as the United States and to impose sanctions and vetoes as well.

It's time to take legal but firm actions against that idiot and his egocentric voters. You have to make them swallow their own medicine from now.

                                Just said.
