Exynos 7872 unveiled: hexa-core CPU with A73 cores, plus an iris scanner

While a fingerprint reader is pretty standard on mid-range phones now, iris scanners have only been used in flagships.

      well, the CPU cores will be much more powerful as showed the first Antutu benches, which scored around 88k.

      the GPU is IMHO mediocre, as seen in the Samsung A8. but on the other hand, more than 90% of the users won't notice the difference, as only a fraction of the phone users really need that much graphics power. most of the games I see on phones are simple 2D games that even a SD 430 can handle with ease. the same is true for watching videos and the like.

        Isn't this soc pretty much identical to the one in the Samsung A8? The same CPU and GPU setup wih the Mali, with the only difference being the supported resolution.

        I like the use of higher end A73 cores in a mid ranger, should provide a good step up in CPU performance compared to the earlier A53 based Exynos 7870. Disappointed with the GPU if its an mp3 configuration. It should perform lower than a SD 652/650 from 2016-17.

        Nothing about the memory configuration, whether the RAM is a dual channel or single channel. Dual channel configurations offer more bandwidth for 3d/graphics heavy workloads.

        Also no mention about the L2 cache size. It impacts performance to a significant degree especially in complex workloads.

          I referred to the ENCODE part. which is 75% done by the ISP piece. and the rest 25% is done like you've mentioned.

AFAIK GPU is only used for post processing and compression (Which will be done after you record anyway). Sony lastest 960Fps even used Stacked ram for the camera due to enermous bandwith it needed for the video. Hell, even I never know any SLR/Camcorder manufacture that advertise their GPU. I Still wanna read your source thou.

I smelled the colo... moreYes, ISP play part in video recording, but ISP is not the only one doing the work here, a weak gpu can attribute to bad video recording also since the video need to be processed, ISP mostly play part in generating and encoding the frame while the processing capability still went to gpu,
                  If not why you think apple make a huge deal about their A11 bionic that can record 4K@60fps? It mostly thanks yo their powerful gpu that not only make that possible, but can do some neural processing albeit not as good as dedicated npu

                    However a majority of phone users aren't gamers. So it really isn't a deal breaker if the phone is marketed correctly.

                        With their 1 or 2 cores cheap GPUs... Even 3 years old flagships have better GPUs.

                            What isn't mentioned in this article, and what I think is very interesting, is that this SoC has a built in CDMA compatible modem. This means Samsung reached a deal with Qualcomm over licensing. It could also mean that the Exynos 9810 in the upcoming S9 has CDMA support, which means we could potentially see the 9810 in all S9 versions. There were reports in the summer about the 9810 having CDMA, but nothing has been said recently, and everyone is assuming that US versions will get the SD 845. The US may get the 845, but going by the specs, there will be a difference in performance between the two, which would pose a slight problem for Samsung. The 9810 in all markets would solve that issue.

                              GPUs are the units that control the screen's display. how it feels to play games. and so on.
                              there is another processor thing called ISP. (Image Sensor Processor) this thing can controll the video.

                                Where is the 11nm in mass production chips??. This chip will power new J 2018 phones. Good to see a73 cores but no 18:9 screen is dissapointing

                                      I love how chip manufacturers just started to implement A73 cores into their mid range chips. But there is still a problem left: eMMC 5.1, this makes me cry. There should be at least UFS 2.0, 2.1 would be even better.
