They should have not combined the marketshare of WM and WP. I know WP's percentage is tiny but that will soon change when Nokia makes its triumphant return to the US market with their WP lineup.

I like to see a worldwide chart for all devices (both feature phones and smartphones). Because, US is not the World and all phones aren't smart and expensive.

Vilim, 29 Jul 2011Samsung Galaxy S II had been in the US for only a few days,... moreYou are right SGS 2 cant be judged by only U.S. market there is so many phones which are really great but they are not good for the U.S. market we should check other markets in the world samsung and htc are leading in many places in the world for an example nokia here in egypt is the leading phone because people here are not tech geeks and only a phone which is fast and you can keep it in a good shape for a long time i think if a company wants to be successful it should think what every country wants and have a good strategy for every country not just have one strategy for the world

The N9 is probably the most liable factor for me to conclude this. Rumors of a Nokia T9 phone having powerful hardware reinforces my opinion that Nokia is changing. Just my speculations though, don't take it too seriously.

Sun Down, 29 Jul 2011Exactly. And HTC has a lot of potential, but I can clearly ... moreI think their strategy is offering every price range the most competitive device. That means they have to keep upgrading for the early adopters, and this is usually worth doing simply because the experiences of early adopters are generally the basis for the 'later' customer base growth.

You're probably right about the constant increase in specs, but I just don't see how there is any commercial value in putting full attention to the improvement of Symbian when it is already discontinued. Only ever so rarely do you see companies that do this, and since Nokia hasn't been the most proactive company lately, I have little faith in them being any different on this...

                      blah blah blah blah. Whatever.

Fact 1: Symbian may well be the largest 'current' OS right now, but their numbers are going to start dropping off a cliff any day now as network capacities are upgraded outside Europe and US and users upgrade to Android or iOS.

Fact 2: At the rate Android is growing, it's going to be way the biggest OS in 12-18 months. Basic maths, Apple can sell all the smartphones it wants, but it can't outsell 25 or 30 smaller Android manufacturers.

Fact 3: Apple - all of their eggs are in one basket. Should they make the slightest misjudgement in their design or capability, they will take an horrendous beating.

Fact 4: How many 'new' Apple converts are there? The only people I know with Iphones are upgraders from a previous version - which means if replicated, the number of iOS users will remain static.

Fact 5: Top line Android phones are now easily as good as iphones, and with critical mass, and mass market adoption behind them, it seems that Android will outpace iOS in the next year or two.

Fact 6: Iphones still seen as a 'premium product'. Why should I get an Iphone 4 for £35 per month when I can get an SII or a Sensation for less than £20 per month? The Iphone 5 won't be any cheaper.

Fact 7: Apple have gone down this route before, bringing out brilliant products but then refusing to license or co-operate with anyone else until it's too late and getting to the point of bankruptcy when the competition catches up and overtakes them. They have to work twice as hard to keep their users.

Who is best? Who cares, I don't, all I care about is getting a phone that works best for me, and at the moment that isn't iOS because they're too restrictive and petty. It's the telephone equivalent of getting a pat on the head and hearing the words 'there, there, it's alright, go and play in the garden whilst the grown ups talk'. I'd rather be able to think for myself thanks.

C'mon Elop, haven't it reached you yet? Windows OS ain't gaining anything. It's stuck right there period! And you wanna focus on windows phone knowing you got a hell of a charge to make to even put a dent on android.. IOS even! Have you at least considered having faith on Meego and maybe just maybe new buyers looking into an android or even an apple phone might give Meego a second look.. Considering the rave reviews of the soon to be released N9 have been getting. Now that RIM is struggling perhaps another fresh OS could give these two top rankers something to think about. C'mon Nokia, you would have saved a lot if you didn't given into Elop's fondness of Microsoft by just simply booting him out and rethink about Meego's fate and make lots of money. How about it?

Why? They're releasing a new product for a small incrementing hardware upgrade. 800 MHz? New product. 1 GHz? New product. 1 GB RAM? New Product. Dual-core? New product. This has the same psychological effect as what the PC has to the consumers. Too many choices for the average Joe to make it short. If HTC exploits this (considering how popular they are), they should just follow Apple's strategy. Simplify the product's names and DON'T update too quickly. The build up momentum (assuming their popularity remains intact) will make their new upgraded product feels incredible compared to other phones. Let's just hope they won't turn into Apple.

Gem86, 29 Jul 2011The balance probably won't shift that way. Again, why would... moreYou missed my point about it being economical. In other words a dual-core CPU and the likes are cheap. Like I said, all these high-end stuff will be the norm in the near future, so why not put it all in the low/mid-end segment? Let the high-end segment get the expensive parts. This is just like the time where people say they don't need more than 1 GB of RAM for their PC, or the time when people thought a quad-core CPU is overkill. Look at how things changed now. Standards will change whether you like it or not.

The SGS 2 is still a high-end, very... moreNot only that although I respect HTC as one of the best smartphone maker, HTC had a chance to sell more devices in US the biggest android buyer. With no SG2 in US and the delay of the Moto Bionic and not to mention Droid X2 and Droid 3 arrive also late. HTC took a full advantage and sell more devices. Still with the GS2 announced and the upcoming Bionic 4G things will look different.

But I hope it won't get that far. I never liked monopolism, look what it has done to Apple towards its users. Rather, this should be a message for other manufacturers to step their game up. And they can do so without spending R&D on new device specs and pushing the envelope there... they just need to bring a smooth, troublefree Droid experience and ditto support.

Again, why would a Symbian mid-end user be interested in paying for dual core, 2ghz cpu and ditto pricy GPU?? It isn't the market for Symbian. They just want to make a few photo's, maybe check an internet page or two, and primarily make calls and send text.
