When I saw "ecosystem" in the title and before reading the article, I thought it as a real "ecosystem" as in natural ecosystem... haha.
If it's possible, I'll go for both. Unfortunately there is no such option. Ecosystem is important, especially an open one. Hardware is even more important, since in phones you can't tinker your hardware like you can do in a desktop PC.

Both hardware and software very much matter to me. I want a very versatile tool that'll be able to get the job done with great performance, battery life, and extremely versatile software with barely any limitations. So far, the Note 8 with its amazing display, S-Pen, MicroSD expansion, great camera, great battery life, and very feature-packed skin is top on my list. Take away any of the above and it's no longer suitable hardware nor software wise for my daily use...

I don't know... I haven't still come to terms with the immature app ecosystem(unless you are willing to pay ridiculous amount of money) of ios nor its joke of a widget system, or its refusal to remove training wheels for the user but i have to say apps that are there are indeed well balanced for the product(not picking on apple here.. Just taking an unusual example) so i went with an ipad rather than tab s3 for my pdf reading and markup
On the other hand for my daily rounds and work i prefer the note 8..the s pen is more work and less play for me.. Off screen notes is the best thing that happened to phones..
In the end its a balance between ecosystem and hardware that does the job

While hardware plays a vital role in executing an ecosystem that will meet the needs of users, it's truly the ecosystem that "sells" us the phones. You don't look at the internals of the phone to say that's what you need. You ask yourself, does this phone perform fast? Look at the numerous number of Android flagship phones. They have amazing hardware specs however, a few updates from the time they got sold and you'll see a significant change in the performance of the phone. That is because the ecosystem wasn't designed to "last" or "age" well. It seems as if the ecosystem is fixed to a specific set of hardware. So users end up looking for the next best thing, making us think it's the hardware that's important but it's actually how well the ecosystem was designed that's bad.

Ecosystem is fine to consider important... if You have a wide product range to choose from. If no, then the whole ecosystem is useless, because You can't buy the phone You want. That's what hardware gives You.
You like great sound? Go for Sony. OLED displays? Samsung does them best. High performance phone for low price? Hey, Xiaomi... You have the choice. With Apple ecosystem, there is nothing like choice. Sorry, nothing for me.
Yordan's article about importance of ecosystem seems too forced. As if even it's author does not really agree with it.

can you be more specific ?... please give me some examples of moto innovations that have convinced you to get back to moto smartphones ... actually for now what moto handset do you use ? ... and your engineer colleagues ?

Ecosystem is very important because it is the basic but the hardware even more important!! Because hardware can produce a better quality product just like the battery lifespan can be strong and longer than usual or depleted can't charge, the front firing stereo speaker or mono cheap speaker, a solid and best structure designs or fragile edge glass designs

Both are actually extremely important, but there is no option to vote for both. So chose ecosystem over hardware. Who would vote for hardware anyway LoL, a great hardware with poor ecosystem is pathetic.

Ecosystem is more important, a good ecosystem will still save you more time overall than good hardware imo.
Apple's is that good that you wouldnt notice much of a difference going from an SE to a iphone 8 or even an Iphone 5 to iphone 8.

As far as my personal experience goes, it's eco-system first. To me ios feels very limited & I simply hate the philosophy of apple to keep the users forcibly in its ecosystem without giving easy options to switch to other ones. Pixel opens all the doors to a great user experience. It's simple, elegant, smooth, reliable and customisable. What more do we need?

Deeloping James Watt steam machine back in mid 18th centaury was too late for ecosystem.
Thats the father of all the modern technology.
