    I was pre-public alpha/beta relase tester,i dont remember ever having heard of petit four !!

      I mean Google likes to up the number without much reason. Truth is that v4's naming scheme was better. Every new SDK that made relatively few differences was upped by .1 ... only major changes would take a new number (v5 - Lollipop).

      BTW no wonder that Jelly Bean got the greatest reception. It came in the heels of a failed version (too many bugs), that is android v4.0 with little adoption and stayed the longest (Kitkat was released 18 months later) ... heck it is still being used.

      Other Versions would have had as great adoption too if not for the whacked out naming/numbering scheme that Google is using as of recent.

          Ironically, Jelly Bean was the last dark version of Android, with gradients.

          Since then, Android has been slowly turning into an iOS clone.

              Instead of making a new Android versions might as well make a 8.2, 8.3, 8.4 etc or 8.1.1 8.1.2 etc but stay Oreo.
              Why the need to change name every year?

                Android with it's open source nature and manufacturer with their own UI on it will always mean fragmentation is here to stay. If Google go apple way, there will be little support from manufacturers who will try to innovate with their own fork of OS. Sad but true, Andriod will remain a popular tinker choice with fragmentation.

                  The update system on other Android manufacturer besides Google IS just disappointing. Haven't changed at all since Android started becoming mainstream.

                    id imagine the many millions of kodi/android tv boxes that have been sold are running android four, five and six which skews the figures a bit

                      Kyo, 11 Feb 2018Project treble is still not supported by anyone except Huaw... moreproject treble is a mandatory by every phone that released with oreo. this will of course slow down adaptation of oreo as oem will hesitant to make their products last longer than they expected. a good example is nokia 6 2018 which was released with nougat, but apparently has an oreo update in an instant after it's release. but of course, oem can also support project treble even though it's released with previous version of android.

                      huawei supports it. google pixel support it. sony support it. heck, even essential support it. and every flagship of 2018 will of course support it, as no oem will dare to release a phone with outdated version of android.

                        Project treble is still not supported by anyone except Huawei who doesn't have a good record with long term updates.Some Sony phones have released with it,but these phones are so insignificant that I don't even remember their names.
                        Google should slowdown the updates and bring more features and less bugs.More than anything Google should take control of the Android version updates from the OEM and separate the OEM and Android updates.

                          they shoud stop increase 1 number every year, only up the first number after 2/3 because from Nougat to Oreo i didnt see nothing special or nothing who deserve a number bump.

                          UI of toggles dont change since 5.1 i think, and features we really need didnt came after all.

                              Android 8 has been around months, still many phones in 2018 come with 7.0/7.1.
                              Google should forbid that.

                              If android is released in August, no phone released after december can have previous version.
