I used to change phones yearly. The price increases combined with smaller improvements made me sit on an almost 3 year old phone now, waiting for something worth upgrading to.

The polls options is irrelevant, 3 years and above is not "quite rarely". Some phone even survived until its 6th anniversary albeit battery problem. For sealed and non-replacable batteries' smartphones, it might be usable until its 4th anniversary.

2 years time for change is still acceptable but not perfectly because of user's phone has been obsolete. Its because of trend and marketing tricks and much-needed offers of a new phone bundles. Who doesn't want big value free gifts or bigger upgrade over 2 years old phone?

Therefore in reality, more than 2 years might be for the majority of users to change phone. Why? Most probably many people outside the US will wait for almost a year, right after a phone released with its mammoth price, to get a better deal of price cuts. Today the phone might be released with USD750, after almost 6-12 months, the phone price will be slashed gradually into around USD490 and making itself more affordable to the customers.

I boughy my first smartphone in 2013. Then in 2015 I got new one because I wanted a bigger screen.
I planned to upgrade only in 2017 but I had issues with the phone, so I had to get new one in 2016.

I want to buy a new one in december, but not sure I will have money enough, I am studying at the moment.

Well, since my Sony xperia can serve me for 3+ years easily then it is rarely often.

I just hope the I could upgrade to the S9 or iPhone X. Just hoping...

                    Every 2-3 years

I was using Oneplus X, just after buying X , I saw Zuk Z2 with SD820 for the same price with 4/64GB option. REGRET. I was looking for a phone with 'value for money' preference but not Xiaomi. That was so common in India, so I chose Oneplus. Now I am using Oneplus 3T. And almost happy with this.

It was every year for me, or even every few months with Samsung, but thank God I moved to stock android. Now one year with Pixel and don't even feel to upgrade as its so smooth still. Will look into Pixel 3. So two years it is now for me.

I change phone every 6-10 years... Or at least have been changing. Not sure if these new phones will last that long because there is not easy replace the battery option.

Currently on 3rd year with my s6. The 18:9 phones are very tempting though since I read a lot on my phone (websites, pdfs).
I'll wait until S10 is released for some 10th anniversary goodies if they do celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Galaxy S

After switching from S4 to S7, I realized that it was not worth it.
Now I am hardly abstaining myself from buying S9(which will be launched soon).
The reality is that phones are not laggy any more and the camera differences are not so huge, nor do you use it so often that it is worth throwing money at it.
Unless you use the phone's feature very often(it does not just sit on your desk at work and basically not being touched all day and you use the camera a few times when you go on vacation), you should consider investing those money in something else you might want.

For the first time ever, I'm seriously considering keeping hold of my S7 Edge for another year rather than upgrade this month after 2 years. It's still relevant, and the features introduced on devices since its release don't seem to be major steps, and it's still as fast as it ever was.

Can anyone here convince me to upgrade to the (likely costly) S9 or S9 +?

I change phones every five years. Of course if the phone gets slower and some defect started to appear in my phone than I will change earlier.
