My first one was the Xperia X10 Mini pro which I used as a feature phone, and it wasn‘t able to do any more because everything above TicTacToe and WhatsApp (which only my sister used with her‘s) crashed.
Then I switched to the iPhone 5, and the difference was night and day. I loved it for 3 years, but it became a bit boring so I bought an Xperia M4 Aqua.
That one was ok at first, but after half a year I was annoyed by the buggy software (if you come from an iPhone, everything that isn‘t a Nexus/Pixel is buggy), the overheating and bad performance of the lousy SD615, the cheap plastic built which scratched up even with a case, and the huuuge bezels which made this phone as big as a 5.5in phone, so I started to hate it.
But I had to wait another 3/4 year until I got my iPhone 5 back, which my relative I sold it to a 3/4 year before didn‘t want anymore because the new WhatsApp call feature didn‘t work anymore. I used that one for 2 months, and I loved it once again, and iOS 10 wasn‘t as boring anymore, even though it made the battery only last for 1 hour of usage.
After those 2 months, as planned, I switched to the iPhone 7 and kept the iPhone 5, and since then, I also loved my iPhone 5. I guess after those Xperiences („pun intended“) I‘m not able to live with an Android again, or at least not with one that‘s high end.

Great article , especially the nostalgia part , and embracing the geek within

          Cor,you came to "smartphones" late.
As for costs,if a lowly paid gardener with a young family can afford to buy into smartphones, almost anybody else should be able to,due to most folk earning lots more.
we got our first sony/ericsson p800's in 2002,then p900's,then p910i's.then htc tytn 2's,then the best device yet,the briliant htc hd2,everything since the hd2 has been a step backwards ine way or the other, except stereo front speakers, since then every device has had a problem, near perfect phones, but some un-rootable or rootable but with some other compromise,or,like the butterfly series.dont work properly in the uk/eu..
I will also jump ship for my next device,as i have no income at all now,it will be a second hand sammy note 4 or 5 if i can find a 5 cheap,or a full zte Axon 7,not the mini.
Keep having fun ivan,i always did ignore what folk said about me and my toys, but then i had the experience of having the hi-fi bug from a young age, just with the ability to buy cheaply some of the best equipment ever produced, folk thought i was mad then, but that kit is now worth silly figures,it h costs me a small fortune to insure it,but i could buy a very nice house or two if i sold it...

I'm a reader from Nokia N97,. I dono the year,. I have changed many phones,.. May Be 10 or 12 max,. Symbian os, Bada os, ios, android,.. Even Nokia N9 HMm..Mimo 9..or something I can't remember ,.. Even Sony's Symbian os,.. I tried,. With p900,.. Or p910,. With touch support,.. All I say To Ivan,. Technology is too fast now a days,.. With in 2 or 3 years,.. It's really speedy,.. So best of luck. I'm venkat 9944005604.

My 1st smart phone was a Nokia 6630, loved that phone, then I had the n80, HTC tytn 2, my 1st experience of Windows mobile 6.1/6.5 lol. Got myself a Sony Ericsson satio, loved the camera on that. Carried on with Sony and got their 1st android flagship, the X10, HTC sensation was my next, i was very close to getting the galaxy s2, got another sony after that, man I showed off my Xperia Z so much lol, dipping it in water and all sorts haha. Went back to HTC with M7, I loved the design but the camera was just so lacking. My 1st taste of an LG device was the g3, I loved this phone for a few things, it was a great multimedia device, the camera was fantastic, it was my 1st "big screen" phone.

So bet you'll never guess what i went for next lol, I got an iPhone 5s, I just wanted to see what it was like, and tbh, I had no major gripes about it, and end of the day it didn't last long with me, i hated having to use iTunes for everything and even though I jailbroke my phone, I just didn't have the level of control I wanted.

So cash was a little low and I got a great deal on an s3, the lte variant, my 1st Samsung device and it was really nice, touchwiz was new to me but I got used to it, I ran custom roms so had some of the newer versions of touchwiz out. I went with the s6 next, man what a gorgeous phone, the design was amazing and a far reflection of what I was used to from Samsung. Not having an sd card was something i was not used to but I got over it, still got that phone and even better news it's getting oreo.

So here I am now with my s8+, the best phone I've ever owned so far, I can't fault it tbh, great camera, great screen, I regularly get a day use out of it with 7h+ sot, yes I know Samsung can be a bit slow with updates but they have been getting better than they were.

Great article btw, I think the rest of the Gsmarena te a should do one

Well, I started as alcatel user - OT 311, it was gift and I didn't care much then, it had mono-c. screen with orange backlight, ok+up+down button and great games. Then I came to LG B2070, color screen and thin body(compared to alcatel) and really tough build, it works till today. The first phone that I bought was Sony Ericsson K530i, I did enjoy its sturdy design, wap, OS themes, and at that time awesome 2mp camera - with hw shutter button. Then it was age of ericsson awesome designs, and with its hw cam button, it was no brainer for me - Sony Ericsson W910i, slider with big screen and big keyboard, sliding was really addictive, many phones at that time had different and unique ways of transforming. Then came Samsung with its amoled breakthrough, I could see ads everywhere. Did wait though and bought Galaxy S, it was already modern smartphone with all sensors possible. Amoled screen with deep blacks was awesome, same battery life. 5mp was quite upgrade for me, same as 300€ price of an year old phone(quite pricy for feature phone users at that time), it was very popular with many variations, frequent android updates and many bugs. I did enjoy many apps, videos on its "big" screen, flac support, navi,... Then came dreamy device for 700€ - Note 3, with 13mp great to this day, same as sharp 4K, 5,7" screen and Pen to write down like shopping list, images or words, without need to think where are the keys for that word, as blessing for people educated with pen in stead of keyboard. I use this phone even today for language learning - like writing japanese and chinese characters.
Still I liked to shoot with camera and missed full manual control, thats why I bought and used them as 2nd device until last year. First was Lumia 520, it was cheap phone, but with awesome camera UI And full manual control, something some flagships(sony...) do not have until today. Again came to like hw cam. shutter as way to fast launch camera and take shot without worry if screen is visible in sun, or what kind of thick gloves I used. Lumia 1020 was next, simply to describe, it was slow camera, but detail-wise it was another world, 8K resolution whats there more to say. At that time I had enough od using 2 devices and stayed with Note 3 again, mainly for its pen. Well, as I did wait here in eu for 2y update to note5(not available regionally), note7(as changing from 6 didn't help its fate), couldn't wait anymore so bought another phone. As user of phone with different brand for hw and software I did want to try true one brand phone, but closed os of apple, mono recording and 12mp was too little for me as 13mp user and user of 38mp in past. I bought 950XL, shitty device apps concerning, but as camera awesome till today. Not counting HDR/stacking for better quality, ultra fast focus, true colors, its beast. Its postprocessing is another world be it stills or video. Even in low light it creates no noise that one can recognize as digital and unnatural. It also uses kind of saturation+gamma boost, so even in low light its colorful, so usable. Only U11+, partly xz1 came close. And main reason why I bought it? As it was for camera, not OS, I did like its sad fate of WM10, as its price went really down. Also mostly for its haac mics(145dB), unrivaled 3D rec.audio till today. Shame on you another brands for not being able to overcome that... Well havin same brand hw+sw even W10 OS is still great, as updated keeps rolling even now. Phones is fast, Better with every update, not worse. I also enjoy feedback hub, insider builds and so on. Dead WM mean a little to me as next device will come soon, and its mobile OS face will survive in some form. I only hope it comes as camera centric as Lumias before. Stacked sensor as that of sony would be probably too much, but I hope they will out something unique and flagship worthy. And again hopefully with a pen.

Where are the real champ of the beginning? The Windows mobile 2002 to version 6? The Symbian Palm. BlackBerry. Sony Symbian and Sonyericsson devils. The role of Taiwane firm hi-tech Qtek or HTC now. The first android G1 also came later in 2007.

Ivan, thank you for a nice relatable write up. Good read!

He should have bought Z3 instead of Nexus 5.
Good screen size, better built of 2014, waterproofing, stereo speakers, pretty design, huge battery for 2014.

Anonymous, 11 Feb 2018Stereo speakers, great camera, great battery life, fluid so... moreonly if you install a 3rd party launcher, as sony's is pretty crap, but that's an easy fix, but a bigger flaw sony has is their 2017 flagships don't like focusing below 30cm, as both my XZ premium and XZ1 suffer with that issue.

but performance and experience wise they on just below a pixel and tied with HTC.

How'd you find the Galaxy S7 Edge since you disliked the S6?

                                Ivan,
Looking at your article, i can relate to your passion and list of phones you've had.
I too started with the Nokia E51 but also had E66, N73, N80, N85. Symbian Sony, i had the W950i. Symbian Samsung Omnia HD and i8510. After this i dabbled with Windows the HTC HD2 before moving to Android. Started with Nexus One then got Nexus S and Motorola Atrix, since then i have never changed from Android. My list of Android devices is possibly excessively extensive, covering most Motorola, Samsung, Sony and Imports including Xiaomi, Elephone, Umi, Vernee etc..i struggle to recall them all. Currents are Huawei P10 Plus, Essential PH-1, Honor Magic, i am toying with the idea of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro but not sure i can live without 3.5mm jack or memory expansion.
I've lost more money than i care to think; painful but it's a passion.
