Qualcomm may follow up its 7nm modem with a 7nm chipset: the Snapdragon 855

The company did not say whether it's TSMC or Samsung that is fabbing the 7nm modems.

Heck, even SD 660 can easily beat SD 810. The SD 820 address this issue and rarely throttled, only when you use it for highly demanding task for a prolonged times. The subsequent SD 835 doesn't have this issue, but it's performance are still way ahead of it's predecessor.

Sure, Apple's custom CPU are improving over 30% each year, but it's only to appeal simple minded who doesn't understand much about SoC. Peak performance does't mean the same as sustained performance. Reaching score as high like that is easy, but it's unpractical for daily usage when scheduler starts to kick-in and throttle the CPU due to too much heat dissipated and too much power consumed after only less than a minute usage.

Fulljack, 17 Feb 2018you call over ~10% improvement as marginally better? do you... moreWell then 820 was miles better than 810 before it, while 845 looks to be substantial upgrade over 835 based on the info so far. Apple improves their CPUs by 30 and 40% every year. So evidence suggests 10% really is marginal in the mobile space.

I like Kirin so very much but Qualcomm is convincing me more and more each day. I would love a Huawei flagship phone using this snapdragon 855 with oled display. how great it would be.

                              Good news ^^

Anyway, s855 would be based on A75/A55 u arch too. IP cores' innovation aren't fast like semiconductors' . It took 5 years to update their A53.

10LPP is 40% more efficient over 14LPP while 7FF is said to be 60% more efficient over 16FF. And now remember 14LPP vs 16FF. Then you have the answer: 7FF isn't such a big update over 10LPP. However, GF's 7EUV is a real update. If s855's fab is GF's 7EUV, then it's worth skipping s845 and waiting for that SoC. Otherwise we should enjoy s845's new u arch.

Speed is nothing without power, any new tech from battery department? Say 5000mah full in 30m, single charge for 3days

Still does not help for Qualcomm make it competitive with exynos and Apple. Once dominant chip maker becomes joke object

AnonD-596087, 16 Feb 2018Lol, 835 destroyed 820? Do u even know what u r talking abt... morethe ipc uplift from 820 to 835 was low, around ~8% iirc, but qualcomm made up with higher clock speed, so it's a much faster cpu. their custom kryo cpu is good, but it also use a hell of a power, that's why qualcomm went to 2+2 cores route, unlike sd 835 4+4 cores which is basically made with arm cores who built their cpu with efficiency in mind.

thing is, it's soc, not just cpu. the cpu performance is fine, ever since the sd 820. now, the gpu departments need to be improved a lot, which qualcomm does, thanks to more open sourced api (vulkan) and the hardware that was built around it. that's why in overall scores where both cpu and gpu were used the sd 845 destroy the sd 835 just like how the latter destroy the sd 820

AnonD-646541, 15 Feb 2018snapdragon 835 don't have neural unit and here you can clea... morenot true. qualcomm has neural unit intgrated into the soc, which is the hexagon dsp 680 which is present at snapdragon 820. it's upgrade, the dsp 682 which is present at snapdragon 835 is not that powerful whe pitted against kirin's npu. now, the dsp 685 were supposed to uplift the performance by a much higher rate, so just wait for the benchmark
