OMGush, 17 Feb 2018The problem with the Nokia phones now made by HMD is that i... moreThey follow nothing, just use what Npkia innovated. HMD does not have enough power to invest in researches, they need more time, more money. A business does not grow in seconds, HMD needs time to open research labs again. And i am glad i can hold a Nokia quality device, even if their is nothing new. It is not like samesung has sonething better to proove. Cause they don't, actually none of them so called OEM's have something better to proove. A screen with holes in it ain't innovation. Since Nokia devices was sold, innovation was gone, and is still gone, even tough the so called Giants have a lot of money. Seems like they are not interested in researching, or they just wait for other to invent sonething they can copy and use as their innovations.

OMGush, 17 Feb 2018The problem with the Nokia phones now made by HMD is that i... moreYes thats the thing for me. I always liked Nokias cause they were different and you got durable phone that on that time was with good hardware for the price like Lumia 520

I still have that 520 and is my backup phone. Would love to have something that is same body size of 520 but bezel-less 720p 4.7"-5.2" screen with some 12mp with dual flash in the back only and no selfie cam. With something SD 2xx with 2GB ram and stock droid with a price of maximum 150 euro. It would sell like hot cakes but there isnt anything that small anymore and no brand want to have that special place.

And new Nokia android isnt that special for me anymore so i went with some random Chinese copy brand phone to test how long will it last for my daily driver. Nokia right now is just not interesting enough to buy it to be just a element a phone plate that survives and is boring.

FinnishInquisition, 17 Feb 2018Oh give it a rest already. The argument from the start was ... more"Oh give it a rest already. The argument from the start was that 16:9 is better for web browsing than 2:1. The example from the very start of this pointless conversation was that productivity and surf tablets have more squareish aspect ratios. You don't even know what moving the goalpost means. You asked for examples of smartphones using 3:2 aspect ratios thinking there were none, I gave you the best selling smartphones in the world, you moved the goalpost to suddenly just include the last year. You lost the argument and are grasping at straws."

No, you brought the 3:2. After that I asked why there aren't recent phones with that aspect ratio. Also you're the one moving goalposts. The original conversation started by you saying that there isn't even a single advantage over 16:9 and I proved you wrong by giving multiple examples. Now you're just sticking to that one web page argument. Even bringing things that weren't part of the original conversation and accusing me of doing that.

"You don't need any bezels just because your device has a 16:9 screen. Stop being asinine. Bezelless devices can come with any aspect ratio."

Yeah why wouldn't it be possible to that? You don't have to make these useless and really obvious points. You just can't stand the fact that someone prefers 18:9 rather than 16:9.

"And no, S7 Edge is the predecessor of the S8. They both implement a curved edge design, hence why the screen is bigger on paper. It's wrapping around the front. I'm getting sick of these pointless arguments with someone who can't stand being proven wrong."

Oh the same thing that bothers me about YOU.

"I'm done wasting time and energy on you."

Great, finally a valid point. I'll continue to have fun with my 18:9 screen, you can stick to those inferior 16:9 screens. Oh I almost forgot, Netflix for example, is producing lots of its content in 18:9 aspect ratio. Useless? Not at all.

Nokia, 17 Feb 2018"A phone has a limited battery life. Having an even bigger ... moreOh give it a rest already. And you must understand there's a difference between having a screen where the visible area better matches your field of vision than having a screen wherehalf of it is in your periphery. You dfon't use that part of your vision. Web pages aren't designed with 2:1 (or even 16:9) in mind. Just give it a rest.

I'm done wasting time and energy on you.

FinnishInquisition, 16 Feb 2018A phone has a limited battery life. Having an even bigger s... more"A phone has a limited battery life. Having an even bigger section of the screen that goes unused is wasteful. It doesn't matter if you can "move your eyes".

Oh great. Let's make phones with less than 1 inch screen and super big bezels. Then you won't waste any of the space and can have gigantic battery. Although the user experience can suffer a bit because of the huge bezels but whatever.

"Also the S7 Edge, which the S8 was a continuation of in terms of design language, was 5.5". That being said, you're literally shooting yourself in the foot here. First you claim that it has everything with aspect ratio to do, then you say it's size that matters. You can't have the cake and eat it."

No. Both matter. Try to imagine that 500:1 screen. No matter how short or long it's sides are, it's no use at all. And S7 was more like S8+, Samsung had devices for ones who need smaller and ones who need a bigger one.

"As for the reason why 1:1 videos aren't a thing, it's because TV and movies are intended to be immersive. You need the periphery for that. You don't need any periphery when browsing the web."

It depends on the content you search for. Images, for example, are one other medium where you really don't need that 1:1 aspect ratio while benefitting from longer screen.

"I also think you'll find that most people hold their phones in a vertical orientation when browsing the web. That's another reason the ridiculously elongated screens are even more of a waste. Most of the world reads left to right, not top to bottom. So you're lighting up a big part of the screen you're not even using."

Left to right, then top to bottom. There's a reason why texts aren't only super long one line. 1:1 would also have wasted space unless your device would show only few words at the moment and every other part of the screen would've been turned off.

"Oh and stop moving the goalpost. First you didn't think there were any 3:2 smartphones, and when proven wrong they suddenly have to be smartphones from the last year? Give me a break. You were wrong. Deal with it."

If someone is moving the goalpost it is definitely you. We were talking about 18:9 vs 16:9, and you brought 4:3, 3:2 and 1:1, which none of have anything to do with the original conversation. I also assumed you would understand that I obviously meant modern devices, but clearly one can't make an assumption like that. If there were a market for phones with 3:2 screens you'd think someone would manufacture them.

Well if it's Android One then it must not have the usual Nokia's blue UI then.

The problem with the Nokia phones now made by HMD is that it's lacking new features and hardware or software innovation from the old Nokia.
Even the Lumia's introduced a lot of features that weren't present in android phones back then like OIS, wireless charging, 41Mpx camera 1020, super sensitive touch, always on display, NFC etc.
Sadly, this Nokia-HMD are just following the trend of new specs/design of today's market leaders.
Well atleast their phones are still durable tho.

                        Phone looks gorgeous. *-*
Hopefully the pricing will be alright and this will definitely sell like hotcakes.

18:9 is slim more compact for a large screen, good for split screen viewing.

Aren't ypu guys bored with phones nowadays?? They're all the same.. I have an S7 edge, why should I buy the S8 or S9, or any other rectangle? So boring.. Even iphone X is a snoozer.. who cares if the processor is a little better and the camera has better aperture or the screen brightness is improved over the last generation.. S7 (and the phones from 2016) are still good workhorses that do everything new phones do.. I wont shell out €900 for a S9 because Samsung "reimagined the camera" whatever that means.. I want a revolution like foldable display or hologram or something that warrants the price they charge.. Otherwise I will keep my money and EAT FOR 6 MONTHS INSTEAD
